Last Blog for CWP 102

I am feeling partly sad that this is the last blog I will be writing but I am also excited because this also means the semester is nearly over. At first, seeing there was a blog due every Sunday in the syllabus had me internally groaning and I am sure I must have rolled my eyes about ten times. I was not excited about it but they grew on me and I have come to enjoy them. The more creative topics made me look forward to the blogs each week, obviously I did not enjoy them all.  

Blogging has not just brought me a sense of calmness and enjoyment but it has taught me new skills. I feel more confident in my ideas and opinions. I feel more willing to share and discuss with my peers. Blogging has allowed me reach out to my peers and to grab their attention.I have always felt that no one would be interested in my thoughts or what I had to say. I have also learned the importance of continuously writing wether I enjoy the topic or not. It gets the gears in my head turning and ideas just start to spit out. My writing has changed from third person to first, bringing myself more into my own writing.  

All of the writing assignments and blogs have taught me to focus on my topic  and what is important. I have always struggled with giving too much details that are irrelevant or going off topic. I still have much to learn and improvements to be made however from my first assignment to my last, there has been improvement in that area. I have improved in breaking up my paragraphs.  

I hope to start a new blog and continue to work on my writing. This class has changed what I have thought of blogging and broken the limitations I have placed on myself. I hope to challenge myself and push to be a stronger writer.

Scholarly Gap

For project 3, I did research on cheating. When I was doing research I found that many researchers were focused on which sex cheats more, why couples cheat and who is more likely to get caught or confess. There was no study about what cheating is. It seems weird to ask why they would want to study that but everyone has their own meaning and interpretations of words/things. The scholarly Gap I found is what is constituted as cheating in the ages between 19 and 24 and is if different in comparison to those 30 and older. And so I was going to give a definition of cheating but since I am trying to figure out what certain age groups consider cheating. I would like to have had had data from a few years ago but seeing as I haven't found anyone who has researched this I do not have data to compare to. And so I think I should have both age groups take surveys and see if they're similar. If I had data to rely on then I would be able to conclude if what is considered cheating has cheated and is it accenting?

My topic is cheating and at first I wanted to do research on why men cheat on their partners especially those who are good to them. However, after speaking to Mary Beth and doing research I realized I needed to research something else. I stuck with cheating but asked a different question. Asking why men cheat, there was already lots of research on that and it was already answered so there was not a scholarly gap there. After reading article after article and advice from Mary Beth, I found my gap. What is constituted as cheating and I want to know specifically with those around the ages 19-24 and more so college students.  

There is more research on cheating in the sense of sex. It was difficult for project 2 to find scholarly articles that backed up my photos. I wrote a list of things I myself consider cheating and I will present it to you, those in my age group to see what you all consider or do not consider cheating. I found a lot of research as to why people think it is okay to cheat and  a lot of it came down to their partners not being able to find out and because they wanted to. I am hoping that figuring out what people in my age group consider cheating and how it may or may not differ to younger and older people. I also hope to see if what is considered cheating has changed from the last few decades. I know in the recent years society has become more open minded to positive and negative things. I wonder if cheating has become more accepting in certain circumstances and if more things are consider cheating or are not considered cheating. Does what constitute as cheating differ among age groups? I have many questions and so maybe while gathering more data, i may find more scholarly gaps and change my question. My research will inlude scholarly journals/ articles and a survey. I am very excited and looking forward to this project.

School Violence

School violence is youth violence that sometimes may take on school a property, or even some students may face or fear a act of violence will walking home from school or during a school events which can leading to young children losing their lives over nothing that could’ve been prevented. A young person can be a victim, a suspect, or a witness of school violence. School violence may also involve adults and the impacts they have towards their own child or in some cases what they have experience. The thought of thinking about students don’t care enough for a school that they would just want to damaging the school’s atmosphere. Putting students in fear to enter the premises of the school fearing acts of violence against them or around them. This also very badly affects the learning environment of the school. They usually lose focus and start to lack on their education. If young people aren’t taught from an early age about the consequences of what is wrong and what is right they start to feel as if they can do what they want on their own. Education does not always have to be taught at home or in the class, but most importantly through the parents. And because of the lack of parenting students are now bringing guns, knives, and other weapons to school, and many of these students are using them to hurt and kill. A student who faces lack of love and attention may also become violent. They usually look for it at schools if they don’t get it from home and when they are at school there are no supportive teachers, so they feel it is okay to disrespect teachers and the other students in the class. The teacher is not helping a student through difficulties, and which leads to frustration. It is the teacher’s duty to guide the student and help to him/her. A student may also result to violence when he/she is unsure of his career or future and hence proper guidance and the help that is required.In a world with so many cruel people and different perspectives it hard for us to come together and help the violence decrease. Just because we do all come from different races, different sexual orientations and different nationalities. We shouldn’t feel like we don’t fit in with different groups of people and be equal without any violence. It can be harder to find your place if everyone around you makes fun of you for the qualities which make you different but if we teach our youth that we are all equal then there will be less hatred towards one another. As school violence creates a large amount of problems and troubles we need to help this issue and try to prevent or reduce violence in schools. It is not only important for the child’s career but for our children’s safety. We shouldn’t have to be afraid of sending our kids to school because other students we need to teach them proper way to treat one another. It is the responsibility of schools and parents to give proper guidance, equality, support, love, care and affection to our youth. These things can easily reduce or prevent such kind of inhumane attitude.

