I absolutely think adults, especially parents, ascribe manipulative intent to children when they shouldn't and it's absolutely a problem but it's always kind of funny to me when people go online and proclaim that children are incapable of manipulation. When I was three I asked my mom to get my older sibling their favorite candy bar at the grocery story because I knew she'd get me mine too as a reward for being thoughtful and that was way more likely to succeed than if I just asked for a candy bar for me. And it worked. Children scheme at a developmentally appropriate level the trick is not assuming children scheme at an adult level.

Came across this WWI era Navy recruitment poster over the weekend.
It was from the brief period in WWI where women were able to join the US Navy as full service members with equal pay. So this was part of how the US Government explicitly tried to appeal to women.

"I love how much potential there is with a character like him, it gives you so much room to play and develop him yourself" <- thing people say about minor character dude number four who shows up in a single scene and is never seen again.
Just saw someone ask how Ben is still functional after all the beatings and injuries he gets across the show - and yeah in the meta, it’s a mid-2000s tv show where that was just a trope with zero regard to concussions and brain injuries etc.
But also made me have a horrible thought that in-universe it was Jacob (and maybe the Island itself) keeping Ben alive because he was still a necessary puppet for Jacob. Like how people would die when they had ceased their usefulness, Jacob saw Ben as a useful tool so just kept him going with no real trauma recovery because it would get in the way.
Basically Ben traded one abusive, emotionally neglectful father (Roger) for another (Jacob). Goddamn my boy can’t catch a break, Hurley has a lot of trauma to sort through
(side note: I love that fan forums keep trying to diagnose Ben as a sociopath or psychopath but everyone comes to the conclusion that no, he’s just heavily heavily traumatised and super bad at dealing with it. I hope Hurley picked up some PTSD pamphlets…)
