Mantra for 2016
1. "I can't do everything today, but I can take one small step."
You have goals and ambitions, but the first step is always the hardest. Every day, we let hesitation and uncertainty stop us from acting on our ideas. Pick one plan, one goal, or one idea. And get started. Take one small step.
2. "I will do what no one else is willing to do, but will make sure I don’t take on more tasks then I can complete."
Make it a goal to take on tasks other people won’t do, this will assist you in learning more. However, don’t take on so many of these tasks that it makes you neglect your current obligations and duties
3. "I will face a fear, the fear of failure and the anxiety that comes with it."
I will look into myself and fight my anxiety, my fears of disappointment, failure, and self-worth.
4. "I will appreciate someone unappreciated."
Do more than say a reflexive "thanks" to someone who does a thankless job. Smile. Make eye contact. Exchange a kind word. All around you are people who work hard with little or no recognition. Vow to be the person who recognizes at least one of them every day.
5. "I will listen 10 times more than I speak."
We all know how much you love talking, but many times the answer you may be looking for, or didn’t even know you were looking for, is in someone else’s words. Instead of interjecting your opinion, stop, breathe and listen to what someone else has to say. Truly listen, don’t drift off into your own world when someone else is speaking, take the time to absorb what is being said. You will have stronger, sincere responses and know when to and not to speak
6. "I will not care what other people think."
This has always been something very important to you. Your friends and family are important to you, but you need to remember what is most important: your OWN self worth. What other people think of you is not important, so there is no need to compare yourself to someone else. Instead, let people see the true you and all the reasons why you are a likable person. Do not take other people’s problems on for yourself.
7. "I will be OK with less than perfect."
Holding yourself to a high standard is good, it sets a bar for yourself that you should actively work to achieve. However, realize that not making it 100% perfect is OK. Instead of being hard on yourself about a failure or not perfecting something, look at what you have done correctly and what could help you improve without berating yourself
8. "Eat out at most 3 times a week, eat at home the rest"
You need to prepare for the worst, health-wise and financially. Limiting the times you eat out will help you save money and encourage you to eat healthy. You found that eating out was the 2nd biggest cost for you last year, aside from rent
9. "The one thing I can always do is outwork them."
Things will be tough, you didn’t pick this profession because it would be easy. You picked it to learn, become a more technically aware indiviudal, and a strong problem solver. Most importantly, you picked this as the first stepping stone towards your ultimate goal, happiness. Remember what got you here, your hard work, sincerity, and good nature. When you feel low, fall back on these skills and you will make it
10. "I will stop and smell my roses."
Every night before going to bed, write 3 things that you accomplished. 3 reasons why you are better than the day before. Wake up every morning and say 3 things that you appreciate, that you have. Enjoy your life, do things you love, meet new people, and simply just smile.
The Easy Way to install Scala on Mac OS X
If you download Scala from the official site, it comes as a tgz archive of folders containing binaries. In other words, it’s a stand-alone install that you can put wherever you want. If you’re like me and would prefer Scala tucked away in the operating system, you’ll want to start by installing the awesome OS X package manager, Homebrew.
First, make sure you have Xcode installed (it’s free in the Mac App Store) with its optional command line tools installed (in Xcode go to Preferences, Downloads, and click “Install” next to Command Line Tools).
Next, install Homebrew by running the following in a terminal:
ruby -e “$(curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/install/master/install)”
Note: The above command is changed by the Homebrew guys from time to time. If the above command doesn’t seem to be working, check the Homebrew website for the latest incantation: http://brew.sh/
Follow the instructions and enter your system password when prompted. Once Homebrew is installed, it’s super easy to install Scala by typing the following in a terminal:
brew install scala
Homebrew will install Scala in /usr/local, which is important for a number of reasons, and it also puts the man pages for the Scala tools in the appropriate place.
If your next step is to learn Scala, I’m finding “Programming in Scala” to be very helpful. It was written by the creator of Scala, Martin Odersky, and the first edition is free online at http://www.artima.com/pins1ed/.