This is worth discuss about and I love the ideas and facts you state. It is so sad that there a children who fear attending schools. Schools are suppose to be children's safe havens for children and learning. Fearing to attend school by seeing violence or being bullied or hurt is such a waste and ruins the child's education. When did school become about who is tough and popular and who looks better? School is about furthering yourself and pushing yourself to pass your limits so you can make a life for yourself. It's also so sad for parents to see their children to be bullied or be bullies. I would love to discuss this in class. You brought up an amazing topic and you made such valid points.

Blog #7

With the topic of this blog being based upon an issue we don’t talk about in class, my mind wondered. There are many topics I feel that we don’t touch upon, but I feel like we should. To me a major one is actually one of the simplest ones. Communication in today’s society has been downgraded greatly. It is sad how now a days people can barely have a face to face conversation. And even so if they are conversing, the quality of conversations has decreased as well. I feel that the advancement of technology we have been taking and our society is to blame for this current issue.

           Back in the days people had to actually talk to someone to find out what was wrong with them, or even to find out something in general. Now people can just look at someone’s social media to find out how they are feeling sometimes. It seems like people are more comfortable talking through text, then they are actually talking face to face with someone. This trend of anti-socialness to me is because of social media and phones. I feel that even though cell phones contribute largely to this problem, our society also contributes as well to it.

           Society today has pretty much made it seem that the best type of communication is little to no communication at all. I find that pretty sad because that is the way that people end up having issues because of miscommunication. Then one party ends up upset because the other never stated what was on their mind first. Also I feel like communication in relationships because society has decreased too. Society deems it to be cool to hang out with your boys all day and not communicate with the girl that’s really down for you, but in turn it could also be the opposite way.

           With all this being said, there is still way more levels to this issue of communication decreasing in society. I feel like it is in important issue that should be brought up in class because a lot of people suffer from simply not speaking about what is on their mind. If people just communicated more on the daily then everyone’s life would be a little easier. Also if everyone put down the electronic devices every once and a while to communicate, I feel that we would learn something interesting about someone every day

I agree with this and even sometimes feel myself sinking into this way of communicating. I remember a time when I would talk to friends on my house phone and talk a lot in person. This is a great topic to discuss. We get stuck in our phones, always looking in to it, checking messages and social media. It sucks that we use to be a society who has deep conversations and meet up to catch ups days would be spent with friends and family experiencing the world around us. Now all young people and even some adults do is sit around a group of friends and each persons head would be down looking into their phones. It's an issue and is worth discussing. I think you touched on the importance of discussing it in class. Great job at touching on the subject and it's affect on people and your stance. I hope we discuss this in class and you voice your opinions.

Equal Opportunity between men and women wages

Do you know that Men get paid more than woman? Did you know that society consider woman  to be housewives? i feel like this is one topic we can discuss in class. what does is it really mean though? Are females paid less because they choose lower paying jobs?  Do they get paid less because they have more care-giving responsibilities or maybe even because they do more part time work than men do? But, the real question is what does gender bias as to do with the paychecks being giving?

According to “AAUW” the truth about gender pay gap is succinctly addresses these issue by 80% statistics. The reason Men get paid more than woman is because woman are the ones to get pregnant and have to take days off to get checked out also the company would have to pay you for not working those days. Also health insurance i think the company would be responsible for that covering hospital bills and plus sick days. 

Do you know that if your a woman and an minority that it is 10 times harder for you  to make it in this world.The full time workers in 2015,  Hispanic, African american, american Indian, and native Hawaiian had lower median earnings compared to non-Hispanic whites and Asian woman. They also only made 80 cents for every dollar that a man has made with a gender wage gap of 20 percent. i feel as if men are more demanding in what they want also and woman just settle for whatever they are offered. In the middle skill occupation workers in jobs mainly done by women only earn about 66% of workers in the job that are actually done by men.

