Wrapper tying ceremony of Opobo, featuring the two daughters of the Amanyanabo (king) of Opobo. The wrapper tying ceremony is a female rite of passage in the town of Opobo in the delta regions of south eastern Nigeria.

This ceremony also takes place in Bonny, Okrika and parts of Andoni. It’s a very beautiful and elaborate affair. The finest George wrappers and coral beads will be brought. Maybe when next I visit my Dad’s village, I will document one of them. 

I plan on documenting Nwaotam in Opobo and Andoni areas too. If you don’t know what Nwaotam is, it’s a boat/water/regatta festival. See here.

There are a lot of cultural festivals and events in these parts of Nigeria, and I feel that outside of people there, most Nigerians know next to nothing about it!
