Here at Nearly Normal we pride ourselves on having assembled a truly multinational team that each brings a different cultural perspective to our collaborations. We embrace these differences because we believe they make us better as a collective. What brings us together is our love for paper craft and design.

For this Valentine’s Day we’ve chosen to use our individual skills and expertise to create a tribute to LOVE. This is our collaborative poster – It’s design is inspired by the coming together of each of our individualities, glued with paper and passion.

Inspired by the famous lines from The Beatles song, we created a poster illustrating what we feel is our primary need. It’s all about things that drive us to feel, to experience, to be intertwined and involved.

This year we want you to feel our love! So by giving you a poster we are giving you a piece of us, a slice of our handcrafted hard work, translated in colours, textures and paper craft because…

All we need is Love, Love is all we need.

The West India Dock Road Project

As part of The West India Dock Project for the Museum of London Docklands  we had the pleasure to produce an 8 minutes animation based around the history of West India Dock Road.

A collaboration between Pencil & Help, Clayton Junior, Nearly Normal Collective, Screen Deep, elders from the Hind Grove Community Hall and young east Londoners.

Somewhere between - Independent short film

We are working on our new independent short film! It's all paper of course, but this time we are using hand painted watercolours to do the job. A single panorama of ten different landscapes across one day... We're hoping "Somewhere between" will feel like a dreamlike journey through nature, with foxes and lions and birds. We built a wave machine and just finished shooting the sets, enjoy the sneak pics!

Ted Baker - Take on Ted

We had the great pleasure of working with Guided Collective on “Take on Ted”, directing the video production for streaming, working on the set design and doing the tittle bumpers. It was an event that allowed fashion bloggers from the US to control Ted Baker’s photographic studio at its London HQ. In a nutshell, the bloggers became the puppet masters of a live shoot, controlling everything from the models, makeup, hair to clothing choice. They had 15mins to create a look and thereby throw down the style gauntlet. The catch? They could only use Twitter and a live video stream to call the shots, but could also call on their followers for tips.

Ted Baker - Ted's drawing room

Celebrating the in-store launch of Ted Baker’s SS12 campaign, "The Great Exhibitionist and his Private Views", on Saturday 17th March 2012, Ted collaborated with a host of acclaimed illustrators to create a bespoke fashion portrait service called "Ted’s Drawing Room".

  Working along with Guided Collective, Nearly Normal  filmed the participating customers creating looks from the collection that were uploaded to instagram. In the studio, the illustrators were invited to ‘choose their muse’ and re-create their favoured photos from the hundreds of instagram photos submitted. The 11 illustrators ranged from pure fashion illustration to watercolour portraiture, to contemporary graphic art and were seen employing a broad diversity of techniques and styles throughout the day.

  We also filmed and broadcasted live for 8 hours via Livestream back into participating stores and to Ted’s Facebook page from the studio, enabling the public to watch the masters at work and the subjects of the portraits to tune in and watch their portrait being created!  Over 2000 viewers tuned in across the day, spending on average 26 minutes each glued to their screens. The stream was viewed in over 23 countries, ranging from the UK and USA to slightly further afield such as Japan, Malaysia and Taiwan.

  The studio, open from midday to 8pm GMT, also hosted an artwork and framing service with the 111 portraits created uploaded to Facebook on the day and the original, signed portraits framed and sent to their subject in the post soon after.

The wolf I used to be

After almost 6 months busting our arses, it’s finally done! And here’s the story behind it:

  It all started with Saulo Jamariqueli – Nearly Normal founder – writing a short narrative about a wolf’s life change. Everyone has their own interpretation about what The Wolf means to them. It can be seen as a reflection on modern life. The grass always seems greener in the other side, but as is often the case in real life, it isn’t.

  Jaime Kiss – Nearly Normal founder – introduced us to Cintia Bertaccini – paper engineer – and we loved her and her portfolio!  She was actually the catalyst for the project…

  From the beginning we wanted to do a collaborative project where everyone could participate and contribute with ideas and time along the way. Nearly Normal was producing, but we didn’t want to have a director on this project.

  At first it was a bit mad because everyone had different ideas about which direction it should go. However the most important and most used phrase on set was “Let’s Try”. So while Cintia was developing the characters based on Clayton Junior’s storyboard design, the rest of the team got together doing the all the other bits and pieces for the sets.

  It was an experiment that took on a life of its own. Some artists were involved throughout while others would come in sporadically, and some contributed just for a few days.  We wanted a full “hands on” experience, and to make nearly everything on the set, leaving almost nothing to do in postproduction. Even the soundtrack was composed entirely at Nearly Normal Studio, arranged by Luca Samuri and played by himself, Derik Yau and Saulo Jamariqueli. All the editing and Post Production was also done at the Nearly Normal Studios.

  We feel that this project really illustrates the organic approach that  is unique to Nearly Normal, where we always seek to maximise people’s abilities, giving them the freedom they need to work. As you can see, results are magical!

Yunus & Eliza - Making of

We followed our friends Yunus & Eliza while they were making a magnificent headpiece for “Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs" (Universal Records), sponsored by Swarovski Elements.

 The Making Of film was shown at London Fashion Week 2011, Somerset House.

We directed this surreal ad for the Doritos competition. We produced all the costumes and props in house. "A bag of simple pleasures" introduces the fascinating life of Arthur Bruce, who enjoys stroking his cat and eating delicious Doritos.

Short film, with a nice end twist, by Saulo Jamariqueli and Craig Kind, produced by Kelly Fysh. The piece was created and produced over a fun weekend and marked the beginning of an era for Nearly Normal of producing independent work. The short was selected by Straigth 8 and shown during the Cannes Advertising Week in 2009.
