My issue with Severus portrayed by Rickman is basically that he plays him in a very repressed way overall. Which isn’t that strange, since Rickman was about 20 years older than book Snape when he started playing him and a 50-year-old man is not the same as a 30-year-old, because at 30 you’re still a bit of an adolescent in some ways. But beyond that, the Snape in the books is basically like a wet, rabid stray cat, whereas Rickman’s version is more ethereal, almost chivalrous, very Byronic, much more restrained and self-controlled, with basically none of his working-class roots showing, which you can clearly see in book Snape.

And it really pisses me off when people say we only like Severus because of Rickman, because even though Rickman is a top-tier actor, book Snape is everything to me. He embodies not just the dichotomy between the Muggle and magical worlds, but also his drive for social mobility versus his roots in a shitty neighborhood, and how he performs that higher education and his association with upper-class people contrasted with his lower moments, where you can see where he comes from. That nuance just doesn’t come through in the films, which I think is a shame and it’s even worse that some people genuinely believe core fans prefer the performance over the actual character.