I believe this is a relatively important topic to discuss. Even though it is 2016, men and women still are not treated the same. Why should it be okay for men to get paid more than a woman? Hard work should not based off a person’s skin color, ethnicity, or gender. So why it is that society does that today? Yes woman are incapable of going to work when they are about to go in labor. Clearly, it’s hard to work under those conditions so why should that be a factor in limiting our checks? It’s ok for a man to help impregnate a woman but, when it comes to the money deduction pregnancy plays a factor.

This is an excellent topic, I think we should discuss this in class. It is a topic I feel a lot of classmates(females) can connect with. Also the females can see what/ how the male's about men getting paid more than woman for doing the same job. It's important to talk about the fact that it is almost 2017 and there is still so much inequality. I think many men have this idea that they're better at things than woman and so they believe they deserve more money. This is an interesting topic, I hope to discuss it in class.

Why go to college?

In cwp 102, I would have liked to discuss why people who did not do well in high school decided to go to college? I know many people who hated school and did not show up much. When they were in class they were distracted and did not pay attention. Those people just made it to graduation requirements. I would like to discuss why people with these characteristics decided to attend college. Is it true that college is not for everyone? One of my high school teachers said everyone can't succeed, it isn't how life works. There's those at the top, the middle and the bottom. He once said if everyone went to college and succeeded then we wouldn't have men to pick up the garbage, put out salt when it snows, drive buses or hotels, etc. I know there are some who go to college because they have no other option, they are forced by their parents. I also know some people feel that college is their only option to have a successful life. I don't believe that is the only way to be successful, but I hear people talk about people who did not go to college, they're looked down upon. Does going to college really define your whole future? I do not think that college is for everyone. People attend college do not do well and it is time and money wasted. I would like to discuss personal stories and/or stories of people we know who have struggled. Does college determine whether you will be successful or not? Why did the students in my class decided to attend college? Was it always an option? It is a topic I am interested in because there are students I started with here at Buffalo State and many of them dropped out or are flunking in many of their courses? I would also like to discuss reasons for their failure and why they are not succeeding. There's much to discuss and learn about our peers and the importance of college or lack of importance to others. I think everyone is built for something, and school is not for everyone. I would like to know my peers opinions on the matter. Also, I would like to discuss whether or not people should have to attend college to have a decent life.

This year’s election has had more young adults and children interested than any other election. There are numerous topics and issues that are important to discuss this year such as Isis, taxes, income and wage, and funding. It is truly sad that I think the one I need to discuss today is Ethics. If you do not know the definition of Ethics that is pretty sad but here, you go: morals or principles that govern ones’ behavior. You’re welcome.  

Hillary Clinton is running against Donald Trump and I cannot phantom how he has a single person voting for him. When it comes to ethics and what is or is not ethical, Trump does not know a damn thing. Hillary Clinton is not perfect, nor is anyone in this world but at least she has morals and acceptable behavior. Trump is truly a disgusting being who has the worst morals if any.  Throughout the campaigning and this entire election Trump has continued to be disrespectful, sexist, discriminator, immature, condescending, and the list goes on and on. He should not be in the primaries running to be the President OF the United States!!! How can people vote for this man? Being President is not a joke, it is a serious job, where he will control the lives of the people closest to us.  

Donald Trump has said terrible things about Mexicans and saying we were going to build a wall to block the Mexicans from getting over the boarded but also implying the Mexicans were going to build the wall. He is outrageous and out right disrespectful to a neighboring country.  He has also called Mexicans: murders, criminals, and drug dealers. I am guessing Trump was never taught not to be stereotypical. He is egotistic and has absolutely no respect for woman. He once said on television he loves having children and he would support them with money but would not raise them and change diapers. A clip of him saying to just grab woman by the “pussy”, and then said it was just locker talk. As if that is less insulting. Woman are trying to have men accountable for their assaults and Trump is promoting assault.  

I could rant on for days as to why this man is unfit to be President, he’s a disgrace and it is so sad that this man is even an option. Other countries around the world must really be shocked, that AMERICANS have been voting for this vile man. For him to have made it this far, it shows a lot about the American people. America is built off of immigrants and people of all cultures and Trump is trying to diminish that. Be ashamed of yourself if you have voted for this man, we are trying to improve life, not go backwards.  

Vote Hillary Clinton because at least she isn’t promoting assault. She is not selfish. She takes the job of president serious. She is not racist. She is not sexist. SHE BELIEVES IN EQUALITY! If you vote Trump you legit suck, just so you know :) JERK!

