There was no sugar today. And I started to cry. My mother came to see me and hugged me, wondering what was wrong. I was unable to respond. The words caught in my throat as I sobbed against my mother's shoulder. I wanted to scream why, but I couldn't. Maybe it's because, despite my perfect average in the written exams, I feel no satisfaction, no pride. For my parents, it's normal, I'm intelligent, so it's the least I can do. Maybe it's because I can no longer create anything, write anything, or take any photos that have meaning and that I enjoy. Maybe it's because I'm tired of being the funny friend when I'm consumed to the bone by anxiety and sadness, and I'm afraid of burdening them with it. And what better way to hide everything under humor? Perhaps it's because since I woke up 8 years ago in that hospital I've wondered if I would ever be able to be happy. For 8 years now, I've been fighting as healthily as possible with my body and mind to get better. And every relapse, like today's, feels like a mini-failure. Maybe it's because of that sugar. It had to be there. I had planned my morning perfectly in my head, and I was supposed to make these cookies for a birthday. But the plan fell apart. My mother suggested other types of sugar, but it was that sugar I needed for the recipe to be perfect, for the cookies to be guaranteed delicious. But he wasn't there. Fucking sugar.
