I promise I started on this yesterday but finished today, so that counts as me being on time. Here’s an even witch speaking in tongues and casting a spell. She has no name but she’s got a lot of spunk 👊.
I wanted to do a Ghibli-esque meal but I... didn’t even come close... but I still like what I got! Chicken tandoori babyyyyy, aka roasted chicken (I’m pretty sure). I also realized I gotta work on my perspective🤷♀️
It’s me and my best friend @lex-a-lot (who’s inktober/ artwork in general you should check out) sitting along the trail behind our college! It’s a little cheesy, but taking walks around that trail were some of my favorite moments, and they were truly tranquil times. We’d have pb&j sandwiches with Malta, and stay out there before or after classes... or during class if we needed too... those were goooooood times. We found a huge turtle out there once! The end 🤷♀️
I know snakes are venomous and not poisonous, duh. The real poison are the flowers! Did you know baby’s breath and Lilly of the valley are poisonous?? Enough to kill you possibly, I’m pretty sure?!! Anyways, #Inktober day 1 was not so bad! It’s messy, and kinda rough but I accept it! Keep it simple silly!!
I did it! I freakin’ did it! It took me 3 months... but... I was working on this as well as other illustrations the whole time!! THE WHOLE TIME!! I’m so proud of myself for finishing what I started, because let me tell you, I wanted to just throw this whole idea away SO MANY times. What really helped stay motivated to keep doing this was posting little tidbits of my progress on Instagram. When you live alone and work from home, a few positive comments about your work can really be just the right kick to get you motivated again.
I got really hung up on the colors and the way patterns would work, also my laptop is dying so my work would just vanish and that would be so frustrating obviously. But I made it, i finished it, and best of all I like my work! I even went to my ‘editor’ aka my bestfriend @lex-a-lot to get some feedback, and I made changes accordingly. Even after I was ‘finished’ the first time, I went back in and made more corrections and did some cleanups, which is something I usually slack on.
Now on to the next thing!!! I’m so excited to work on a new thing, that I just don’t know which idea to give attention to! It’s a good and bad thing, but finishing this fashion line has really pushed me to do even more!!
I’ve been seeing myself as a lion recently, not because of bravery or how majestic they are, but because... you can’t see it... but my hair looks quite similar to a lion’s mane. And then this lazy lion comic came into my head on a day (yesterday) when I didn’t feel like doing anything art related, or productive. I’m really digging this lion ‘persona’ or what have you.
I had soooo much fun with this theme! Went with a fake album cover for my fave fake band the ‘Beastly Babes’. I got so into it that I ven made a little, baby animation!

Journal time!
Woof, what a month. Not like anything crazy happened but iI feel like I was in hyperdrive when it came to drawing. I managed to draw almost every day and I really saw some improvement!

And I’m working on a 52 week challenge with my friends (super behind on thet one but at least I have 1/52 done... hehe)
I feel behind but I still feel like I’m progressing? I mean... I’m definitely doing better than I have in the last few months (couldn’t properly sit down and draw since I was moving from San Francisco to Dallas) so I feel good!
I’m dying to finish the athletic line just so I can move on to the next thing I have on my “Art to do list” but I am determined to finish this! I’ve had the problem in the past where I get excited about a new project before I even finish the one I’m working on. And these are personal projects, not assigned by someone else which makes it even harder to stick to one project. But I.am. DETERMINED!

Drew some athlete’s wearing the clothes I’ve been working on!
It’s been interesting thinking about that drapery (is that a word) that comes with wearing a hijab, and working it into athletic wear that’s meant to fit to the body and not get in the way. I love harlem pants (also called poopy pants on project runway...) and the looseness they provide, but I have to thinking about whether or not it provides flexibility. I also have to think about the kind of fabric I’d use and how it would affect the draping I’m imagining. There’s a lot to think about, but I love the research and problem solving involved.
It’s been so much fun getting back into a regular drawing schedule; I’ve been drawing pretty much everyday! Wether its with traditional paper and pencil, or digitally. I can see that practice really taking effect.
I planned on only drawing or working on one thing at a time, for example I would only work on drawing this fashion line, and move onto something else once I’m done with this. I thought this would allow me to stay focused and actually finish something. Even if I got bored, I wouldn’t move on. Buuuuuttt.... I couldn’t do that. If I get bored, I get tired of my work, and then my work looks stupid, and then I have to force myself to look at it and it just gets stupider and stupider. Soooo I’ve been doing warm-ups by participating in the #artchallengedp with @daniellepioliart, and some friends of mine started doing weekly drawing challenges that I’ve also been working on. In the past, doing too much at once would overwhelm me and I would just have a bunch of unfinished pieces, but not this time! The name of the game is DETERMINATION gosh dang it!
I’m dipping a little into the fashion illustration/ design field with a line of modest workout clothes. I’m planning on doing 5-10 designs, maybe both female and male. Being a hijabi who also likes to/ needs to work out, I cannot find workout clothes that aren’t leggings or sports bras. So I decided to think about making my own!
I started watching Project Runway in the beginning of December and felt nostalgic since I used to watch it when I was a youngin’ in high school/ college and dreamed of being a fashion designer. All the creativity that goes into the designs and garments got the artsy part of my brain itching.
With some designs I would think ‘Psssshhhh, I could do that’, in the same way you would say when walking into a museum and seeing a plain blue canvas labeled ‘fine art’, you know that feel. Other designs made me applaud and whoop, and made me think- nay, yell out loud- “I want to be able to do that!’
I will admit negativity did affect my thoughts, ‘Making clothes is too expensive, you need education in this field, and so many tools, and it’s too much effort. You can’t actually be a fashion designer!’
So, instead of going out and getting a sewing machine and applying to fashion schools, I began somewhere small and with what I do best: I started conceptualizing a fashion line. Simple silhouettes that will turn into proper pieces, and eventually into fashion illustrations! Maybe one day I’ll learn how to sew clothes and actually make these illustrations real, but until then, I’ll do what I know and in doing so, practice and hone my skills, and build a little confidence when seeing that, yes, I do know how to draw.
To keep myself on track and accountable, I’m going to try to post art and progress art along with a type of journal entry. Kind of like hyping myself up and cheering on my progress, because everyone needs to be their own cheerleader, right? Right! I won’t be putting a timeline on this ‘journal’ but I will try to post once a week, or whenever I feel super hyped about what i’m working on. Hopefully this will also give you (the person other reading this and going through my art... hi) a little insight into my progress and the way I think. This will be enlightening for both of us!
