In Super Mario 64, the texture for the flowerbeds is actually taken from a very small cropped segment of a photo of a flower field from a Japanese texture library CD, with additional flowers drawn on top of it.

Due to the extremely small part of the source image that was used, making it very hard to identify, this was only discovered in 2025, 29 years after the game's release.

Moonbows

A moonbow, also known as a lunar rainbow or white rainbow, is a rainbow created by moonlight rather than sunlight. It's formed when light from the moon refracts and reflects off water droplets, like those in rain or mist, creating a visible arc of light in the sky. Moonbows are generally fainter and less colorful than regular rainbows, and they are much rarer due to the need for specific conditions like a full or near-full moon, clear skies, and dark skies.

Poyauhtecatl Ayauhcalli

My character, Ayauhtli, along her fellow shrine maidens in their daily lives at the ayauhcalli, "house of mist," a type of temple dedicated to the aquatic deities. This one is located in the Poyauhtecatl, better known as Mt. Tlaloc.

Here's the temple without characters:

Ayauhcalli temples were centers of purification, among other functions, including the famous ritual of the New Fire. The Poyauhtecatl was perhaps the most important natural sanctuary for Tlaloc, reason why it was also called "Tlalocan." Sources indicate that the mountain had two ayauhcalli temples, one at the summit, and another somewhere on its eastern slopes, but this one is a third fictional one on its western slopes.

Ayauhtli hasn't appeared in Codex Black yet, but curiously, she's the oldest character of the entire cast. I invented her even earlier than Donají or Itzcacalotl, although her first iteration didn't have any sort of backstory.

Happy to announce that our film, "Hoop," has landed at the great Sidewalk Film Festival (now entering its 27th year), down here in Birmingham, Alabama.

A Cirque du Soleil performer and Native hoop dancer, Eric Hernandez brings the rhythm and ritual of Native American hoop dance tradition to classically trained students at the Alabama School of Fine Arts. Through the intermingling of styles, something new begins to take shape.

I love everything about the texture and color of the New York City Subway system. The chrome, the poppy colors, the sounds…it is a specific planet in the American universe.

Sea angels effortlessly capture hearts with their fluttering wings and ethereal transparency. 

Detailed underwater photos that show off their celestial features are actually closeups – sea angels are surprisingly tiny, often smaller than your thumbnail! 

You can meet these tiny but mighty swimming snails and other captivating deep-sea animals on exhibit at the Into the Deep/En lo Profundo exhibit here at Monterey Bay Aquarium.
