In recent years due to the rise of Bridgerton, the concept of a debutant has piqued a lot of your interests. I've been answering a lot of questions about debuts so I've decided to compile everything into one guide for you all (y'all deserve a guide because I've not made many in ages cause I've been absolutely swamped. I'm going to try do more).
What exactly is a debut?
A debut is the entrance of a member of the nobility, the gentry or the wealthy into the society of the day. They are being formally introduced to their peers and their future social groups. This milestone marks them coming of age and being able to finally take part in society as adults. Both boys and girls make their debut in society. But we will be focusing on the girls for today.
How to Debut in Polite Society
Like many traditions, there are strict guidelines one must follow. Most debutants are at least 16, ranging to 16-20. They must be a member of nobility, gentry or a part of an influential family in order to participate.
In European tradition, the debutant is introduced to the Royal family by a female relative, who has already been presented at court. They are formally introduced to the court and society, making their bows or curtsys. Once this ritual has been observed, every debutant will hold a ball at their own home to celebrate their coming out. Every debutant will host a ball and attend other debutants' balls over the weeks of the Season. They would also attend different events throughout the Season in order to meet their peers and make connections. The tradition of the debutant ball has become a rarity in recent years though some still practise it.
In 19th Century America, one debut's by holding a ball to mark one's entrance into society. Peers, influential figures and other affluential people would be invited to witness the debutant make their entrance. In more recent years, a debut is made through International Debutante Ball. A debutante must be recommended by an established member of society or a member of the committee (usually a female relative) similar to the European tradition. However, in American tradition the debutants are escorted by her father rather than a female relative and once she's presented, she is escorted by a younger male escort. The American debutant does not get away without her curtsy however, she must perform the gesture known as the St. James Bow to attendees or in Southern tradition, the "Texas Dip".
What to wear to a Debut
Everything, even down to what you're wearing, is set out in tradition. When debuting at a European Court, the traditional choice is a white court dress (though soft pinks and shades of white are permitted). The dress was short sleeved and had to have a train. The debutante wore long white gloves, a veil in her hair with three white ostrich feathers and jewels. Before the debutant has been introduced, she would hold her train over her arm and then let it fall when she has been presented. American debutants have a more complex colour scheme since they can participate in the ball for up to three years first time debutants wear wear white, post-debutantes black and on the third year they wear red.
I also really recommend watching Downton Abbey 4x09 because of how accurately it depicts the debutante's journey from before ceremony, the actual ceremony and post-ceremony.
You meet these two weird dudes on your journey across cities you grandparents loved.
wc: 2.3k
this is crazily self-indulgent, so...
Also wasn't edited to perfection, was tired a sitting on it and contemplating... beware.
The town you made it to was small, compared to the major cities you also visited, quaint, almost friendly. It was a more of a city, but with the lack of people, one your grandparents spoke so highly of. Of it being the spot that people from all over wanted to stop through, somewhere everyone wanted to be.
From what you could see though was somewhere run down. Buildings all around taken over by weed and animals, fall apart. The town look like with a strong gust of wind, maybe even a hurricane would take it out. It was sad really, cause you came here hoping to see what your grandparents saw; lived. The tales of how incrediable bright the city used to be lit with people the hustle and bustle never stopped. There was always somebody in every place. Even during the off months of the students at the University. How even at night, it never seased.
There were so many places that seemed to have been abandoned, fill with merchandise but with no one to buy.
Though the people weren't exactly friendly, how could they be. House after house burned or unable to be fixed and updated to current standers. People losing family homes, homes that had been with them for decades. Just tired face after tired face, nowhere for children to even play outside. Even the friendly people were confused as to why you came, advised you to turn around and leave; find somewhere better to be. Spilling every not so secret of the city. Like how just the other day somebody open fired at a family reunion in a park. Or how some people just go hired in the big box store just to steal.
Even the schools weren't safe, kids constantly fighting, with that parents encouraging it, can't hang after the football games in fear of a shooting happening.
All of it was spooky.
Maybe it was the lack of food was fucking with your perception of things. After walking so long you stopped at this very stereotypical looking diner the checkered floors the blood red seats, probably made of vinyl the sticky kind that if seated too long, it's stuck to the skin. It didn't make any sense for everything that you'd seen and heard, but it's whatever when you wanted nothing more than to just fill your stomach and go rest.
