“Alright, see you guys tomorrow nice and early in the morning! Make sure you get a good rest tonight, and don’t even consider snoozing those alarms tomorrow morning!”
You watched as the Seijoh team dispersed with exhaustion spelled clearly on their faces. After giving them one last glance, you quickly went to the locker room to pack your things up. All you wanted to do was to get home, have a nice warm bath, and pack your remaining stuff for the weekend training camp in Tokyo. Today was very eventful for you, and you wanted to get off the school ground as soon as possible.
“Y/N,” you heard a familiar voice coming from the door that you had left ajar.
“Oh? Tooru-kun? You haven’t left yet?” you asked while shoving your jersey into your bag. “Are you here for late training again? I don’t think it’s a good idea, Tooru-kun. You do know we have to meet at 5am tomorrow, right? You better go home-,”
“Listen, Y/N,” Oikawa cut you off before you could finish your sentence. “U-um, you see, about before…”
“Ah, that? I told you to not worry about that, Tooru-kun. I know what your answer would be. I just wanted to let it out of my system, you know. I’m actually feeling a lot lighter now that I’ve let that out,” you instantly responded, hoping that Oikawa would drop the topic and leave.
The atmosphere became awkward for a good minute before Oikawa finally responded. “I’m so sorry, Y/N, it’s just that-,”
You let out a strained, unnatural laugh, not wanting him to finish what he was saying. “Hahaha, you don’t need to apologise for anything, Tooru-kun. I’m perfectly fine. You know I’m not some delusional and hopeless romantic who cannot accept the reality, right?” Flashing him a smile, you closed your locker door a bit too loudly. Pushing all of the sad thoughts aside, you walked towards him while slinging your backpack over one shoulder. “Let’s go, Tooru-kun. I need my beauty sleep,” you said, letting out a giggle.
The walk home was incredibly awkward with silence filling the air. You tried your best to distract yourself from thinking about what had happened today, but the very presence of Oikawa beside you was making it impossible.
Yes, you had confessed your feelings to the captain. Yes, you had liked him for over a year. But no, it certainly was not your idea.
“Alright, we’ll say bye here? My place is that way,” you said, ready to sprint off as soon as he said goodnight.
“I’ll walk you home. It’s dangerous at night, and-,”
“No, Tooru-kun, I’ll be fine. I’m a tough city girl from Tokyo, don’t forget that.” And you did sprint off after he said goodnight, leaving Oikawa behind with face full of confusion and regret.

The phone rang three times before a familiar loud, boisterous, and annoying voice picked up. “HEY HEY HEY, VILLAGE GIRL, HOW-,”
“BOKUTO KOUTAROU YOU DAMN PIG, WHY THE HELL DID YOU TELL ME TO CONFESS TO TOORU, YOU PIECE OF TRASH, I WAS–,”
Bokuto laughed his ass off, followed by Akaashi who was telling him to shut his mouth. “TELL US ALL ABOUT IT TOMORROW, Y/N. WE MISS YOU!”
You couldn’t help but smile at what he had said. You miss Tokyo, you miss Fukurodani High, but you miss their volleyball team the most. What a lively bunch, you thought to yourself, reminiscing the times you had spent with the Fukurodani volleyball boys. The company your father worked in had transferred him to the Miyagi team, and not wanting to leave you behind, you were forced to leave the life you had in Tokyo behind. Adjusting to your new school wasn’t that much of a trouble thanks to the Seijoh volleyball boys; you had met them on multiple practice matches. They were also the ones who persuaded you to become the manager of the team.
“Yeah, I miss you guys too. See you tomorrow, then? We’ll be there at 10-ish.”
After a nice and warm bath, you changed into your comfy pajamas and sighed in annoyance when you needed to set your alarm at 3:30am. Realising that it was already late, you quickly tucked yourself into bed with the memories from today still lingering in your head.
You were not sure exactly what time you fell asleep, but when the alarm blasted off in the morning you felt a constant loud banging in your head. You immediately knew that you didn’t get a decent sleep when you woke up feeling incredibly exhausted.
