Hawk had always taken pride in his ability to sneak up on the unsuspected, but he was now asking himself if he potentially had lost a step or two. ‘Better our leader then anyone else I guess,’ he thought as the only upside to being so easily spotted.

The feeling of being at ease out in the wild, away from the constant circus that was the Tree, was one that Hawk constantly sought. It was a calming feeling knowing he was nott the only one that longed for it.

“Says the one laying around with his back exposed, just asking for a barrage of arrows shot at him,” he smirked while coming to rest next to his leader.

At first Slightly grimaced at the sound of the person coming closer, though upon looking up and catching sight of Hawk, it all but disappeared. There were few Lost Boys whose company would be welcome to interrupt Slightly’s thought, but Hawk was one of them.

Loyalty was important to the Lost Boys’ leader. And Hawk seemed to display exactly that.

“Don’t be silly. I’m not scared of arrows, Hawk. Not when you’re the only one on this island good enough to catch me with one.” He grinned, as if there weren’t plenty Lost Girls and Natives who were more than capable with a bow and arrow. None of them as much as Hawk, at least not as far as Slightly was concerned, but still.

Bandit wandered too much alone and that only bothered the ones that didn’t trust the girl enough when she says she’s faster than most. Some may say she’s a bit careless and too reckless and others would say it’s bravery at its finest. Her noticing movement that could only be a human or large animal in the trees and deciding to play tricks was maybe all of those things. 

Quickly she drew her hood up and turned the other way. She was curious as to who was up there and would love a conversation or something along the lines. So she carefully broke some branches as she walked away and stopped with a smirk as she heard the voice. She didn’t completely recognize it, but it was definitely a boy. “And you’d say you are?” She called to the unknown. 

“I didn’t.” He said smugly, as he caught sight of a Lost Girl. This was going to be fun. Lazily, though with a definite ease, Slightly pulled his tall frame up and swung himself back down to the ground. This girl. He recognised her. Dawn’s Second. The one with Nibs’ target on her back.

“The name’s Slightly.” He said, facing his new-found company and crossing his arms as he looked her up and down. “Perhaps you’ve heard of me?” A devilish smirk came across his face as he got a better look at what was under her hood. Definitely the one Dawn called - what was it? Thief, robber, bandit - yes, that was it. Bandit. At least, that was he he assumed he was speaking to. Slightly made it his business to know as much about his enemy as he could, and that included knowing as much about the soldiers in Dawn’s ranks as possible. “And you are?”

They had both changed, they had all changed, and while some of the changes were more obvious, some were infinitely more subtle. The slight upturn of Slightly’s lip that had once been a bit more sincere, the way he held himself, not quite like Peter, but almost as if mocking and admiring him at the same time. Then again, she was no different, with her hair braided in a different pattern and her eyes a tad sharper than they’d been before. Each with their own secrets and their own scars. 

He was watching her, of that she was very aware, and not entirely sure what to make of it. But then, she was watching him, too. “I doubt either of us has taken the time to watch the birds in years, when they dare fly this low.” She ignored–and rightly so, given her own neutrality in the matter–the comment about a Lost Girl. Best not to tempt that demon for now. “You’re hardly a child, yourself, Slightly.” Tiger Lily said coolly. 

Slightly laughed. He knew he wasn’t slight anymore, he hadn’t been the small, quiet child he’d stayed as for so long for a while now. Since Peter had left, the child had become a man, at least on the outside. He stood tall, very tall, and the lips that had hardly ever uttered a word had grown far more used to parting to make way for his voice, now louder and more self-important than ever. 

“Only on the outside, Tiger, don’t worry.” He quipped, the comment hitting home a little too much. He didn’t like being bigger, he didn’t like he fact that he, and his Lost Boys, and his island were ageing without Peter. Him and Tiger Lily had played together as children, some of the best memories he had were of them and Peter before the other Boys had arrived, and then them with the first few that made up the original group. Look at them now though, he thought, bigger than ever and with the weight of an island on their shoulders.

