You jolt awake with a silent gasp. You kick the sheets off your feet, unable to stand anything similar to ties around your limbs. You shiver despite the drops of sweat on your forehead. It was a nightmare again, the same one.
Less of a dream and more of a memory of the time you were held in a mutant testing facility. You rub the scars on your wrists, the vivid memory of the metal cuffs that once burrowed into your skin sending another shiver up your spine. There are fresh scratches across your wrists. A frequent habit of your sleeping self, clawing at the ghost of the binds that once held you.
Your bare feet are on the floor before you even have a conscious thought. You leave the comfort of your bed and wrap your arms around yourself as you walk out into the dark hallway. You walk straight across the hall and nudge open Rogue’s door. There’s just enough moonlight coming in through the curtains for you to see that her bed is empty.
“Nightmare?” You jump at Raven’s voice and turn slowly to face the blue woman. You nod softly as she reaches out, taking each of your wrists in one of her hands. She brings your hands up slowly, yellow eyes glowing in the dark as she looks at your wrists.
“It’s fine, Mommy.” You know better than to try to hide them, so you shift anxiously side to side as she examines them. You hope she won’t bring out the irritating wrist guards. They make you sleep with them when the scratching gets really bad. It wouldn’t be horrible if they didn’t make your hands sweat like crazy all night.
“Where’s Rogue?” You ask quietly, trying to distract her.
She ignores your question at first and brings your hands higher, kissing the inside of each of your wrists in turn. Your chest warms at the soft brush of her blue lips against your skin. “She’s in the gym. We’re training.” She offers no explanation for how she just happened to stumble across you in the hallway or why they're training in the middle of the night.
“Can I come?” You ask. You doubt you’d be effective at anything training-wise, given your half-asleep state, but you don’t want her to force you to go back to your own bed. You had hoped to be able to crawl into Rogue’s bed and cuddle with her like you usually do. The thought of Raven sending you back to bed alone makes you pout.
She shakes her head before jerking it in the direction of her bedroom. “Go get in bed with Mama.” She releases your wrists and pushes your shoulders, turning you in the right direction. With a gentle nudge, she pushes you down the hall before returning back to Rogue in the gym.
You try to be quiet as you open the bedroom door, but Irene stirs anyway. “C’mere, sweetheart.” She lifts the edge of her blanket up, holding it open to you. You stumble forward in the dark, half-crawling, half-falling into bed beside her. You bump against her and she grunts softly.
“Sorry, Mama.” You whisper as she scoots further from the edge.
“Shhh.” She shushes you quietly and drops the blanket to rest over your shoulders. You curl against her as she wraps her arm around you. You tuck your head against her chest, letting the calming thud of her heartbeat lull you into a dreamless sleep.