Seated in a booth right by the big window, getting something simple, wings and fries, with a little extra to take with you. Observing your surroundings, you notice two cooks behind the counter, a couple in the far back, some truckers at the bar. The diner itself was squeaky, clean for the lack of workers. Nothing Appeared out of place.
Then you heard it before you saw it, it was a nice sleek car that pulled into the diner. You can see the neon lights from the sign outside reflect off the car from how shiny and reflective it was.
What really took your breath away was the man that stepped outside of the car. Especially with the way that one of them was dressed, leather jacket on top of flannels, it had a very nice patina on it, with sturdy jeans. Even from where you were sitting, you could see he was a very beautiful man with spiky hair tapered on the sides in the air of confidence surrounding him.
Not long after another even taller man wearing something similar, except with The other even taller wearing something similar, except with A heavy duty work jacket. However, with how young he looked, accompanied with the shaggy boy cut, you wondered what he actually did for work.
You really couldn't take your eyes off of them. They stood out in this cookie cutter town. They were like an obvious stain on a pair of new shoes. Something so out of place, Yet so intriguing, you couldn't look away.
After they passed you, Probably to sit in the very back, you noticed your food was sitting right in front of you. Shocked you quickly glance around to see if there was another server you Missed.
Simply shrugging it off, you begin to really eat the bus ride in the long walk around exploring really Did a number on your appetite. Probably won't need to have leftovers to take with you.
Fidgeting with your necklace, you couldn't help but feel a little sad. Depressing what it was that you never get to experience this with Your granddad. He was The most prominent father figure you had in your life. His favorite thing being going out to diners with you.
"Hey" tapping the cream top table, "could I sit and talk with you a moment." the soft drawl and drag of shaggy boy words was quite handsome.
Slowly, your eyes left the window Raking over his body before landing on his eyes. Now, That you see him up close his eyes being hazel is very fitting. You peered to the left then right, before nodding.
"What're you the feds," resting your chin on your right hand. It was the first thing you had to ask. Out of all people one of them wanted to talk to you. Laughable, theres on only one of two reason he was here to speak.
Looking puzzled, " yeah, how did you know?"
"Oh I can tell, y'all make it so obvious."
He looked even more puzzled, his eye scanning your face as if he was serching for somwething. You only countined to smile softly at him.
"I could tell you," shurgging a little, "but then that would be talkin to the feds," pausing for a liitle more dramatic effect while rolling your eyes, " and that's something that I don't do."
"You're talkling to me right now." The corner of his mouth quirk up.
"but I ain't tellin you nuthing," you said slyly, staring him down.
he snorted, looking away, while sucking his teeth, "we just want to know if you can help us…"
"Why would I help yall?" You snickered.
"Becasue there's be strange thing happen around here." A very serious evpression washed over his face.
Taken aback you questioned, "so you ask the only black person you come across because…" A grimeance appearing on your face.
" Oh," he seemed perplexed, before a look of regret overtook his face, " so, its definitely because I'm black, I know where this is going."
Not surprised or shocked at all
"No-"
Shaking your head you really could believe that this was happening to you. SO far your journey had bee peaceful.
"Really what is it with you cops these days why can't you be more subtle with your-"
"No," he insisted more intensly this time, "that's definably not why I, we, wanted to talk to you. Its just questions, we were already investigating a a string of crimes in the area happening to people that just pass through here. We want to know if you had seen anything."
You looked at him, examining his expression. Eyebrows knitted together with a terribly sad look in his hazel eyes. you don't know why you felt the need to trust him. It went against your better judgment and everything your mother taught you.
Shit. If ma saw me now she'd call me everything but a child of god.
You agreed to talk, requesting to finish your food first. watching him as he got back up and went to who you can only assume is his partner, whispering something to him before they left the building.
You made it a point to finish and pay as slow as possible. Dragging out the invitible of meeting them. Losing the security of a room full of people.
In all their glory they leaned on the side of the car, in a deep conversation.
'Real nice car, don't look like a undercover cop car tho,'
As if sensing your presence, Their heads immediately snapped to you ending whatever conversation they were having. The intensity of the lingering and combination with the Tense air made the hairs on your body stand, your bones just felt heavier. You try to scan your surroundings without looking suspicious, knowing the tears were welling up in your eyes, Trying to blink them away. Whatever spell they put on you in a matter of seconds, faded.
'Oh God I'm going to die for being a dumb-ass'
"Hey, it's alright-"
You couldn't say anything, throat closing so tight. Each breath felt like a drag a razors scratching your throat. Exhaling hurt worse cause it didn't want to leave, it had no where to go. Clawing at your chest, it was so strain. Everything was so hollow yet so full.