Tiger Lily knew well what it was to escape your own people, to get away from the noise and the responsibility and the never-ending pressure that seemed to bear down on those who took hold of their birthrights in this land. As well as she knew that, Tiger Lily was also familiar with the tone of Slightly’s voice, proud as it was. 

A laugh that was once like bells fell broken from her lips. “If I meant to surprise you, Lost Boy, I would have.” Perching lightly on a branch just out of the Lost Boy’s reach, she cocked her head to the side and gave him a mildly softer look. Tiger hadn’t been precisely friendly towards more than a select few people in many moons, but the Boys weren’t enemies, and even Slightly–arrogant as he might have been–fit that bill. “Are you hiding from anything in particular, or just responsibility?” 

Slightly knew that laugh. It had been different once. Like a bell, ringing clear over the noise of Pan’s pipes or the dancing feet of the Lost Boys around a fire. Now it was a little less untainted, of course it was. Everything on the island had suffered, some things more than most, but for Slightly, and perhaps for Tiger Lily, they had more to lose when the Star swallowed Peter and that fucking Wendybird whole, never to be seen again. 

She stayed out of his reach - smart girl - but the look on her face told him she didn’t see him as an enemy. “Who said I was hiding?” Slightly asked, his ever present smirk had pride of place at the corners of his lips. “Maybe I was just watching the birds? Or, even better, waiting for a stray Lost Girl to feast on.” He grinned with a malicious glint in his eye. “Long time no see, Tiger. You’re all grown up now, aren’t ya?”

A grimace spread across Nibs’ face as he lifted his pale eyes to meet those of his effervescent leader.  “And you’re not as good at evading others as you think…” his deep voice broke through the air, eyes narrowing at the other boy resting in the tree.  No, not resting… shirking his duty.  Nibs resisted the eyeroll threatening his impassive features as he calmly stood his ground beneath the tree Slightly occupied.

“You know some of the younger boys are looking for you, right?  They’re seeking some words of advice from our fearless leader,” sarcasm dripped heavily from the last two words as he grinned sardonically up at Slightly.  “…But it seems you’re… occupied?” Nibs continued, gesturing magisterially at the tree, lip curling in smug disapproval.

“Such little faith, you wound me, Nibsy.” Slightly mocked, lifting his chin in a very self-important gesture that he knew would get his second’s blood boiling. “If I hadn’t wanted to be found, you wouldn’t have found me.” He chuckled, a black, humourless sound devoid of the carefree childishness that it had carried... before. 

“If they want me they can come and find me.” Slightly shrugged, smirking down at Nibs and very much enjoying being above him in every way possible. “As you’ve already so expertly proven, it’s not particularly hard.” Slightly deftly climbed down from his perch so that he stood firm on the ground again. Once slight, now tall, the leader of the Lost Boys regarded his deputy with a smug little grin. “Is that why you came looking for me? As the younger boys’ messenger, or is there an important reason you’re interrupting my thoughts?”

Slightly was lazily perched in the lower boughs of a huge tree, swinging his limbs off the sides of it and staring into the canopy without any fear of falling. Lost Boys feared nothing, after all. He was sick and tired of the noise of Hangman’s Tree and had escaped to come here for a while to collect his thoughts. 

Hearing twigs snap in the undergrowth, the Lost Boy turned to glance at the ground for a moment, spotting someone who was making their way through the trees, making an effort to tread lightly, it seemed.

“You know.” Slightly called smugly, lethargically rolling onto his side to face the person. “You’re not half as sneaky as you think you are…”

You’re in Lost Boy Territory now, kid. You’re not going to leave. At least not alive.

The trees have eyes here, they say, trees that reach upwards and away from the creatures that lurk on the ground and in the lower branches where you won’t see until it’s too late.

They know this island better than they know themselves. They trust the shadows that hide them like friends, the thick forests are the only home they can remember. Their footprints have been marring the beauty of this island for aeons. 

Plucked by a twisted hand from all across time, they’ve seen things you’ve only read about. They won’t remember if you ask them though, and you won’t ask because they won’t give you time.

