An amature electronic musician making random bleepy bloops and techno and house and dance music and stuff. Sometimes it comes together to make a coherent song, sometimes it's just silly faffing about. But maybe there's something enjoyable to be found... maybe... Well it's been a while but I broke out my Roland MC-303 on a whim this morning. Had doubts about how much I wanted to keep it due to like... never using it. But after reacquainting myself with the machine and making some simple 90's house, yeah I'm keeping it. She's a fun box. ^w^
Sooo that recording music and uploading on a consistent basis thing? Yeah never heard of it. It’s been a long while but finally, FINALLY I got around to recording and uploading some muzak. FUCKING FINALLY.
But yes! Over the weekend I got yet another random piece of muzak equipment (shock horror, I know). This time it was a Twisted-Electrons Acid8, which is a really rad TB-303 style synth that is basically an 8-bit chiptune-ey synth with a 303-style interface. It’s pretty fucking radical. So what does a silly husky like myself do? Simple, pair it with my Volca Sample and make silly techno/electro nonsense of course! Go me.
As always, Soundcloud and Youtube and whatnot links will be in a separate post coming soon.
also you can probably guess where I got the name and the sample from in this. At least where the sample came from before I horrifically grinded it through a vocoder, heh
... also as a bonus, here's me sequencing the opening bassline from Blue Monday with the QX21. Because I'm, like, legally required to sequence either New Order's "Blue Monday" or Nitzer Ebb's "Murderous" whenever I get a new sequencer.
I swear I need to stop acquiring random gear, but today isn't the day I shall do that. For I have yet another silly piece of vintage equipment in my collection! This time a Yamaha QX21 MIDI sequencer. This thing is a pretty early and basic MIDI sequencer from 1985. As in... well, SUPER basic. It only has two tracks and can only record to one of those tracks (you kinda use track 1 as your recording track and then mix stuff down into track 2 to create a song or pattern), plus you can only have one "sequence" per say saved on the unit. If you want to keep your work, you have to either save it as a SYSEX dump via MIDI or save to a cassete via an MSX-style 8-pin DIN-to-audio cable. Sooo yeaaahhh, not that useful in our modern age.
STILL, it's pretty fun to mess with honestly. Quite clunky to say the least, but fun for a silly hipster like me who loves finding obscure and cheap vintage music equipment. And it goes nicely with my vintage Casio CZ-1000 too, as demonstrated here!
For people who might not know - Wendy Carlos is a trans woman who was deeply influential in early electronic music and hugely involved with the push to have synthesizers seen as real instruments.
Welp, once again I've blown a couple of hundred dollars on a new synth. This time a Korg Monologue! Which is friggin' radical might I add. Just sayin'.
… seriously, bloody hell. You guys are going to make me broke this year, what with the 808-clone and the SH-101 clone and the Pro-One clone. Seriously I haven’t been this excited for a set of new electronic music gear since Korg’s Volca FM.
So I decided to muck around with my CZ-1000 for a little bit and while fiddling around with one of the presets and modifying it I discovered I had made random 80′s-ish soundtrack music. So I recorded a little. For funsies!
Sooo seeing as I simultaneously discovered not only the existence of the Roland PMA-5 recently but ALSO that a local Music Go Round had one in their store, I decided to pick it up and give it a go! Spoilers: it’s actually really neat and kinda weirdly anachronistic for its time.
... woah boy howdy has it been a while since I actually like... recorded and uploaded something properly? Fuck, you know that “being consistent” thing? How you’re not supposed to do stuff like this seemingly at random? Yeeahh I’ve never heard of it either.
Anywho, I decided to drag out my Volca FM and trusty Volca Bass and combine them with my Korg DDM-110 Super Drums for some very basic/minimal synthwave-ey shite. This marks the first time I’ve shown off the DDM-110 in a proper recording too, even though it’s barely really used here heh. Oh well.
As always, the full recording and links and whatnot will be in a separate post.
