If you donât know what Baylisascaris is then you should not have a raccoon in your house.
Do you want worms in your eyes and brain? Because this is how you get worms in your eyes and brain.

You laugh, but literally the best way to decontaminate an affected area is with fire! Which is not so great when the affected area is your attic.
I used to work at a wildlife hospital and the amount of times Iâve blowtorched a raccoon pen made me never want to own a pet raccoon ever again lmao
âHuman infection with B. procyonis has been relatively rare, with about 30 cases reported since 1980. [âŠ] Reported disease has primarily afflicted children and almost all cases were a result of the ingestion of contaminated soil or feces.â
But sure, having a raccoon as a pet will kill you instantly.
Reports are rare because most people donât have close contact with raccoons. But if you keep one in your house you will be in contact with their feces. Instead of their feces being spread out in nature, it will be concentrated in the ownerâs yard or even their house. People also donât tend to wash their hands after touching their pets, so if the raccoon has feces on its fur, itâs probably not getting washed off before the owner pets it. The risk of exposure is so much higher when the animal is living in a persons home, sleeping in their bed, and probably climbing all over the surfaces of their house. Ingestion of contaminated feces doesnât occur because people shovel poop into their mouths. Besides young children, itâs much more accidental. People donât realize their is fecal matter on their hands and then they eat or touch their face. And considering B. procyonis is extremely hardy in the environment and canât be killed with the vast majority of disinfectants, once itâs in your house, itâs pretty much there to stay unless you burn your house down.
It wonât kill you instantly. Itâll kill you slowly and probably very painfully.