If the darkness doesn’t scare you, then the laughter will. These children aren’t really children anymore, but they’ll giggle as they chase you through the trees and screech when they catch you.

There’s no escape once they know you’ve arrived. No parent ever taught them any manners, they don’t know how else to greet you but with a game.

If you’re lucky, they might have time for hide and seek. If you’re lucky they’ll find you quick. These creatures are children after all, and they have very little room for patience amongst their bloodlust and their sadistic need to make you squirm.

Their leader laughs from the lower boughs of their tree, their Hangman’s Tree. An apt name, you can but imagine bodies swinging from it’s mangled, dying branches for crimes as innocent as resembling the dreaded Wendybird or uttering ‘Pan’ even a little too loud.

You’d best be hoping to be killed on the spot, better that than their grinning substitute for a king getting a hold of you. Nothing about him is slight anymore, a child in a body far too big for him, a boy who refuses to be a man. He has a million words waiting behind his lips, though the few he chooses to share will make your heartbeat quicken in fear.

He’ll tease out the way he ends you, or he’ll send you to his second, an equally twisted boy with hate in his eyes and terror behind his heart. They don’t agree on anything, but they’ll agree that your end will be exciting. For them, at least.

...Once there were six. Then five. Now there are more than you can run from. These boys are all lost. There is little hope of them being found. 

No one’ll find you either, if you don’t heed the warnings. Stay out of Lost Boy territory, avoid the three stumps that leave nowhere to hide, keep away from the fires they writhe around - you are no moth, and this light will do you no good.

There’s a reason his name is Slightly. Everything he does is done slightly. He smiles slightly, laughs slightly and is only slightly loved. People say that parents adore the second child rather than the first but this can’t be further than the truth for Slightly.

His parents doted on his older brother who was 8 years older than he was, while Slightly sat in the corner, peeking over his books. One night, Slightly’s father threw his favourite books into the open fire, yelling at Slightly to be more of a ‘man’ instead of a ‘stupid’ school boy. For Slightly’s father, being a man wasn’t about knowledge, it was about strength and power.

Slightly ran up to his room, gathered his few belongings and stormed out of the house. He looks back for a few seconds, only to see his brother staring at him with so much hurt and desperation in his eyes, that he forced himself to look forward and run away. Slightly spent two months on the streets, scraping the streets for food and stealing money. One night, he passed by his old house and the family looked happier than ever. They were chatting away, laughing as if without a care in the world. Slightly… loved? He wasn’t loved. That was when Peter took him away.

Slightly is reserved, skeptical but very opinionated. He’s always been a quiet boy, it’s part of his nature, but he secretly craves attention so he lies, exaggerates and speaks his opinion freely. He’s not as friendly as some of the others: if he speaks and you don’t listen, furious? is an understatement. In the early months after Peter abandoned them, Slightly was scared. Peter found him, provided him with the family he so wanted and the attention he so desperately craved. Now that he was gone, who would listen? Who would care? His past memories flood his mind and he’s driven mad. He kills without a second thought, self-proclaimed leader of the boys, the attention he finally deserves. When he does speak, his voice is such a deep, rough and alarming one that you are frozen into place (attention, attention) while he slightly twists your words around because it’s fun. Quiet isn’t always silent.

NIBS: Nibs has never been Slightly’s favourite. He smirks at him way too much and glares as if Slightly was the one that caused Peter to leave. Worst of all, he doesn’t listen. He rebuts everything Slightly says and refuses to do anything. They work best together against enemies, hence their positions in the group. But among themselves, you’d think that they were from different groups. Sometimes, Slightly wished Nibs would just leave.

DAWN: Dead. That is all Slightly wants of Dawn and all he has ever wanted of her. She reminds him too much of the stupid bird that just had to come and steal their leader away, a fool he was. Slightly will never make the same mistake with this one, and from the minute he laid eyes on the much too similar being, he has had an obsession with her blood on his hands.
