So you may have noticed that the lovely and radiant gamergirlfriends and I got involved in a vicious brawl lively debate with a handful of tumblr users who believed — as many gamers believe — that “sexism in gaming isn’t a thing anymore” and that “if women want to see themselves represented so badly they should just make their own video games” and that “these stories about sexism in gaming are vague/sound made up/are scarce.”

Holley and I yelled ourselves hoarse about all the ways they were wrong, repeated our points over and over, but they fell on deaf ears. And while we weren’t terribly surprised by the result, we also realized how much easier that whole situation would’ve been on our fingers if there was a blog that aggregated stories of women experiencing sexism, marginalization, underrepresentation, and erasure in the video game community.

Sure, there’s Fat, Ugly, or Slutty, and they do great work exposing gross gamer dude assholes for who they are. But we wanted to make a blog that spotlighted the women telling their own stories and sharing their own experiences, explaining what they find difficult to contend with in the gaming community and tech industry, rather than the gross gamer dude assholes who we already know are the worst.

So here it is: The Gamer Girl Project, co-modded by gamergirlfriends and me, nerdgirlelitism. Hopefully it can be used as a resource to quickly and easily demonstrate the fact that sexism is still a huge, important problem in the gaming community that many people experience with alarming frequency.

If this sounds like something you’re into, please don’t hesitate to FOLLOW and REBLOG because we’d love for this to reach the widest possible audience in hopes of spreading awareness.

And while we have a shitton of articles and reblogged personal experiences queued up for you guys, we’re not gonna get very far without submissions from you. So please, if you feel comfortable, SUBMIT YOUR STORY of sexism in the gaming community/tech industry (we also take examples from sci-fi and comic book communities — pretty much anything under the umbrella of geek/nerd is fair game). Let these jackasses know that just because they’ve never seen sexism happen (or, more likely, been on the receiving end of it) doesn’t mean it’s not happening.

Im not a troll, hand-on-heart. About a week ago, I saw a comment on tumblr effectively saying "stop playing games and get a girlfriend". It pissed me off so I posted what I did.

So apparently someone had already done that “Hasbro acquires Paizo” gag before. I had no idea, but I’ve got no problem giving credit to where credit is due. I just don’t want anyone thinking I’m ripping off somebody else’s work. RPGGeek did a gag along the exact same lines last year.

Anybody seen any other good d&d-related April’s Fools pranks?

an incredibly important message, rape is rape. no one is ever asking for it. a woman has the right to dress how ever they want - it is society that identifies risque dressing as ‘asking for it’, and in my opinion, that way of thinking needs to be diminished.
