Final Goodbye
Angst warning
Valairyn was caught up in a vision, her consciousness pulled away from her physical being, left within the pale heart, to a plane of light and tranquility. She turned when she felt a familiar presence come up behind her, gently placing a solid palm to the middle of her back to draw her attention. Cayde. She knew it was him before she even saw him, always aware of when he was near, but it felt different this time. She could feel and sense him there in front of her, but there lacked a feeling of solid wholeness that she usually felt when he was close. Valairyn gazed at him inquiringly trying to piece together what was happening and where she was. A sense of forlorn over came her with the sudden realization of what was happening with the shift of the energy around her and the look in his eyes. She didn’t understand why this was happening again, but there was a look of finality in his gaze that she couldn’t deny. He didn’t have to say a thing, she knew without words what was happening. Tears began to stream down her face knowing he was saying goodbye, this would be the last time she’d see him alive.
“Cayde, don’t- please don’t go. I don’t know what happened but I can’t survive you leaving me again.” She threw herself into his arms, willing with her mind, body and soul for him to stay, holding on to him for dear life, trying to anchor him to her.
Cayde’s arms encircled her closely, one hand cupping the back of her head, holding her securely against his frame. “I’m sorry sweetheart, but this was my choice. Forgive me for leaving you again, but this time it was on my terms.” All of his Light had already left him to resurrect the Ghost of his fellow guardian, but as it did so, he willed a piece of his Light to seek out his girl, so he could give her a proper goodbye like she deserved. He couldn’t stay but he could leave a piece of him with her that he hoped would help her heal, to stave off the loss and grief in his absence. He couldn’t do it before due to the limitations of his synthetic body but with the gift of his remaining Light and blessing of the Traveler, she’d always have a piece of him around to be remembered by.
“I’m making sure a little bit of my Light stays with you. You’ll always have a piece of me.”
“Please Cayde!” She continued to sob and gripped on even more tightly as she felt his presence fade further.
Last thing she felt were his arms around her and the soft pressure of his mouth to her hairline as he whispered his heartfelt goodbye.
“I love you sweetheart, never forget that…”

The time that passed following the loss of Cayde was long, painful and heartbreaking but her heart began to slowly heal as her abdomen swelled with the gift of a new light growing within her. Cayde would always be with her just as he had promised, with their Lights now combined in the creation of something new that they had never thought possible. Tears of grief and love spilled from her eyes when she finally met the product of their combined Light.
“Cayde…thank you…” Valairyn sobbed as she kissed the small infant that looked up at her with strikingly familiar blue eyes.
“One day Cayce when you’re older I’ll tell you about your father; Hunter Vanguard, one of the best gunslingers, big heart and complete idiot. He hated being stuck in The Tower…” She knew they didn’t understand anything she was saying yet, but telling them of Cayde and all that he was, continued the process of healing a grieving heart for a lover lost.