You tried to calm yourself but thinking of your family and friends. Yet the only things that made it way was how moronic this entire situation was. Here in a relatively unknown town, with two strangers, who could very well kill you. You promised that you would be safe before you left, making sure to avoid cities and town that would hate the look of you. Ensured your mother that you wouldn't just leave with any person that your family didn't know.
Just to go with the feds, two people who could very well be lying, to a hotel room. It sound so dumb to believe, theses people.
You dont know when you were moved, but you could hear the steady rhythm of a heart beat. Slow, melodic you could feel your breathing start to match. It take a couple of minutes but, after you feel calmer. You could see better, realizing you were in the back of a car. More importantly their car.
'He kinda smell like granddad,'
The vibration knocked you out whatever daze you were in, "I hope that's a compliment," the man was laughing at you.
You didn't mean to say that out loud!
"Nah," sniffling, "he was a drunkard, smartass." laughing at yourself.
Taking the step back. You really gotta look at Him. He was so much prettier up close.
Shaking your head to clear your thoughts so you could focus. They seem to have no issue with showing you their badges after you act. It didn't make you feel any less stupid but at least you knew they were the real deal.
What the three of y'all didn't see was all the eyes around staring right at you. Nor did you see the concerning gaze Sam threw Dean's way.
The car ride was silent after what happened back at the diner. Because truly you were out of your depth. Riding with strangers, especially men, off in city with no family close, with nothing but your switch blade and a vision. It was foolish, you know, to agree to meet these men somewhere that was not public. But something about them made your head spin, loosing sense of reality. Before you knew it you were agreeing.
The inside of the car was a mix of beige and black. Classic for a classic car, which you leared was a 1967 Impala named Baby. It was also passed down from their father when they offially enter the force.
Frankly, Nothing about the men was explicitly government or at the very least police. You didn't really think to closely examine the badges they flashed, but Wasn't like you Knew what you were looking for. Considering though, they give rigid military innocence. Like Maybe they were sent to military school. Not that any of the matters really because you were still in the car.
Though the silence persisted the little information they did give you was alarming. They were investigating a string of seemingly connected, disappearances, and or murders, in this very city. they hadn't seen very many tourist until they came across you. Which seem to explain why they were so eager to get you to come with them.
Clutching your necklace as the thought hurt you, you couldn't help but to stare at Dean. Closely examining him. admiring the way, his eyelashes fluttered as he blinked, The smirk that seemed edged on his face, And air of confidence that constantly surrounded him. He seemed like a man that knew what he wanted, when he wanted it, and how he wanted it.
Shaking your head to clear your thoughts, you turn your attention back to Sam, who was staring right at you. It was as if he was trying to study you.
Clearing your throat, " so what umm… kind of music yall listen to cause it being quite is making my nerves itch"
"Umm… normaly it's what ever Dean wants."
Sam was still taking quick glances at you then at Dean. You didn't know for what, honestly, you didn't want to find out.
"Yeah cause drivers rules and passagers shut his cake hole." Dean provided.
"That's nice in all but what kind of music?" You really wanted to know, sitting in silence will probly send you into another panic attack or asthma attack, which ever it was.
"Rock." It kind of made sense with the way that they were dress, like the dark colors and boots. You really didn't know much about rock, if you liked a song then you liked it, always just going with the vibe of shuffle.
Nodding, you start to rummage through your backpack. Just trying to distract youself, while looking for you earphones.
"What?" Dean's guff voice brought you back to reality of the conversation.
Shaking your head, " nuthin." Deciding in that moment to turn to face Sam. Who then turns to away from you.
Bastard.
"It's not 'nuthin', You got something to say about my music." He sounded so offended, it confused you cause you didn't even say anything. You saw his eyes cut to you in the rear-view mirror. His eyebrow raised on one side, you couldn't tell if he was confused or challengeing you.
"Nah," you look away shrugging. Giving up on making sense of any of it, and on your earphones. Choosing to instead make shapes out of the trees as they pass.
I am getting a sew-in for the first time. I played it safe for the time being. I know next time I want to go with a coily hair like Megan Thee Stallion
I have so many things that I want to do but I don't know what I want to do first. Like I want my nails done, but I am putting them off (I prefer to do my own) for other projects that I also want to do. With me being a full-time college student and working full time, I feel like I don't have time for anything.
