Isak/Even | 1/15 Chapters | T

SUMMARY

Even’s ready to spend a chill senior year enjoying his last year of high school before graduation. But first he’ll need to pass Chemistry, a class he’s so spectacularly bad at that it’d take a miracle. What’s more, he’s landed the notorious Isak Valtersen as a lab partner. What little is known about Isak comes from largely outlandish and unfavorable rumors: whispers have ranged from him being a ruthless heartbreaker to his rumored participation in underground fight clubs.

But the boy sitting beside him every 3rd period period seems far from the rumors, and Even’s fascinated. Isak wears his hood up indoors. He doesn’t talk much. He scowls more than he smiles. And for someone who sleeps through every class, he aces every exam. Even just so happens to desperately need a Chem tutor, but he wants to be Isak’s friend more, and he’s happy to use as many terrible chemistry puns as it’ll take to get there.

Throw in a class president election that Even somehow finds himself running for, an actual underground fight club, and the fact that their lab experimentation isn’t the only chemistry happening between him and his lab partner, and somehow—Even finds his senior year turning out a little less chill than expected.

Chapter One: Another warm day

Summer on the windy west coast island is no different than ever. Calm, serene, and mostly uneventful, and Isak does not expect that to change. He’s eighteen now, after all—too old for games, swimming and bonfires. He’s fine working his summer job at the camping, helping his parents at the house, and being on his own.

Until suddenly, his childhood friend unexpectedly reappears as a camping guest. This time without a girlfriend, twice as hot, but maybe not as unattainable as Isak previously thought.

Far from the pressures of the city and its narrow literary scene, the expectations of his readers and the critics waiting for his next work. Here, he sought to escape the control and demands of his editor. But instead, Even felt he was sinking into a trap he wasn’t sure he would be able to get out of. — Even is a successful writer suddenly at a standstill, who decides that fleeing Oslo to spend the summer in the remote village of Grønnvåg in the northern fjords will help him write his new book. There, he will meet Isak and find a lot more than his lost inspiration.

Chapter 21: The Star (or 21 Short Films about Love)

He tells Isak that he would like to film a series of short films centered around the topic.

“And what topic is that?”

This. This, as in: “Love.” Because Love is what that word means too. It’s the “This” that Even has wanted the most.

The. Final. One. Number 21. We’re finally at the end of this long and winding story. The goodbye, but not the end, for our Even and his Isak.
