i'm so haunted (for lack of a better term) by the potential hauntological and thanatological impact of rocky and grace's relationship in phm and their respective incompatible lifespans. like. it's established that eridians can and do experience an equivalent to grief with the deaths of rocky's crew and his reactions to that, but do they have a concept equatable to haunting? it's possible and entirely likely that they never conceptualised ghosts, or even anything similar, which means that grace's inevitable death in rocky's lifetime has the potential to "infect" him with that distinctly human experience via cultural exchange (since grace himself is a profoundly haunted individual by nature of his forcible abjection from earth). this is barely coherent but i'm so fascinated by how rocky may be a legitimate (hypothetical) example of stone tape theory put into practice by nature of his eidetic memory, and how project hail mary is arguably a ghost story. which is kind of a hilarious implication for a hard scifi narrative.

anyway anyway. she kills him. by accident, of course! but he dies right there and then, face down in the grass. and then i was thinking about Voyager 1, which we still have contact with even though it's been up there in space 50 years, and how they send commands to it?

what if they put grace's brain in the hail mary? wire it all in so it's all connected to the ship's systems. and they send it up there anyway, unconscious until they lose contact with it... then when he wakes up, grace's whole body is the mary....!! spiritually bricked up on a thursday afternoon

The short of it is, yes, that's exactly what happens. There's no such thing as pure silence outside of a vacuum (and inside a vacuum you'd be dead). So basically your ears are constantly adapting to the noise threshold of your surroundings and slowly ignoring it. If you were in a perfectly silent room (anechoic chambers are cool!) you would actually start to hear the sound of existing!

i think this scenario would manage to make even fig feel awkward, none of the usual confidence, just kind of shellshocked and reticent. having to break to mitsi the state vic was in after she died, and deal with vic being essentially gone right now, and their entire worldview about chosen being shaken- s'a lot!

And it wants to get Vic back, from whatever is happening, because she does not know much- But it fills her in on at least a bit of what happened before hand, dancing around some topics but- that Dark tricked Vic into a way to revive you- yes, with a Kid, yes it realizes how that is, but later- but instead used it to trap you away and it's guessing, it was going to control you. But... Vic freed you, and left it with you. Which leaves so many questions but. Later.

Later, just like everything it is 'feeling'. It can't acknowledge that. It can't. As a last spark, it can't.

I'd venture to say he doesn't love his daughter Poppy either. If he truly loved her, he would have let her rest in peace after her death and tried to raise another child normally. Elliot's behavior strikes me as obsessive, since he kills and harvests the organs of another child to see if his "formula" can revive his daughter Poppy. He really does use Ollie, and all for Poppy; he doesn't sound all that "understanding" with Ollie on the cassette in episode 5 either.

And I agree that I don’t think Eliot genuinely loved poppy either- hes just as obsessed with her as the prototype is- maybe even more all things considered and the worst part is that if he’d only stop and thought things through then he’d realize that him succeeding in bringing her back is ultimately damning her.

She’s stuck as a porcelain doll and can never grow up- she can’t even go into society again because people will want to experiment on her. Any dreams she had of traveling the world, meeting people and maybe carrying on her dad’s legacy are over. She’s fragile and can break. she’s immortal and will outlive and outlast everyone she loves.

What is there left for her to do other than to just play with her aging father who was barely paying attention to his failing company at the time?

And this isn’t even scraping the surface of the honestly justified albeit misdirected resentment and bitterness other experiments would feel towards her (the way he did Ollie was horrific. He perfectly manipulated him into wanting this (promising someone who’d come from a broken home a better place) didn’t deny Ollie’s lack of humanity/loss of identity (he reinforced it by saying things couldn’t go back to the way they were and that he’d call him something else) and not once in that tape did he ever deny his ulterior motive being for poppy- and don’t get me started on him leaving Ollie’s body unburied- and never letting Ollie meet poppy.

It’s a cruel reality that he’s confined her to- one that I genuinely have to ask- What about that was better off than just leaving her to rest in peace?

