Something I've come to realize in preparation for this game. Very little I come up with is as outlandish as what's been happening in New Orleans in the last few years. Truly wild. Especially since my players are starting as humans.
a vampire who has been around for hundreds of years showing little care and remorse for killing and embracing their nature, vs someone turned for maybe a year struggling with just biting someone and consent whilst also maintaining enough control not to kill or cause pain.
then the younger is reluctant to eat with the older because they know what their version of eating is, but the older just wants to help the younger not feel hungry for a little while.

All I'm asking for is a game that has basically the same framework of play as the Atelier series circa Atelier Ayesha (2012), except instead of a fresh-faced teenager with a cottagecore travelling workshop you're a thirtysomething burnout doing grey-market transmutation out of the back of a van. Is that really so much to want?
Pretty sure this was simular to a character concept a player brought to me a few years back. A vtm character concept, a Tzmisce providing medical care in an Astrovan. He was "perpetually tired" and hates the medical system.
whenever we have one (or more) of the PCs, truly play an antagonist to the rest of the party, i just appreciate it so much. madelaine is 261 years old, she fled from europe-leaving behind her beloved paris- because she's been around long enough to make a powerful enemy back home. she's old enough to know just how fucked up and cruel the camarilla are, and she is not interested in rocking the boat while they're providing her with safety and (relative) comfort. she wants to get out of purpee by ruffling the least amount of feathers possible, and she's going to look out for herself above all.
siobhan is such an incredible performer, because despite having created a character that people already love so dearly, she's choosing to make her less likeable. she's making the decisions necessary for real character development on madelaine's part. and it's going to get so ugly! but i have enough trust in siobhan as a storyteller, that i know her arc and conclusion are going to be so gratifying to watch!!!
like i just really love all the subtle ways that bigotry is invoked and influencing the way the characters interact with the world
lavonte doing so much of the fucking heavy lifting, only for the camarilla to defer to hj for explanation and give all the credit to madelaine for the work. only for madelaine to say that the system works when youre a part of the system to him when theyre alone. lavonte being a character that will read what kind of person someone is and say the thing they want to hear to get what he wants, even if it doesnt align with his wants and beliefs, sanding himself down to be easier to consume
madelaine being called a little girl despite being 261 years old; being stuck forever as a younger woman because the person who called her a little girl made her a vampire at such a young age. being scared of violence for stepping out of line, even though she holds a lot of power and privilege in her own right. using misogyny to her advantage by fitting that small, helpless role
amelia being hesitant to run for politics because she doesnt fit the heteronormative mold, and that being reinforced by hj saying she needs to have long hair to be palatable. maya being weary of lavonte, knowing now that this is a vampire coterie and not another queer couple in town, not trusting him anymore
obviously the plot is pretty centered around classism so i wont get into that, but like, theres a lot going on here and a lot of it isnt said out loud, its stuff that you can only get really by establishing the story takes place in our world and thus has all the prejudices that comes with that

Comparing Heights. Input the heights of characters to see what the different is between them. Great for keeping consistency. Free.
Magma. Draw online with friends in real time. Great for practice or hanging out. Free, paid plan available, account preferred.
Smithsonian Open Access. Loads of free images. Free.
SketchDaily. Lots of pose references, massive library, is set on a timer so you can practice quick figure drawing. Free.
SculptGL. A sculpting tool which I am yet to master, but you should be able to make whatever 3d object you like with it. free.
Pexels. Free stock images. And the search engine is actually pretty good at pulling up what you want.
Figurosity. Great pose references, diverse body types, lots of "how to draw" videos directly on the site, the models are 3d and you can rotate the angle, but you can't make custom poses or edit body proportions. Free, account option, paid plans available.
Line of Action. More drawing references, this one also has a focus on expressions, hands/feet, animals, landscapes. Free.
Animal Photo. You pose a 3d skull model and select an animal species, and they give you a bunch of photo references for that animal at that angle. Super handy. Free.
Height Weight Chart. You ever see an OC listed as having a certain weight but then they look Wildly different than the number suggests? Well here's a site to avoid that! It shows real people at different weights and heights to give you a better idea of what these abstract numbers all look like. Free to use.

