“Reed has never taken the high road. But he tells other people to ‘cause then there’s more room for him on the low road.”
disharmxny:
“oh come on, you’re not scared are you?”
“Me? Scared? I don’t think so little sister.” Reed laughed. “If I recall correctly, it was a certain little mermaid who used to hide behind her extremely brave big brother when Alto used to tell those stories about huge sharks roaming around on the reef. Some things don’t change, right?”
Not me, mate.
If only that was how it went.
Shallow Shores || Reed & Cilla
stubborncilla:
She’d been in worse scrapes, she’d dealt with Gideon for the first thirteen years of her life. She’d been fine in the castle, making wisecracks. She’d coped and adapted and done what she always has done. It was how she got through those post-castle years with her family. Being the smartass of the wererabbit triplets was the easiest way to deal with everything that had happened to them. But seeing the look on Reed’s face, knowing she didn’t have to deploy those tactics anymore it made her realize something. Today wasn’t about her. It wasn’t about how she felt. In fact, nothing was ever going to be about her again.
It was about them now, it was about him.
She gently squeezed his hand, trying to be reassuring. She’d put herself here, she’d placed them both in this situation. She couldn’t blame anyone else for what was going on. She had selfishly invited this into their home. He deserved better. “Thank you,” She said quietly, taking advantage of the intensity of the situation to craft her words in the following moments of silence as they escaped the guards’ ear. “I-I’m sorry I’ve been… I’m sorry I’ve been so,” Distracted? Busy? Awful? “Selfish.”
Reed had spent a long portion of his life being nothing but selfish. He had been his own priority for so long that he had thought he would always be that way, alone. It surprised him that he had made that shift from being so self-involved, to prioritising another person without question without even really noticing. Even the slightest chance that Cilla might be in trouble had him headed for his least favourite place in Wonderland without second thought. He knew that he would do anything for her, but then again, he’d known that for a long while now.
“You don’t have anything to apologise to me for, Cil.” Reed’s brow creased in disagreement. “Least of all selfishness. You’re the most selfless person I know.” The long hours she worked meant they didn’t see each other as much as either of them would have liked, but Reed could never hold that against her. Not when she was tirelessly working to give the people of Wonderland a voice. That was worth everything to him, and whatever danger came with that, Reed was ready to face head on by her side. “The only thing I care about is that you’re safe, and that you gave the King hell.”
Shallow Shores || Reed & Cilla
stubborncilla:
Heels gripped in one hand, Cilla stalked out of the palace as pridefully as a disheveled wererabbit could. After being Gideon’s unwitting guest for the evening, all she really wanted to do was go home and fall into bed. A nice nap would do her wonders. She’d take care of the oncoming shit storm and inevitable black eye when she woke up. However, Wonderland seemed to be having far too much fun causing her stress. The moment the palace doors swung open, a furious looking merman was there to greet her. It wasn’t that she was unhappy to see her husband, but causing a scene was the last thing the Shore family needed to do. And as much as she loved him, ‘causing a scene’ was Reed’s MO.
Would faking a smile help? Maybe she should repeat that ‘Giddy has a small dick’ joke that got her the busted lip in the first place. She went to make a wise crack, but the sarcasm died in her throat. It was replaced by the very real threat of her bursting into tears at the sight of him and the fear of the situation she just walked away from. “Can we please just go home?” She begged, reaching out for him.
When Cilla’s employees had told him what had happened to her, Reed had broken his rule about staying away from the palace and had gone after her. He didn’t trust the king even slightly, and knowing that he had the one person in Reed’s life he couldn’t lose behind his high walls stirred anger and terror within him. Though he was more than slightly in love with the fact that Cilla wasn’t scared of the effects of what she was publishing, it worried him that eventually those in power would grow sick of being criticised. As, it seemed, may have happened.
The guards hadn’t let him pass, and though he itched to make a scene, he knew that his beloved was more than capable of looking after herself. All he could do was wait with his heart in his throat for her to reappear. Reed only quit his agitated pacing when that familiar blonde head emerged from Gideon’s lair to rush to her in order to carry out his obligatory worried check over of her person. “Cil, I was so worried.” He said, pressing a rushed kiss to her temple. He knew his wife well enough to know that she was not in a good way - no wise crack, a fake smile, and that look that she got when she was holding back tears. If that he hurt her, I will finish what those assassin’s started, Reed thought, his fists clenching in pure rage at the thought of what might have gone on between the White Rabbit and the Crimson King. “Yeah love, let’s go home.” He nodded, taking her hand gently and shooting the guards a cold scowl. “Whatever you need.”