How could I get a decent sleep after what happened yesterday, you grumbled in annoyance while making your way to the bathroom.
The street lamps were still on and the road was empty you could hear the echoes of your own footsteps. The morning summer breeze was pleasant, the temperature just right for you to enjoy your stroll while munching on a meat bun for breakfast.
Taking a right turn to Seijoh’s school ground, you were surprised to see that none of the boys were late, with some even arriving earlier than scheduled.
“Morning lads! Wake your lazy asses up already. Is everybody here? Are we missing anyone?”
“L/N-san, how can you be so awake in this ungodly hour?” Kindaichi said while letting out a big yawn. “What’s that heavy bag you’re bringing, by the way? I’ll carry that for-,”
“I got it,” you felt a shoulder brush past you. “Good morning, Y/N,” Oikawa greeted you and took the heavy bag off your hand. With his slightly hoarse morning voice and that smile that had made you fall head over heels for him, you couldn’t stop the blush that was forming on your cheeks. “Morning, Tooru-kun! And by the way, those are snacks that my mum packed for us. There’s enough for everyone, hell, there’s even enough for breakfast in case anyone had missed it.”
The bus ride was peaceful and you oddly found it to be bizarre, considering that the rides with Fukurodani were always noisy thanks to a certain someone. Waking up at an absurd hour had taken a toll on everyone; Kunimi was leaning against the window, Kindaichi was trying not to let his head fall on Kunimi’s shoulder; Hanamaki and Matsukawa were asleep in a weird angle that you were scared they might break their necks. You let out a soft chuckle before looking to your left, only to meet Oikawa’s eyes that had been staring at your form from who knows when.
“Is there something on my face?” you asked groggily, shoving your hands into your backpack trying to find a mirror.
Oikawa couldn’t help but smile. “No, Y/N, you look fine. I’m just-,” he paused, a frown gradually making its way to his face. “Nah, nothing, don’t worry about it. Get some sleep, Y/N. I’ll wake you up when we get there.”
You winced at how formal Oikawa was around you. Hell, you were lucky he didn’t call you by your last name. Why did he get rid of his flirty nature with you? Why did he have to force a smile? Why did he look so disturbed by your presence?
Why do you hate me so much?
“Y/N…” you turned your head to the captain and realised that you had just said your thoughts out loud. “Y/N, I didn’t-,”
Vigorously shaking your head, you slightly turned your body so that you were fully facing him. “No, Tooru-kun, forget about what you just heard! I was just blabbering nonsense. Seriously, it was nothing. I guess waking up at 3:30am really knocked my brain out!” You let out a strained laugh, hoping that Oikawa would let the topic slide.
“Wake me up when we arrive!” you said before putting in your earphones, a subtle message to Oikawa to drop the conversation.
A light tap on your shoulder woke you up. “L/N-san, we’re here,” you heard Kindaichi’s soft voice. Fluttering your eyes open, you were greeted by Tokyo’s beaming sunlight and the familiar view of your former school. You smiled before looking to your left, where Oikawa’s seat was already empty.
“Where’s Tooru-kun?” you asked Kindaichi who had one foot already off the bus.
“Oh, he was the first one who got off! I think he’s already inside!”
So he didn’t even want to wake me up.
You sighed, fixing your dishevelled hair when a loud bang on the bus window caught you off guard.
“HEY HEY HEY!! VILLAGE GIRL!!” Bokuto shouted, face literally pressed to the window it might leave a mark.
“GODDAMN OWL, YOU’RE SO NOISY!” you quickly packed up your things before rushing to get off the bus.
“BO!!” you screamed while running to where your best friend was standing. You gave him the biggest hug, failing to realise a pair of irritated eyes that stared at you from the school’s main entrance.
“BO! HOW HAVE YOU BEEN?! WHERE’S—OH MY GOD AKAASHI!” you ran over to the setter, also giving him a big hug.
“It’s been a while, Y/N-san. You’re still as loud as ever,” Akaashi said with his ever so calm voice.
