i like talking about the series (1-3; haven't watched 4 to preserve my sanity), implied/referenced scenes, the books, and complaining generally about love triangles. huge advocate for giving each character their due and figuring out where in-character ends and ooc begins

[as for who- i'm a casual nuwho viewer (watched mostly 9 and 13) so if i get something wrong about the canon apologies in advance. i'm also an american and raised by a hong konger so that's why my grasp of the english language is a bit weird]

shots from the "fiancé finding out" scene in torchwood s2e4 meat is intriguing because in it:

1. Tosh is clearly trying to see what Owen's feels are about dating a member of the team

the camera only cuts to Owen for brief moments, just as long as he speaks, while it lingers on Tosh after he softly rejects the idea of dating a member of Torchwood. it reflects how much they show to care about the topic

2. Jack and Ianto are in a kind of relationship and right now it's on the dl

the majority of the screentime is taken up by Jack staring at Ianto from across the room. relationship-wise, they have much more going on between them at the moment than Tosh and Owen do

doubly it shows how well they know each other. Ianto is fully aware of Jack watching him, and smiles after Tosh claims that they're all single. Jack's attention is interesting because it touches on his character's troubles with relationships and his anger at Gwen for telling Rhys. for both of these reasons he's looking at Ianto while thinking, and Ianto knows this

while Tosh and Owen have a failed explicit dialogue, Jack and Ianto have a purely subtextual exchange with no words between them. fascinating scene to show contrast of the two pairs

from this one scene we reveal one aspect of each character in the present:

- Tosh is interested in a relationship with Owen and is not easily dissuaded

- Owen claims that relationships are not worth the work and that he's better off without one, which is a change from his constant on again off again dating in season one

- Jack is possessive over Ianto however does not express this in a way that anyone but he would notice

- Ianto is not in a rush to tell the others about his and Jack's relationship

the vast majority of the episode is dedicated to Rhys and Gwen's relationship so it's interesting how others respond to the topic.

In The Moment by JB Harris on ao3 is genuinely one of my favorite works that deals with Jack and Ianto's relationship after the events of Meat and how it interacts with the dynamic of the team. a good time :)

everyday i wake up, i think about jack saying “i take it all back, all right? but not him” and i boil my eyes out

jack had many lovers and i’ m sure every single one of them was special and shaped jack’ s life a little but i believe that ianto, despite the little time they had, was and always will be that one the left the biggest mark on jack; he was ready to retreat if it meant to save ianto, he was willing to lose if it meant having ianto still by his side.

mr. dashing hero, captain difficult choices who's ready to protect earth if it means grisly actions on his end. that man was ready to run away if it meant Ianto could be with him.

all of a sudden, the roof-gazing, lone wolf always ready to sacrifice for the benefit of others, draws a hard line in the sand for who and what he's willing to give up: do not take this man away from me.

"not him" and the implied "I need him". we so rarely see Jack think in small scale. every episode the fate of the world always hangs in the balance and he's trying to save it. but here, he refuses to think about the consequences of trying to save Ianto because if he's not there, what does the world matter?

a part of it was also that Jack had been putting off formalizing their relationship, so he knew that he wasn't just letting go of Ianto the man, he was losing an entire future for the two of them, a promise of years of love and companionship. there would be no greater loss to Jack than losing Ianto, which is why he was willing to do what he did by the end of coe. his heart was already shattered, why not stomp on the shards? it's not like he could hurt any more than he already is.

and after all that time of learning to care about the individual, of remembering how to refuse to not save everyone, the world tells him there was no point. it would be a tragedy anyways (which is my main gripe with coe tbh, that they completely undid that part of Jack's character development where he learns to care about small scale issues and becomes more human)

everything changes might seem unrealistic at first but after two seasons we come to learn that Owen Harper really is a guy who would order his pizza with the name of his secret alien government job

book that says MEAT is impeccably placed as always. fuck I low how well-lived in the set is for their apartment. god directing and props did an A+++ job especially on this episode