We don’t know much about planet Erid beyond the very basics, but planets that have iron core usually feature volcanic activity and therefore magma and other materials movement underneath the planet surface.

So considering this…

Do you think ancient Eridians ever lied down on the ground to listen to the voice of their planet? Keeping very still and waiting for a faint and distant sound from down below to reach them.

I would imagine that to be possible mostly near the volcanoes, where magma comes closer to the crust (planet surface). So do you think those ancient Eridians were coming to the fire breathing mountains to listen to planet’s songs?

Did they consider their planet alive in those long ago times? Maybe they worshipped it as their creator and parent? After all, their bodies are so similar to its. They sing to each other just as the planet sings to them from time to time.

I think the reason why the entity can't act like the real Nikki is because he's not really in love with her, he's just obsessed with the idea he has of Nikki (the father thing proves he doesn't know her that well either) and wish!Nikki is that idea in the flesh.

Nikki is the real victim here.

Wish!Nikki is right when she tells him that what's happening is all because of him and his wish.

Everything that's happening is because he's a spineless, selfish coward.

Bear could be excused just at the start, cuz nobody would think that shit could really work.

But as the story progresses?

He knows, hell he can see that something isn't right, and he doesn't give a single fuck cuz he finally has the object of his desires!

He only did something when he realised his stupid wish was fucking up is life.

He didn't do jack shit when Nikki was clearly acting like a psycho.

When the guy on the phone asked him if he wanted to cancel the wish (before he knew he couldn't) what did he answer? "No, I just want to change it a bit".

We can see real Nikki freaking out/being disgusted every time she regains control for a couple of seconds!

When the real Nikki asks him to kill her, what does he say? “What's so bad about loving me?”

Hell, she clearly tells him she never was with him as in "all this time you been fucking the entity, not me"!

What more do you need to understand that you can't excuse him by saying "poor Bear" since he continues to act like nothing is wrong nearly 'till the end while Nikki, poor Nikki, is a rape victim throughout the entire movie?

[That's why she bawls her eyes out at the end. When Bear is dying she's like "what did you do?" as in "I love you, why did you kill yourself?" because the wish is still active and she is still possessed. But the moment he dies you can hear the switch and that “what did you do?” takes on a totally different meaning. What she's really asking him is "what did you do to me?"]

To me, it was clear from the beginning of the movie that Bear is the classic "woe is me, nobody wants me good guy" who thinks only about himself and takes no responsibility for his actions.

Who's at fault for the cat's death?

The poor cat or the idiot who left the pill bottle lying around, clearly open?

Nikki tells him that she wants to leave her job because she's not happy and wants to focus on her writing, and his first reaction is "but what about me?"

Nikki gives him the opportunity to talk about his feelings, she clearly asks him if he likes her and his dumbass says nope we're just good friends!

He could have wished for the courage to declare his feelings but no!

That cowardly ass was so terrified of rejection that not only did he wish for Nikki to love him, but he wished she would love him more than anything in the world!

Created to love him (more than anything else on the fucking planet, which is a LOT for something that came into existence a few weeks/a few months ago) which he doesn’t even hold a candle to, has zero clue how to be a human, is possessing the REAL Nikki’s body while likely feeling it to be her own, since she was ‘born’ in it, etc

the longer I sit with obsession the more empathy I start to feel for entity!nikki. this creature that was created solely to love one person with this all-encompassing intensity that needed to be stronger than anything anyone felt in the entire world. entity!nikki whose entire world was just one single focal point; she'd do anything for bear to love her. she didn't know anything when she came into existence, but she was willing to do anything to get this man to fall for her.

it must have been equally terrifying for her as it was for the real nikki to have someone else fight for control over what you perceive as your body. the scene where she's sobbing in the corner, terrified of her dreams is now more sad than terrifying to me. real nikki, who had just been raped by her once best friend hurting so badly that it seeps into entity!nikki's nightmares. entity!nikki who doesn't understand why the thing she wanted so badly is causing her so much pain. why she can't bring herself to lie in bed next to him.

