Can't stress this enough but the recent Berdly discourse going on utdrtwt has showed me how absolutely hypocritical this fandom is when it comes to Berdly, telling Berdly fans that they need to accept his flaws and that he's a 'bad' person is why this discourse is never going to age well. The one characters whose face constant scrutiny and critism since chapter 1, having each chapter have to tell to the players face that there is nothing wrong with him, and the limit is Berdly fans just wanting to see more of him and have his development be properly concluded????

I promise you, Berdly fans know very well of his flaws because the fandom shoves them down our throats everytime we try to have a proper discussion about him. So no, I will not be taking the discourse seriously bcs it's coming from fans who would grab their pitchforks everytime their favs gets acknowledge for not being perfect either. So I'll say this to my fellow Berdly and Kerdly fans, be loud and annoying. Who cares, post all the posts you want about Berdly/Kerdly bcs these ppl aren't gonna change their minds so why should you?

Have all the discussions on Berdly, acknowledge his flaws, and be positive bcs at the end of the day no one can truly tell you how to interact with a character but your own self.

Berdly is probably my favorite side character in Deltarune. Which is funny to me, because I think he would just be a character I really like, if it weren't for the fact that other people seem to hate him so much. It's like this,

Chapter 1 introduces us to Susie. She is mean and abrasive and the way she treats people is just downright awful at times. And then, over the course of the chapter, you see more sides to her. And you realize that a lot of her earlier actions were a combination of projection and masking her true self, and deep down there is a good person there. And since she's a main character, you look forward to seeing her growth.

Then, chapter 2 (properly) introduces Berdly. He is mean and abrasive and the way he treats people is downright awful at times.

So I go "cool, I've seen this before, I know that he is projecting/masking and there is a good person in there, though because he isn't a main character these details and his growth won't be as obvious/focused on as Susie"

And then it feels like some people take that initial mean-ness and decide that is all he is. And whenever I see a post about it, or watch a lets-play where people tell him to fuck off while he talks about his past, and I wonder if we played the same game.

So yeah, for some reasons seeing a lot of vitriol towards Berdly just made me like and appreciate the details of him more and more until now he's my favorite side character.

Whole discourse on twt regarding Berdly is just chalking up to ppl being mad that folks actually genuinely like Berdly over the main 4.

Berdly called in ch4 and found out Noelle, Kris and Susie were hanging out without him. Okay! Small town, the 7 students the same age aren't gonna hang out togheter all the time. It's not like hes insecure about being annoying or anything at all.

Ch5: Gets rejected by Noelle and Susie on the festival, they're togheter!!! That's AWESOME!!! and then they(suselle) let kris be with them but not him....okay... and probably gets regected by kris in his head due to them sticking out with the girls.....

And If all of that is NOT enough: they will add Noelle to their amazing cool ass adventures in the dark world while he just... does the project alone because mind you, they've been stealing noelle from their project for 3 days straight.

rant incoming and maybe im being the friend thats too woke but it really irks me how berdly is treated by the fandom...i get jokes but it gets to a point where you cant mention berdly AT ALL without someone taking the piss out of him. He is a slightly annoying but very well meaning TEENAGER!!! HE IS A KID!!! Not to mention hes so blatantly neurodivergent coded and its such a reflection of how so many neurodivergent people are treated irl.

People support neurodivergent people until theyre kind of annoying. Until they dont understand social cues or roles the way you think they should. Until they act in a way you think is cringe.

I feel like a lot of people don't fully understand that Berdly has two very conflicting and hand-in-hand mindsets that co-exist within him, and end up ignoring one or the other.

The "I need to be better than everyone else to matter", and the "I don't truly matter and never will".

You cannot finish his arc nor development without addressing both of them, I fear.

If the story were to ignore the problem with his behaviour (especially in chapters 1, 2, and 4) it would end up rewarding Berdly's selfish, controlling, and mean-spirited actions. That would suck, since it would imply that people need to put up with his attitude, and that he's actually in the right about having to be superior to truly matter to anyone. It would also stunt Noelle's development by making her more of a passive force in her own story, wich, of course, would also suck. This would make their dynamic even more bitter than it already was too, since Noelle would never get to voice her own opinions to him, thus building more resentment inside of her and the players while Berdly stays the same.

On the other hand, if the story were to ignore his presence completely by excluding him from the group or any relatively important plot-line, it would end up rewarding Berdly's self-deprocating mentality instead. That would also suck, since it would imply that he was actually right all along and that the mini speech he was given in the Cyber World by Susie was some sort of cruel joke. Regardless of how useful he was there, or how hurt he got there, lying to him about the experience until the Roaring inevitably happens would confirm that, actually, he is forgettable and a charity case to anyone who he considers a friend, no matter how much he could change for the better. Everything about this would go against the themes of second chances and "Don't Forget", while also making his screentime a waste of time without conclusion.

So no: he isn't this perfect little guy that was done dirty by selfish Noelle and that should go to the Dark Worlds in her place because he's "just that better". And no: his arc isn't finished enough to exclude him from the group completely since he still has a shitty ass mentality going on. I don't think he should be rewarded with praise, but I also don't think he should be punished with his biggest fear when he could have the chance to become a better friend and confirm someone does care.

I will now be putting my imaginary "I love nuance" hat on top of my Berdly-themed one because I'm tired of these extremes 💔 read my tags if you want idk

Hey so did kris keep their friendship with berdly a secret from their parents

At the end of chapter 5 asgore says he and toriel were worried that kris wouldn't get another friend other than asriel, the obvious implication here is that he means post the dess incident since that's when kris and noelle stopped hanging out. But this also implies 1 of 2 things. Either 1: kris also stopped hanging out with berdly after the dess incident or more interestingly 2: Kris kept their friendship with berdly a secret from their parents

There is no exact timeline on when exactly the dess incident happened as far as I know, but we know kris and berdly started playing together because of the sweepstakes which we ALSO know was at most a few months to a year before chapter 1 due to the susie interaction that gets mentioned. (The one where kris tells susie something and it freaks her out enough to let go of them) So unless dess went missing WAYYYYY closer to the present than we thought, this HAS to mean kris hid their friendship with Berdly. Hell the only reason WE know about it is through flavour text and what Berdly says directly.

Just food for thought, that Kris seemingly did have a friendship of some kind they purposely kept hidden and it continues to be semi hidden ESPECIALLY from the player controlling Kris.

Berdly hate makes me sad. He's not a bad guy, he's just an awkward teenager who doesn’t have a lot of friends and wants to be appreciated. He's really supportive of Noelle, he really cares about her and seem to appreciate Kris and Susie a lot too, he just has a hard time reading the room sometimes, it’s not his fault...