“Not even! Bo is a lot louder than me,” you replied, elbowing the ace lightly on his stomach.
“AKAASHI! I said hello to her first, so I speak to her first. Y/N, how’s living in the countryside?” Bokuto asked, clearly making fun of you.
“Bo, Miyagi isn’t that bad. Almost everything’s the same except for that goddamn delicious yakitori we always buy after school. Do you-,”
“Oh, you mean these?” A delicious smell invaded your nostril as Bokuto took out two sticks of your favourite snack.
“Oh-OH MY GOD. Bokuto-sama, would you mind giving me one stick, please?” you rubbed your two hands together in front of Bokuto’s face.
“After you tell me what happened yesterday with the Seijoh’s captain,” Bokuto whispered so that only you could hear.
Your eyes scanned the school ground for Oikawa, and when your eyes fell on a flock of girls near the entrance, you spotted Oikawa right in the middle of the group. His face was decorated with the widest smile and he was back with his cheerful and flirty nature. You know that he was just being friendly to his fangirls, but when he looked at your before tucking a girl’s hair behind her ear saying that she ‘looks prettier that way’, you immediately looked away, heart consumed by jealousy.
“Okay, I guess it didn’t go well?” You had forgotten about Bokuto next to you.
“Duh, obviously it didn’t go well. I’ll tell you about it tonight, Bo. Now give me that goddamn yakitori.” Snatching one stick from him, you spotted a familiar figure of a black-haired male walking through the main gate.
“KUROO!!” you screamed loudly, excited to see the Nekoma captain and his team. Locking eyes with Oikawa again, you decided to play along with his stupid jealousy game.
If this is what you want, captain, you’re messing with the wrong person.
Being the observant person that he was, Kuroo immediately saw right through everything and decided that he could help out a little bit. “HEY! PRINCESS! HOW ARE YOU?!”
Since when did he call you princess? You gave him a puzzled look but when you saw him blinking his eyes rapidly, you knew he was helping you win the stupid game against Oikawa.
Thanking the gods for giving Kuroo his intuition, you walked over to give him a hug. “He’s looking this way. Man, he’s pissed alright. He could freaking stab a person with his glare,” Kuroo whispered softly. “You better give me a good explanation later, Y/N,” he said before letting you go.
There was no conversation whatsoever between you and Oikawa during the practice matches; it was as if you were oblivious towards each other’s presence. Although you could see that something was definitely holding him back. He spaced out often, his spikes were out of place, and he even declined Iwaizumi’s request to do some extra training.
Deciding to freshen up before dinner, you put your bathing robe on and made your way to the inn’s bathhouse. Going through the huge red curtain that has the kanji ‘woman’ written on it, you tied your hair up into a bun before stripping out of your bathrobe and grabbing the small towel provided. You headed straight to the showers to wash yourself off before finally, finally, welcoming the warmth of the bath.
Closing your eyes, you could hear the chaos in the men’s bath next door. The loudest one being the orange haired boy from Karasuno, and the runner up would be the owl from Fukurodani.
“Alright, I’m doing it! It’s for their own sake!” you heard Bokuto’s voice through the thin wall before hearing a loud thump outside. What the hell is he doing?
After hearing another loud thump, Bokuto came back with loud footsteps. “Alright, I did it,” he announced to the group. “Perfect timing because Oikawa was literally right around the corner.”
What? Is he pulling a prank on Oikawa?
You quickly got up to stop whatever that was about to happen because you knew Oikawa was definitely not in the mood for pranks. Although before you could reach for the door to the dressing room, it slid open and you were greeted by a very rare sight in a typical woman’s bath: a built chest and toned abs. Your eyes darted upwards and there he was.
So this was what Bokuto had done.
“Oh my God, Tooru-kun, this-,”
“Y/N, do you like me that much?” he asked you monotonously, staring right at you with an icy cold stare. You tried to cover your naked self as much as possible.