and the worst part is bear doesn't even seem to like her. she's trying so so hard; she made a lovely memorial for his dead cat, she waited for him to come home all day without moving an inch, she made sure to be the most doting girlfriend at the party, and he's not pleased by any of it. he seems disturbed and angry and scared and she has no idea what to do to make it better. to make it worse, he keeps asking her to behave like the original nikki but he was the one who wished for her!! but she tries to be her anyways but she can't because the original nikki didn't love bear even a fraction of how much she does!

she can't seem to reconcile it; he wanted her so badly he wished for it and now he doesn't want her anymore. she doesn't know what to do. she tries everything. she obsesses over him, she threatens to hurt herself, she gets rid of that bitch sarah who keeps distracting him and trying to steal him away, and then dresses in her clothes for good measure and he still doesn't want her.

and then finally in a fit of desperation, she makes the wish and for one beautiful moment its all perfect. he's finally looking at her the way she looks at him. and then he's dead and she's lost everything.

her entire existence, from the moment of her conception to her death was painful, and confusing, and so very sad.

The ‘monster’ is a victim too. She’s the personification of his own obsession reflected back at him. She holds so much love inside of her, more than anyone in the entire world.

But that love is twisted, it’s broken and wrong, because that love came from and is reflected back at the wrong person.

She IS his wish personified. She’s came into existence when he spoke those words in another persons body.

She is love, but the worst kind.

like. a creature that perceives the intangible? a creature that walks with thin permeable membranes bared to the air, whose blood contains elixir that can destroy pathogens without heat? a creature that is impossibly fragile yet resilient? a creature that breathes potently flammable gas to survive? a creature that is loud all over and speaks in a strange and frightening monotone, who thought it would die for you? who gave up its home in the heavens for you without meeting you first, whose first words to your people were probably something along the lines of We saved your star. It's gonna be okay. Don't be afraid.

While waiting for her mate to return Adrian spends her days studying the various soft flesh creatures on Erid. It's her job, her passion, and is almost enough to fill the emptiness that's been lurking inside her for over forty years. But during a normal day out in the field Erid government agents whisk her away to help solve a problem of theirs: A strange soft flesh being from another world that's missing an arm and clearly dying. What starts as what can best be described as a 'mild kidnapping' turns into so much more as Adrian decides that studying this strange alien creature also means befriending it. Assuming it wants to be befriended.

Chapter Two - In Which Adrian Gets a New Job

Well despite me getting YET ANOTHER HORRIBLE ILLNESS (that's four this month for those counting) I have finished chapter two of To Observe Soft Flesh! Now that I've spent two chapters desperately trying to explain how Simon doesn't die instantly on an alien planet let's get this friendship going!

can't stop thinking about how hysterical project hail mary would be from rocky's pov when you consider that, by eridian standards, basic human functioning is simultaneously an incredibly hostile and violently perverted body horror fetish nightmare. imagine you make first contact with an alien and it's an apex predator with an obscene number of orifices, made up mostly of toxic substances that it oozes constantly from said orifices, thrives in an unforgivingly cold and suffocating atmosphere, is highly motivated by searching for its next meal + consumes its food publicly in violation of your society's main taboo, and is capable of rapidly transitioning from vulnerable in sleep to alert and in full possession of its faculties at the slightest change in stimuli. grace is in a heartwarming scifi buddy comedy and meanwhile rocky is bonded with and planning on bringing home his species' equivalent of the xenomorph.

Eridians are apex predators. Humans, despite considering ourselves the top of the food chain, actually fall into the same trophic level as pigs and anchovies—tertiary omnivores.

But humans are pursuit predators. And Eridians seem more likely to be ambush predators.

What I'm saying is on that years-long trip to Erid there were absolutely several instances of Rocky & Grace doing something that was absolutely terrifying to the other one and then having to be like "oh yeah no that's normal. Sorry."