So if you guys had kids would they stay at home with you?
“I guess so, yeah. Unless they are born with the ability to write scathing political journalism and therefore can go to work with Cilla? Honestly, with her genes I probably wouldn’t be that surprised."
What would you say to Paige knowing what species killed her father?
“There’s nothing I could say to her that she’d want to hear? Besides, I think it’s fairly clear that the merpeople are more enemy to me now than kin - their actions are not my responsibility.”

“Cilla.” She repeated thoughtfully. That was the name of the person who had done Harmony’s job, protecting Reed, for the years she hadn’t been able to. Harmony should be undyingly grateful to this stranger that saved Reed, and she was, but there was a scrap of resentment as well, although she didn’t know whether it was toward knowing Reed had never needed her help all along or that she’d missed getting to tease him like any sister should as he fell in love. “That’s good, I’m happy for you. I want to be there, I do, I want to be there for you but with everything…” Harmony wondered if she’d ever be able to get away from the other mermaid’s for long enough without them getting suspicious. “I’ll try.”
“Yeah,” He replied quietly, unsure of what Harmony’s reaction would be. “She’s great. I can’t wait for you to meet her.” If he was in his sister’s place, he knew that he would be angry and hurt to have been left out of her life, but it wasn’t as if they’d had a choice in that matter the way things had turned out and he hoped Harmony could understand that. “Don’t put yourself in danger with the others, if it comes to that. But it would make me very happy. Thank you.” Part of him wanted to hide Harmony from the merpeople and convince her to stay on land, join the rebels that she would fit in so well with, and introduce her to the beauty of life here. But there was conflict brewing, and he couldn’t bear to influence his little sister in a way that could put her wellbeing on the line.
paigeofanewbook:
She was relieved to see he didn’t get upset by her attempt at a comforting gesture. It gave her a little hope that, despite it all, they could actually maybe get along well one day. That would be much easier than killing him off to have Cilla all to herself.
“Whoever it is, trust Jensen’s judgement. He wouldn’t leave us all in someone else’s hands unless he knew it was for the better. And either way, I’ve got your back. Ok? I nearly got killed by a certain person for the sake of one friend. Imagine what I’d do to keep Cilla happy.”
“I hope that’s the case.” Reed shrugged. “I’ll concede to the fact he was a good leader - honestly I don’t quite get why he’s quitting and causing us all all this extra stress, but he must have his reasons.” Sure, he rolled his eyes, and his words were punctuated by the resentment Reed was feeling for generally everything in his life right now, but he didn’t blame Jensen for this. Though he would have very much liked to have had somewhere to direct his resentment other than, well, everywhere, as usual.
“Cryptic, terrifying, very Paige-like.” Reed shrugged. “I imagine rather a lot. As would I - literally anything.” At least despite all the threats, it seemed that there was nothing standing between Cilla and happiness. The merman chuckled to himself, and shook his head at this whole situation.
disharmxny:
In a far away world where everything was different, Harmony might have been proud of Reed for starting a life of his own here and even be eager to meet the beginnings of his new family, no matter how much it stung, but Harmony wouldn’t let herself grieve for a life she would never have. “Okay.” Harmony nodding sharply, at a painful loss for additional words, somehow still too proud to tell him how much she loved him and missed him and how desperately she wished he could come home.
“Thank you, Har. Just stay out of trouble, okay? Lay low for a bit until you’re safe and you can go home when this is all over.” Reed knew his little sister well enough to know that him having a new family would hurt her, and this seemed as good a time as any to do something to try and remedy the gap that the years between them had created. “I was wondering something actually. I know it’s dangerous, and not the most logical idea, but there’s this girl - her name’s Cilla, and she basically saved me from myself, Harmony.” Reed caught himself gushing, and reigned it in a bit. “Anyway, I’m going to marry her. Real soon. And I want you to come, if you’d want to, to the wedding. You’re my family, and even after everything, it’s only right to me that you’re there.”
Reed’s coronation outfit - Reed did not think this through at all it was just vaguely the same colour as Cilla’s dress so he went with it.
