i was talking abt this with 🌙📼 the other day but the way that people just so blatantly disregard grace's aspec identity is infuriating. because you just know that if subtext implied he was gay/bi/somewhere in that vein, and you tried to say that he was straight, people would get So fucking up in arms about it but because subtext implies that he's aspec, more specifically aroace with no real interest in romance Or sex, it's suddenly just ok to ignore that because it just doesn't matter as much.

character who is single and is very clearly happy that way. who talks about the only romantic relationship they were ever in very impersonally and very much implying that they did not find it fulfilling. a relationship where they even admit that their partner thought that they were not as invested in the relationship as they "should" have been. whose whole character is reliant on the crux of them finding fulfillment in an occupation that they love and the few friends they do have, because romance just isn't a thing they've ever felt they needed. who eventually has a relationship with someone who they are deeply committed to but has never expressed romantic feelings for, a situation that both parties are shown to be equally satisfied with. like it just cannot be more fucking obvious that grace is aroace and it blows my fucking mind how much people want to ignore that in favor of shipping him with some conventionally attractive man that's not even from his universe.

plus i've talked about the aspec subtext that simon has as well, which i admittedly know is not as strong but it's just. so obvious that relationships are not a thing he cares about at all. if it was you'd think that it's something that would have been factored into his story from the beginning but it isn't, literally the only things that simon has ever been shown to care about are surviving, his mother, and eden's dignity. why would relationships be something he thinks about all of a sudden. i guess you could argue that in a world that would allow him to breathe more he might be more inclined to seek relationships out but i only think that works if he hasn't had everything he's already experienced on top of that, since y'know. he would have already been shaped by his environment regardless of what happens after.

all this to say, i hate how much grace and simon's characters have been contorted into caricatures of themselves because people just Needed to find Conventionally Attracted Guy to ship both of them with. so much bldymry content is frankly doing both their characters such a disservice that it feels disrespectful and i'm tired of pretending like it's not.
