💋 for Marni and the Caseys. <3 - @emilesmuseassembly
They were finally doing it. They were finally leaving Bright Falls. Sure, it was only for a day, but it was an adventure all their own. Maps and museum brochures lined her jacket pockets. They had planned every detail meticulously.
She looked to Alex as the Bright Falls dock retreated from view. His jaw was set tight. He was nervous. She probably should have been nervous as well, but with him, everything felt like it'd be alright. It always had.
She tugged his sleeve, and when he faced her she did something she should have done a long time ago. The ferry horn blared as she kissed him.
The worst part of every loop wasn't the gunfire. It wasn't even the blood. It was the way that Casey looked when he was lying there. Tired. Lost. Alone.
And then she'd kneel at his side and try to comfort him. Somehow, that only made it worse. He'd try to comfort her instead. He'd try to choke out apologies and consolations while blood bubbled from his mouth.
So she did the only thing that would comfort them both. She held him close, cradling his torso tight against her. She kissed him, no matter how much blood he had spit up. And if he refused to let her kiss him on the mouth, she pressed her lips to his brow.
No matter where the kiss landed, she kept it there until he was gone. Every loop was punctuated by a death. It didn't mean he had to suffer.
Casey would be leaving in a few days. It didn't make the mornings with him any less sweet. She knew he wasn't sleeping well, but he stayed in bed through the night. For her.
He kissed her head as warm sunlight pushed through the windows. A gentle reminder that, eventually, he had to get up. He had work to do. It was the entire reason he was here.
She grumbled and rolled onto him, as if her weight could absolve him of responsibility. He huffed out a tired chuckle. She tucked her face into the curve of his neck. Every lazy kiss to his jawline was a plea for him to just stay in bed with her. She knew he'd deny it, but she had to try all the same.