Blog #3

I love when Autumn approaches. That means Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas is coming soon. Out of all three of those holidays my favorite one is definitely Thanksgiving. It had always been my favorite holiday since I was younger. I love it so much because of the food and the time you get to spend with your family. The atmosphere is so welcoming, there is nothing but laughs and jokes. I really started to appreciate Thanksgiving once I came to college. Here in Buffalo there is not much of a variety of food. Being from the city I am so use to being able to get food at anytime so it was difficult adjusting to that.

When I went home last year for Thanksgiving I put in so many request for different types of food. My family is very mixed so we do not have the usual turkey with gravy, we make pork, mac and cheese, rice with olives, ham, bake chicken, fried chicken, candy yams, collard greens, ribs, and my favorite banana pudding. My aunt, my mother, and my grandmother start to cook majority of the food the night before because it is too much to cook in one day. Previous years Thanksgiving would be at my grandmother’s house but last year it was at my uncle’s house.

Most of my friends are from the Caribbean so they do not celebrate Thanksgiving. My mother always tells me to invite them because there is always way too much food. Our typical Thanksgiving morning would start off with someone making a big breakfast so that we are full enough until dinner time. Usually it is between me and my youngest aunt and we play rock paper scissors to see who has to wake up early to make breakfast. Last year they cut me some slack because I had just came back from college. My grandmother made the best breakfast of all times she make grits with cheese, bacon, turkey sausage, biscuits, cheddar scrambled eggs ( I hate eggs), and pancakes with strawberries and bananas. I felt like I had a five star breakfast compared to Buffalo State’s food.

At the dinner table is one of the best times too. We sit by the tv, not at a dinner table, and we watch whatever football game that is on. During the commercials we would have random conversations about where the next family vacation, and the famous family question they love to ask “how’s school?” then somehow I will have to change the topic because then it would lead to asking if I have a boyfriend. Around 10/11pm we start leave because we do black Friday shopping and we have to start early. I cannot lie I am super excited about thanksgiving this year, I can taste the food already.

Gosh Thanksgiving is so amazing and I too love it! I think this is the first year i won't be looking forward to it because I became a vegetarian and I know I will be so unhappy not digging into the turkey and roasted chicken. There are other dishes without meat that I love but meat is tradition. All the food your family makes sounds so delicious, my mouth literally began to water. Food is my addiction. I can understand your excitement for Thanksgiving, Buffalo State’s food is probably the most disgusting thing I have ever tasted. I love that your family has a huge breakfast before dinner, my mom is the only one who does the cooking and makes us fend for ourselves in the morning. Enjoy Thanksgiving this year!

REVENGE GONE WRONG

I have three brothers, when we were kids we used to travel to our grand Mothers house and stay with her for holidays. This particular time I was around 10 years old. two of my brothers came with me, and we were accompanied by my grandmother (who incidentally was in her 60’s at the time)

Anyway, one of the days we were going to the beach. she lived in Miami florida so i was planning on enjoying a good day on the beach.we get there and it is burning hot. I could remember walking on the hot sad and feeling like I’m stepping on the sun of some sort. when i was younger i was not a big fan of swimming especially when it came to oceans. I just wanted to play in the sand and play with water guns of some sort. my Grandmother is under the shade and tells my brothers to take care of me. So they start playing in the water and I’m just standing there afraid of all the water. My oldest brother just comes up from behind and puts me in the water. my other brother follows along and now I’m crying and they begin laughing in my face and making fun of me. the salt was getting all in my face and made me cry even more.

That night when we got home I carefully emptied the sugar bowl into the trash and refilled it with table salt, and waited.The next morning we all got up for breakfast and my grand mother asked us what we wanted. I wanted cooked breakfast, and the others wanted cereal. My plan was working perfectly. She put the cereal in the bowls, filled the bowls up with milk and sprinkled sugar (or so she thought) over the breakfast cereal. It was going to be perfect.

Then things started to go wrong. She then boiled the kettle and started to make a cup of tea…..with 2 sugars

Before either of my brothers could eat a spoonful, she drank a great big glug of the tea (salted). Her face screwed up like when u give a baby some crybaby candy to suck on.

Things didn’t really go down to well after that.

She is now in her late 80’s, and when I see her these days, she can still remember that cup of tea - so can I

I cannot remember the last time i have laughed out loud while reading something. Did you get into trouble for doing that? Your brothers totally deserved to get pranked it sucks that your grandmother got effected by the prank. This story reminds me of when my elder sister and i mixed a whole bunch of seasonings, water, and juice and told my younger sister it was medicine. We lied and said our mom left it for her and she had to take it before mom got home. She ended up telling my mom she took her medicine which lead to lots of questions and a big punishment. At least you were just getting payback and not being a jerk. My older sister and I terrorized my little sister way too much. Did your brothers ever take a bite of their cereal?

