I have a thing to say!!!

So a new debate's sparked up regarding Chiaki's decision to give herself up to the Mikaboshi family, whether or not that decision was based in logic or emotion. There's a lot of contributing factors that go into this decision, and it's purposefully very muddy, but ultimately I believe that her decision was very emotional in nature, while being deceptively logical.

Chiaki is *stressed*. She was grieving the loss of the previous Soga princess, who everyone acknowledged as the pinnacle of Japan's order, was suddenly given the ability to see future disasters, and was swept away from her life as a normal girl who could spend time with her friends. Day after day, she would wake up from her visions, be dressed up to stand in front of a crowd of dignified people, and recount her interpretations of these dreams. She was expected to never interact with her more "lowly" friends ever again, because the Sogas had a status to maintain, and instead her womb would be given to a powerful man- a stranger. Even her own brother was caught up in the idolization of the Princess Soga over the acknowledgement of Chiaki. And during all that time, her heart broke. She desperately wanted to return to a time where things were better, when she wasn't burdened with all these expectations, but she had to hide herself away until her present self was virtually unrecognizable from her past self. She even makes note that her appearance was made to be reminiscent of the previous Soga princess, and she couldn't afford to be herself or else she would receive a prophecy of disaster. This was a burden all the Soga princesses carried, this is why we see them look so solemn when they're not interacting with anybody else. Internally, they all yearned for a chance of autonomy that they would never get until the day they provide an heir for the ability.

Chiaki's decision is very much a form of suicide, and it is explicitly detailed to be a matter of her no longer valuing herself. Because for all the gold she was plated with, she gradually wore away on the inside until she felt like nothing but a husk. She lost the warmth of Kunishige, of the carefree days where she was able to be Chiaki. All that's left of her is Princess Soga, and there's no meaning in such an existence. So she's adamant in the first major display of autonomy she exhibits being an act that destroys herself in body and soul.

When people say Chiaki's decision was a logical one, they reference her own words that it's something that will keep everyone safe, that Japan is on the brink of an invasion against a powerful enemy without proper countermeasures. But let me ask, does Chiaki actually consider her options? She makes her decision the second after she receives a vision of her friends and close affiliates being hurt, she barely gives herself time to process it before trying to prevent the harm from reaching Kunishige, which as she said before was a motivating factor keeping her in the position to be receiving these prophecies at all. And in the first place, the basis from which Chiaki is getting her logic is also flawed. Why is the Soga clan's order so fragile as to be able to tip so dramatically towards disaster just because Chiaki sends letters to a boy she likes? Why are the Sogas full of so much pride that their branch bureau wouldn't recognize the capability of someone who could potentially give them a counterweapon over the usage of an infant who commands a similarly powerful weapon who will only be born in a year? So much pride that they'd willingly let their best source of prophecies be given to the enemy just because they wanted to return power to the main family? Ultimately, the Sogas are motivated by power, power and more power, this is why the insistence that Chiaki's decision is sound in logic, even if it's not motivated by logic, doesn't work. The entire system built around Chiaki martyring herself for the main family is inherently broken. Chiaki was born into this system and never learned to criticize it. So she'd rather kill herself within the logic of that system than try to run away.

things humans are known to do when stressed:

-hallucinate

-cry over what seems to be small things

-become furiously angry over what seems to be small things

-hit a self destruct button over and over again

-lose all sense of reality

-becoming straight up unable to communicate

-view every situation as life or death

-experience delusions/become vulnerable to irrational worldviews

-perceive hostility where none exists

-become extremely nauseous and/or throw up

-stop engaging in sleeping/eating/basic hygiene

-stop processing sensory input

-process way too much sensory input all at once

-lash out at others/themselves

-and more!

being able to recognize when a human (ie. you or another person) is so stressed out they cannot think clearly is VERY important for conflict resolution and diffusing emotional crisis. highly recommend trying to train yourself at being able to recognize that state of panic- there is a point in which logic and rationality is useless and you have to address the underlying emotional issue first. knowing that saves everyone a lot of pain and struggle.

ospreys only eat fish, that's why they don't register this starling as possible food

the starling got home safely

the starling was not trying to eat the eggs, it was mostly curious and you can see it trying to hop under the osprey every time the osprey tries to sit down again--this is because the starling is still a baby and has the instinct to get under an adult for warmth, even though it mostly has its feathers. this scares the osprey because that is a Foreign Creature near its eggs.

at the end of the video you can see the ospreys starting to turn the eggs. birds do this so the yolk and/or embryo don't stick to the shell of the egg, which is bad for the egg's health.

ospreys have eyes adapted to seeing beneath the surface of the water!

unless you want to teach small kids about a laundry list of sex acts, they're not going to even recognise many acts of CSA as sexual in nature. instead, we need to have children who are raised with an expectation of bodily autonomy and who feel comfortable complaining when they're made or asked to do things they don't feel comfortable with. we need children to have the expectation that those complaints will be taken seriously and that they'll receive backup to make sure situations like that don't continue. if their desires for bodily autonomy are consistently ignored, how can we expect them to speak out when something confusing and uncomfortable happens with their parent, cousin, or babysitter? we've already taught them that what they feel comfortable with doesn't matter
