Genuine Question
Going off the Wendigo drama, is it alright for people outside of the culture to use Wendigos if done properly and respectfully? I’ve always been a fan of Wendigos (emaciated humanesque cannibals keeping in mind hunger and greed, not really into the deer looking monsters or antler creatures like in Hannibal).
I’m asking because I don’t want to upset anyone if I draw them considering I’m not part of a tribe, but would it be acceptable if I’m able to research well and portray them in a way that is based on native accounts?
Apologies if this comes across as ignorant, I just genuinely want to know.
I’m wondering this as well. I would like to be able to draw from diverse sources, but from what some people are saying, it may not actually be possible to do so properly and respectfully (?). (If I’m understanding right about Native culture being “closed”?)
Some are saying it’s okay, though, which has led to me being very very confused. It seems like it’s hard to get a cut-and-dried answer because the topic is so complex, which is why so many people are debating it.
Before all of this, I would have said, “Go for it!” and I would have felt free to do the same, but now, I’m not so sure. ^ ^;