“Wh-what do you mean? I’m here because-,”
“Do you like me that much that you want to literally seduce me with your body? Like how did you even know I was gonna be here?” he said, ruffling his hair while staring at the ground. “Y/N, first of all, I didn’t think you would be such a slut. Second, I’m obviously not interested in your bo-,”
You flung your hand across his cheek, leaving a huge red mark. Tears were starting to well up in your eyes and your voice quivered as you speak. “First of all, watch your tone. Second, there’s an explanation to this.”
You walked past him to put your bathing robe on, the self-consciousness from earlier completely disappeared. Walking through the now-blue curtain, you stomped to the bath next door, walked through the dressing area, and slid the door open with a loud slam.
The chaos died down, and the boys were looking at you with mouth agape. Your eyes scanned the bath for Bokuto, and upon meeting his gaze you trudged towards him with Oikawa still behind you.
“Bo, start explaining,” you said coldly to him.
“I swapped the curtains, thinking that you guys needed it. Come on, you haven’t spoken to each other all day! And-,”
“Bo, you crossed the line. I was planning to have a serious talk with Tooru anyway,” you said, scolding your best friend for his immature prank.
Oikawa had an unreadable expression when you looked over to him; a mix of anger, confusion, and perhaps regret. “I told you there’s an explanation. So don’t go around calling people slut,” you said as you walked past him.
Oikawa followed you and grabbed your arm to turn you around. “Y/N, I’m so sorry, I was just-,”
“Oh and also,” you said, ignoring his apology. “…I’m aware that I don’t have the best body out there, I mean, I wasn’t even conscious of it until you mentioned it to me. You hate me and you’ve shown it enough. From now on I’ll stay away from you.”
“Y/N, wait! I didn’t mean any-,”
You completely ignored his existence for the next two days, and Oikawa completely lost his mind. He couldn’t serve, he couldn’t spike, he couldn’t receive. His mind was completely shut down to the point where he injured himself during the last practice match against Karasuno.
Declining all kinds of assistance offered by his team mates, he staggered his way out of the gym to go to the nurse’s office. His ankle cried in pain, and all he wanted to do was to break down and let his frustration out. And so he did, slowly letting his knees fall weak, expecting the concrete to greet him with a loud thud. What he didn’t expect was two solid arms supporting his limp shoulders, his chin rested on a very small and somewhat fragile figure.
“Y/N…,” Oikawa said weakly. The softness of your hair, the sweet scent of your shampoo, your gentle touch against his skin.
The words he had said to you.
Hanging on to your small form, Oikawa let his tears gush out. “Y/N, I’m so sorry. I’m so, so sorry. Y/N, I didn’t mean anything that I said the other night. You–, you are not any of those things I mentioned. I can’t even say the word anymore, but Y/N, you aren’t. I’m sorry for calling you a–, a-,”
“Stop, Tooru-kun. I know. I know you didn’t mean anything. Do you think I didn’t realise your jealous stare when I gave Bokuto a hug? That stupid jealousy contest we did? Tooru-kun, why did you lie to yourself? Why-,”
“Because I don’t want to hurt you, Y/N. You’re special, very, very special to me. None of those fangirls could ever compare to you. I don’t want to ever hurt you Y/N. I might be busy with volleyball; I might have to keep acting the way I have been to my fans. These things, what if they hurt you? I love you too much Y/N. I do love you so much.” Oikawa put his arms around you, pulling you closer to him. “And Y/N, you don’t know how extremely hard I got when I saw you in the bath-,”
“Oookaaay, you can stop now. I don’t need to know the details,” you let out a giggle before cupping his cheeks in your hands.
“I’m glad you finally said it, Tooru-kun. So, talking formally in front of me, the over friendliness to your fangirls, they were all fake? An act you put up?”
“I guess so. I tried to push you away as best as I could. Did it work?” Oikawa innocently asked.
“Nope,” you said while pressing your forehead against his.
“…although if it was a movie, you did deserve an Oscar.”
You then closed the gap between the two of you with a kiss. A kiss full of love, a kiss full of hope. A kiss full of promise of the future that you both would undoubtedly spend together.
“I love you too. So much.”
