Edd had definitely said something just then. Jaxer was sure of it. For a moment, he considered asking her to repeat herself, but then decided against it. It had probably been something deeply hurtful, anyway.
He watched as Edd cycled through the tools on her arm. It would be useful, he conceded, to have immediate access to repair tools in the event of an emergency. But then again, tool belts were also a thing that existed for that purpose. And you didn’t have to either discard or hollow out an incredibly expensive and sophisticated piece of tech to use it.
“Yeah, I never really bought that idea,” Jaxer said. “Cybernetics are cybernetics. If I wanted to make some sort of personal statement, I’d buy a shirt with a cartoon character on it. Besides, I usually use my hand as… well, a hand. This one -” he wiggled his fingers at her “- is perfect for flying the ship. I’m not sure what I could possibly add to my leg, and no offence, but I’m really not a fan of the idea of having someone poke around in my synthetic organs. I need them to live.”
“And I’d hold off on making modifications to any Apex cyberware, if I were you,” he said, uneasily. “Chryan megacorps tend to favour more… explosive solutions for protecting their intellectual property.”
“…Why are you so intent on me getting modded?” he asked. “There’s like a dozen other people on this ship with absolutely no tech at all.”
“ ‘Cybernetics are cybernetics’ “ Edd gasped in mock horror as she quoted the pilot. “That’s like me saying all ships are the same and just get you from point a to b.”
She may not know or appreciate ships, but she knew well enough that wasn’t the case. That meant Jaxer, a man with his own passions, should know better as well.
The questions caused Edd to pause, wondering what a sufficient answer would be. At this point she asked Jaxer to let her spruce him up more out of habit than anything. She would be surprised (and delighted) if he ever took her up on it, but she wasn’t going to hold her breath. Instead she’d just keep a design folder just for him on her datapad in case inspiration hit.
“Getting someone without any mods to get their first one is like trying to get into a virgin’s pants. Don’t get me wrong I still go for it and I’ve got a few parts just in case ready in the med bay but I have a feeling it’s going to take an accident for any of those to see use.” And others didn’t seem to like it when you were hoping for an accident just so you could install cybernetics into them, so she’d learned to keep that part to herself.
