Here’s what you can do instead of celebrating Canada Day

Years ago I stopped celebrating Canada after hearing what Indigenous voices had to say. I began donating instead. Here are some suggestions to help you get the ball rolling

Find out whose land you’re on, and donate directly to organizations that supports that community.

You can pick a cause that correlates to something you have affiliation with. I’m a dog trainer, so I’ve previously donated to Save Rez Dogs.

Support an Indigenous artist and make a donation at the same time. Kigons Creations is doing partial profit donations for her orange beaded jewelry to Residential School Survivors for the month of June. In July she will do the same with purple for Indigenous Health Care.

The IRSSS (Indian Residential School Survivor Society) is a big one right now. The IRSSS provides support through a variety of ways, including their crisis hotline [phone].

You can also donate supplies directly to land defenders in your area, or you can make donations online. Ex. 1492 Land Back Lane (Caledonia ON) legal defence fund.

Most importantly, you can take action by attending protests, aiding calls to action, amplifying Indigenous voices, and having the conversation about why you aren’t celebrating Canada Day with your friends and family.
