“He’s not autistic...”
“He’s just a slow learner.”
“They’re not autistic...”
“Holy fuck, why can’t you just let nice things exist without projecting into them so hard. Maybe the devs were just looking for ways to build a game that reflects the mechanics they wanted. The weird introductions and lack of small talk is just because when the franchise started there wasn’t room on the cartridges for more dialogue. The infodumps from the NPCs are just meant to quickly introduce you to the game mechanics and world. Turn based battling is just the way the game was balanced. And the whole yes/no thing and the battle scripts is just [slur redacted], it doesn’t make them nonverbal.”
“And of course, just because the creator of something has autism doesn’t mean any of their characters do. Some people come up with normal shit, unlike you who has to make everything about you.”
“He’s not autistic...”
“Autism can be a huge struggle. I have a cousin with autism and headcanons about having autism shouldn’t be a source of entertainment.”
That awkward moment where I’m not sure if the reason a rant looks familiar is because I’ve already posted it or if it’s merely because some of these arguments are just that repetitive.
“They’re not autistic...”
“It just kills me whenever someone uses autistic + their fave character or smth. IT’S NOT A JOKE, IT’S NOT FUNNY, HAVE SOME FUCKING RESPECT. and for ppl who say ‘hey you’re putting that term in a negative way’ EXCUSE ME FOR WANTING TO KEEP IT AS HEALTHY”
“They’re not autistic...”
“She’s just anxious and over-protective, and as for him, he JUST DOESN’T HAVE FRIENDS. Unless the author states they have autism, don’t assume they have fucking autism. Your headcanons are NOT CANON. Seriously, calm the fuck down.”
Go to a post about positive representation, like that one I just reblogged about Symmetra being autistic. Look at the reblog comments. Ignore the trolls and complainers for a second, which won’t be too hard because they’re outnumbered by the good. Read the cheering of hundreds of happy, excited people.
Ultimately, that’s what it’s about. A little bit of unusual characterisation makes people enjoy something that much more. A bunch of people made happy by seeing something they identify with or appreciate. It’s not a complicated concept.
“They’re not autistic....”
“Anyone who headcanons someone like that is very messed up.”
“He’s not autistic...”
“WTF, I’m pretty sure he’s just shy.”
“They’re not autistic...”
“What is it with neuroatypical people feeling the need to diagnose characters with disorders that they hardly have symptoms at all of? Why do I keep seeing and hearing about autism headcanons for characters who definitely aren’t autistic? It’s kind of obnoxious.”
“She’s not autistic...”
“She’s an alien! Technically she has no mind to disable in that kind of fashion.”
“She’s not autistic...”
“What the fuck is this logic? Is there no such thing anymore as nervous energy? I used to flap my hands as a kid when I was angry or anxious, are you saying I’m autistic?”
“He’s not autistic...”
“If he has such terrible social skills, how does he find it so easy to speak to his bosses or run for student council? He has no issue when it comes to public speaking! And he’s not just really skilled in one area, he has other skills too. As for infodumping about his interests, doesn’t everyone?
And there you have it. But everything is considered a mental illness now, isn’t it?”
“They’re not autistic...”
“You’re projecting like hardcore.”
“She’s not autistic...”
“SERIOUSLY?!? She’s ADHD if she’s anything. I really hate autistic headcanons. I’ve never seen one that makes any sense, and they all come off as fetishizing of something I hate about myself.”
“He’s not autistic...”
“IF HE WAS AUTISTIC HE WOULD USE THAT AS A FUCKING EXCUSE ALL THE TIME!!!! STOP IT!! he’s socially inept because he chooses to be!”
“They’re not autistic...”
“He isn’t canonically autistic, and neither is she. She’s allowed to be distant without being autistic. He’s allowed to be carefree and childish without being autistic. I have no problem with that being your headcanon but it’s a problem when you force your OPINION down people’s throats and scream they’re a bigot if they don’t agree.
I am NOT against people who have autism and want representation; I’ve seen how it affects people and I care a lot about representation in a positive light. Seeing people say ‘oh this character is different there must be something WRONG with them let’s BLAME it on a DISORDER THAT SHOULDN’T BE USED NEGATIVELY BECAUSE MANY PEOPLE WITH AUTISM ARE GENIUSES’ just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.”
so when we try to be positive, we’re told we can only ever be negative
when we admit negativity, we’re told we have to be positive
i hate neurotypicals
“I care about positive representation! But you have to sit back and wait for someone to explicitly create some for you. Don’t you dare ever find it in existing media.”
EDIT: Okay, I got taken. The OP is a satire blog, not the hate blog I took them for. My apologies. Sadly, the above is… completely plausible for a NT to say about autistic interpretations.
Strictly speaking , I think that ‘satire’ would technically require these to be invented or exaggerated, rather than just lightly paraphrased in order to obscure the characters and participants. My only real embellishments are the commentary in the tags.
So, unfortunately, the reason why it sounds like such a plausible thing for an allistic/NT person to say...? That would be because someone actually said it.
