so what i think the movie adaptation of bones and all should have done was objectively look at the source material and realize that the author made a very clear delineation between 'eaters' and cannibals. Maren and lee are not cannibals. The book got it right with the representation of, literally, them consuming their victims bones AND all else of them...only leaving behind shoes and clothes essentially. I think Luca Guadagino was playing too much into the indie feel of the film like how his other movies are stylized and neglected to explore deeper themes. is the book a supernatural thriller? no. should the movie have been? no. but when the author makes clear the difference between eaters and cannibals we should have seen it translated into the movie. and it could have been done without making it feel like a kitschy supernatural horror and still keep its quiet, indie feel. Canonically, while never explicitly stated, Maren and Lee are wendigos. or ghouls. while their k*lls are never detailed in the book, we know that they are consuming their victims whole, and i wished we could have seen a peek of that in the film. Maren, her jaw unhinging like a snake, a moment so stark from the scenery of the movie, then it never being seen again. you don't need witches and magic and ghosts to make this world believable. whether the viewer has read the book or not, they would see that these characters are NOT what you're meant to think they are based on the premise. it is a world of its own.
