Quick little PSA to those who aren’t the most familiar with certain scams. Firstly Hi I’m Nyre, and back at the end of march of 2025 I got scammed out of my Bluesky account.(I eventually got it back thanks to Bluesky support thankfully, but not everyone who has a thing like that happen is so lucky.)
To put it simply, I am making this post because someone pretending to be tumblr support is using spam messages to scare people into giving personal information, tagged me in the comments of that post claiming to be tumblr.
This is phishing.(they make a post, and try to scare you into thinking something is wrong with your account so that you can give personal information, account access, and more to them.)
The first thing you need to keep in mind is if something were wrong with your account, Tumblr themselves would email you. The do not Direct Message, or tag users in the comments of posts.
Secondly even if the account has the tumblr logo in the profile picture, check to see what posts they’ve made and if they even have a username, because if it’s just a bunch of numbers then that’s a bot.
Finally if you suspect that it is phishing, Report that person’s post as “Spam” and then Block their account. By reporting the Post as Spam Tumblr will identify the false account, delete the post, and ban the bot from doing any more.
In addition to all this, these kind of things all apply to any social media platform as well, so next time someone direct messages and says your account was compromised, block them as their account is compromised and they’re trying to steal your account too. These services will email if your account is compromised.
Lastly, sometimes passwords can appear in data breaches, so 1 try to make your password long, and make sure to use numbers, Capital letters, and punctuation
Say your password is “imsohappy1234” that is a very weak password and can be guessed easily, “1mS0H4ppy!?!!” Would be a decent example of strengthening a password, but you should try and make your passwords different for different websites and different socials, one thing to try is making them something that’s personal to you that others wouldn’t guess.
As for if your password ends up in a data breach or you want to be safe in case of an event like that then try changing your passwords every 4 to 6 months to be safe.
With that out of the way.
To put things simply, check for these facts and don’t let some stranger take advantage of you and steal your account.
