I couldn’t figure out why Black Christmas was billed to me as a feminist film at first, once I’d finished watching it.

Then I realized. The women in this film are people. That’s the basic fact of it, and that is also why. It’s okay for them to have lives. To make choices, even those counter to the men in their lives. To do things. To live. This is transgressive as heck.

Even when they’re dying, the film never blames them for being alive, and the person who survives isn’t one who conformed the most. She does so in spite of all these things ranged against her, thematically and plotwise.

I know that says a lot of bad things about film, and what a woman’s “place” in our society is. That’s sort of the point of examining it as such (and calling it feminist).