How I broke my collarbone

Yeah, you read that right! I have broken my collarbone! You know how people just have “little accidents” that causes them to get badly injured? Wellllll, mines is a different story. And by different, I mean completely ridiculous.

So, It was my sophomore year of high school and I was playing for my school’s basketball team, The Emerson Eagles. We were…eh…a pretty good team and won a couple a games here and there but that’s besides the point. It was the end of the season, probably the third to last game and we were against this…should I say…“hardass swol beefy” team. This team was very aggressive and to be honest, I was scared shitless. Seriously. If you compare myself to them…then I would be considered as a baby.

Back to the story, I was playing guard in this game and the score was really close. It was…about the third quarter of the game and we were all equally exhausted by now. I suddenly had the ball and was running to the other side of the court to make this amazing basket. That is until this girl from the other team trip me. I never hit the ground head first so hard in my life. I can barely remember what happened a little afterwards but I do know that I was COMPLETELY OUT.

….it turns out I had a “minor concussion” and that I was out of the team for the rest of the season.

Fast forward to July 4th later that year, I was better. The bump on the side of my head when down and the sun was shining. Me and my family decided to go to the park for the holiday, which was fine at the time. I haven’t been on a swing in a while so why not.

I never fucking jinxed something so bad in my life guys.

SO, Yeah. I got on the swing and did my thing. I was always a high swinger cause I love the feeling of wind flowing through my hair. I know. Sounds cliche but it’s the truth.

There was this big tree near the swing set and the kids were climbing and throwing crabapples everywhere. If you don’t know what a crabapple is, look it up. Anyways, these kids are bad. They didn’t care. And I remember this boy, he was at the top of the tree, thinking that he was Lion King or something like that. I remember staring at him because I thought he was going to fall. I remember him looking at me dead in the eye as he threw that crabapple…

Right where I had my injury at.

I swear I have injured myself too many times, my family thinks I have the worst of luck. Most of my injuries were because I was doing something incredible stupid. Yours however, were just unfortunate accidents which suck. I am so happy I have never broken my collarbone, I have heard its incredibly painful. I broke my sprained my wrist jumping from my porch, I cracked my head open doing back flips on my bed from my sisters bed. Your story made me laugh, though I'm not sure if thats inappropriate lol. Did you have any other bizarre injuries growing up?

When in doubt rock it out

My name is mikala-lyn. Yes that’s how you spell it. Don’t get it wrong. Its not Michaele or mikayla. I am strong headed and give no fucks. I might come off as a bitch but I’m far from it. I have the biggest heart. I love my family and friends. I have a twin brother.  His name is Mathew, we are very close. Moving on, let me tell you a story. So can you remember running around with your friends when you were about six or so? Running in the backyards of your house and your friend’s house, and as the sun hitting your face. Playing  baseball, football, softball, and even making games up.  I can remember that day like it was yesterday. Mat and I were trying to find something to do on this hot Summers day. My mom was at work and my big sister was “watching” us. As we all were running around trying to find something to do for the day. Mat had a great idea to play another game of baseball. As we looked around we both have lost the three baseballs that my mom have given us about a week ago. So I said “Why don’t we just play with a big rock?”  so we went to find the biggest rock to play with. Mat found it the rock. Another thing I might want to add, we were playing in the middle of the road. Now that I look back on it, that wasn’t a good idea. But anyways,  we made the field and the base lines too. He told me that I could bat first. So as I got to the Homeplate I told he “Watch out I might hit you with the rock”. Well he pitched the first one, I missed. So I took a deep breath and he pitched the second rock. I kept my eye on it and leaned my weight back  to one side and crack I hit the rock! I started to run when I heard Mat started to cry. I turned and yup you guessed it, I hit him right in the face with the rock. I ran over there and see what I actually did to him. The rock just stabbed him in little in the forehead but I wanted to make sure that he was okay. So I called 911 and my mom. Within 20 minutes they both where there.  the three of them went the hospital and got ten stitches, nothing major happened to his face. All in all please do not play rock baseball.

This was fun to read. You have a great sense of humor and I really enjoyed reading this story. It is nice to know my siblings and I are not the only ones who would play dangerous games. My sister’s and I use to do the stupidest things and get into so much trouble. Your story reminds of my time in Maine, I was living in the country-side and we would do things like this all the time. Living in the outskirts a city could get really boring and so we would do such mischievous things and get so creative with our games. I would love to read more of your stories.
