fandom racism is so much harder to swallow when you're interacting with media that goes out of its way to feature characters of colour and they still get sidelined and erased

like when something revolves around predominantly white characters, you can almost like reassure yourself that the only reason the fandom is racist is because the source material doesn't give them much to work with

but when you're in a fandom that DOES have characters of colour and white people just blatantly erase them it fucking sucks so bad lol like nothing matters no matter how much progress is made, at the end of the day people see you as forgettable if you're not white

like ok sorry again to be talking about dbh on main in 2021 but like there's something incredibly depressing about the fandom of a game that is explicitly (to the point where it's often hamfisted and kind of cringey) about rising up against oppression, and that heavily features characters of colour, including 1/3 main characters, deciding their top three pairings are all white m/m pairings, including the second most popular pairing literally being a character that a) has no canonical personality or dialogue b) appears for 30 seconds at the end of like... one variation of a playthrough, and pairing him up with a cop that is also pretty insignificant in the broader game universe and who explicitly hates his kind. like yes we're going to put energy into developing this but completely ignore one of the actual lead characters who has infinite shipping potential and really interesting dynamics to explore with the characters around him but oh whoops! he happens to be black </3 but if anyone calls us out we're just gonna say his characterization isn't nuanced enough, like white robot with no personality or dialogue is somehow developed character.

and then like if we're gonna be #fandomprogressive and include a f/f ship, we're ALSO going to sideline another pretty important black character by erasing his existence so we can hook up the white character he bonds with over the course of the story with a different character who she's never met before, because again what the fuck is intersectionality, we have white lesbians so we've hit peak woke, even though if you really want a f/f ship, there are lots of other options that don't involve literally erasing a black character from his very important place in the narrative

You know everytime someone tries to bring the racial topic up, they’ll be labeled as overreacting or “typical tumblr behavior”. I don’t know about other fandoms but for the DBH fandom, people aren’t overreacting, it’s really what happening.

No it doesn’t mean if you like a white m/m pairing or white character, you’re a bad person or a racist. It’s just on a macro level, generally, this fandom do have a preference for white characters and pairings. It speaks many thing about a fandom. I’m in the fandom and I don’t even try to deny it.

Even QD themselves treat Markus like shit.

And as one of the few PoC that hang on by a thread for the reason of everything that has been mentioned beforehand, it's also telling how in all the times the game was played by one of the actors, this behavior was glossed over to the point that their little following was almost cult like.

When the blackout happened for BLM, a few words were said in support but you could see a lull in the traffic that normally was chatty Cathy's in that particular group, even when the blackout was over. It showed how much that little group didn't care for anyone else other than one of the main characters or any other white character. Even Markus is treated as a side character and that's...its very telling.

It's been also dismissed away several times with "well, so and so has taken out the time to do a let's play on the game."

To be quite honest, if I were Jesse, I wouldn't want to play it at this point either. What's the point? The disrespect is so high. I have heard everything from his acting was the weakest to literally seeing someone ripping him off the cover of the game when those other covers were available for a time. That chick could not rip him off fast enough to put Connor on.

I get she's an outlier, exception but when you, another black gamer see something like that on top of the obvious bias for an all-white cast and pairings when is fucking placed in Detroit, I don't know what to say that would drive home how this is hurtful, disgusting, abd dismissive.

D: BH was one of the few games that had a lot of PoC. While they weren't all playable they were there and all could have a opportunity for a decent backstory.

For some reason, the fandom chose to put into the obvious antagonist. Why though?

You'd put into a bigoted, antagonistic character that is canonical so but Leo Manfred is above a redemption? North is too hostile and angry to be with anyone but there are whole stories right now in A03 dedicated to violence with the Reed900 ship...

Please make it make sense.

Also, erasing Josh because he is a dark skin tone is abhorrent. North is revolutionary, Josh is pacifist, and Simon is neutral. He was never the pacifist. They all have a role.

It is late and I'm starting to ramble. My point is that erasure is real, remains so with the obvious no Markus merchandise.

It speaks volumes to the POC audience.

I'm not exactly a dbh veteran, but even if you've been in robot hell for two years or two days, you can tell how much the fandom loves misogyny and racism.

the fandom will defend any white male character to absolute insanity and either sideline or hate on any woman or poc character that comes within a 5 mile radius.

'it's kara's fault that her storyline is boring'

'it's north's fault that she's so violent and horrible'

'it's alice's fault she was so whiny and was abused'

'it's markus's fault he's bland has no personality'

except it changes for any white male that comes into the equation.

'it's [insert literally anyone]'s fault that machine connor is so mean'

not to mention the blatant favoritism, guys.

if markus looked like connor, you guys would be SCREAMING about how badass and amazing your revolution bean is.

the dbh fandom loves fetishism, and you cannot argue against that. i can go on about how people defend violent racists, child-killing psychopaths and bland characters with no personality because go white boy go!! i don't care what your reasoning is, you can't pick and choose who the writers wrote terribly or not. josh and north actually have personality, but go ahead and praise your gay white boy instead. oh, and go ahead and enjoy your clearly abusive and toxic reed900 dynamics while you're at it.

i hate to get aggressive, because usually i don't mind what people enjoy. it's nmy fault I'm so narrow-minded after all, lmao. but you seriously can't dispute the clear bias for whiteboys in the fandom. I've seen people abandon and kill north without hesitation because she isn't the soft uwu girl women are portrayed as in media, ESPECIALLY survivors. i've seen people purposely kill markus any chance they got because he's boring. i've seen people claim alice dying a brutal death at todd's house is the best ending for kara. kinda like how ive seen people laugh at a mother and her child getting killed in a collision on a highway. this is the kind of shit that makes me want to delete tumblr and leave the fandom jesus fucking christ.