Huh. I wonder if they weren't abandoned, the cost/environmental impact/efficiency matchup would look like between canals and railroads. I suspect the latter would still win, because they're marvelously efficient, but I wonder. Takes less work in the physics sense to move a shitload of cargo over the surface of water than on rails, doesn't it?

Actually just a sidenote here:
In southeast Louisiana, all the canals they dug created saltwater intrusion, which, wouldn’t be an issue if we hadn’t intervened in other ways.
BUT, since we diverted part of the water of the Mississippi River to protect New Orleans, all of the sediment isn’t reaching the delta to restore what salt water intrusion is eroding.
We disrupted natures ability to heal itself in the name of commerce.
To this day, we lose 2 football fields per year to saltwater intrusion. Our delta was our strongest protection against hurricanes, since they created a land barrier to starve storms of energy before they reached more densely populated areas.
(And since we’ve made the climate worse with constant fossil fuel consumption those storms are only getting stronger but that’s a story for another post)
So yeah. Canals kind of doomed New Orleans and most of southeast Louisiana. Grand isle is a shadow of what it once was and a bunch of other smaller communities don’t even exist anymore.
So uh. Yeah. I don’t care if canals are the most efficient foolproof way of transporting cargo. They’ve fucked up the wetlands of my home in a way we can never truly recover from. Like they’re TRYING but the state government dumps all the coastal wetland money into oil subsidies instead of restoring what we’ve lost.
Because it always comes back to money and “efficiency” with these people
For those less familiar with VTM lore, HJ and LaVonte made an oath not to just kill each other on the Golden Gate Bridge, but to do so after usurping the power of Caine, the God of the Vampires and the fourth Human being to ever exist. Also, when a Vampire devours another of a lower generation, they take and usurp those powers for themselves… presuming they’re strong enough of will and mind to fully take over the soul. Which HJ and LaVonte seem confident in. Like, they looked at each other and said “Together we’ll kill god and be better then he ever could before dying together.”
What a pair.
i know i'm absolutely reinventing the wheel here but i realllllly like the way city council of darkness approaches the question of "how would you handle the state of being innately, just by who you are, required to hurt and dehumanize some people if you want to live" and like the answers we get are:
the business world is designed for this! it's why they have HR! I will simply have people sign contracts, and even if the circumstances of that signing are unfair -- these people are consenting enthusiastically to the arrangement because the job market is so so bad that literally getting bitten is still an improvement on most situations. but like what can you do?
same as above but extra focused on disadvantaged entrepreneurs whom I feel a kinship to and want to do right by, and some innocents I look to protect with my power (while others are literally living furniture to me but I can genuinely make this endearing because, man, they offered, and that surrender sustains me as much as the blood and violence do. or more.)
oh no not I. I am smol. Do we not all use each other's bodies for status :) and protection :) and ooops well sometimes I take it too far. but have you considered: I am smol? I will dehumanize and demean myself, and then those who come close to me will have deserved all that I do to them :)

my trauma is so all-encompassing, and also so recent, that I have surrendered my willingness to make decisions about this. Being a good person sounds good to me! But I am open to other suggestions! I have built up a narrative that's disconnected from my reality, but that's fine, because within that narrative I can mostly keep doing good things for others (while banning myself from doing anything I want, even entirely morally neutral things - they become suspect simply because I want them)
and in particular, mitch vs. madelaine get into a competing access needs scenario over whether the nft guy should be quickly villainized and killed, or is he a precious enough resource to keep on tap.
it could be taken in a much darker direction than canon is likely to go, but even without that, it's just neat. i think to me, the most interesting layer is the one where they're still likeable and sweet and generally well-meaning, but their victims are also fully realized people, and we live in the friction of that, and also the dark humor of how it works out (in the business world and the dating world especially)
it's a shame that the trope of a character who looks 12 but is actually 300 years old is usually just used for ick fanservice because on a paper i think the psychology of a person stuck in permanent childhood has a lot of interesting story potential. unfortunately i would not trust a fandom with that character with a 100ft pole.
