There’s something so interesting about the fact that Kishimoto did such a good job of creating a rival for Naruto that he pissed off so many fans–like Sasuke did such a good job of rivalling Naruto in terms of having an ideology that actively challenged and laid bare the weak spots and hypocrisies at the heart of Naruto’s, in terms of having a storyline that didn’t directly parallel or revolve around him, in terms of proving that the attention Naruto wanted so badly wasn’t all it was cracked up to be, in terms of showing that sometimes the relationships that matter to people most aren’t ones that can be earned by becoming cool and powerful–like at nearly every turn he undermines the superficial aspects of the fantasy Naruto embodies, and maybe I’m thinking too deeply about this but I think that’s a part of the reason why he’s so widely hated.
