La familia | Brooklyn ‘18

In college I would read stories and watch movies about gays running away from home and finding a “chosen family,” although my running away from home was more metaphorical than physical, I ended up finding my chosen family nonetheless. People I would grow to appreciate the most.

I love my real family, and despite all the drama, I couldn’t have asked for a better one— I mean I could’ve, but I was born into middle class America at the end of the 20th centuy, so I’m checking my privilege, because I knew ow it could’ve been a lot worse.

But loving your family is more primal— it’s an instinct. So long as they don’t ignore us or bring harm to us, we tend to automatically love them basically for just always being there. Maybe that’s just me,

But with friends, people you are not tied to in anyway, you get to determine whether they stay in or out of your life— and for me to have some of the amazing beautiful people as friends, who love and view me the same way, just means the world to me.
