i miss you pt.1 / rafinha
“I’m stressed Rafa, what do you want from me? I have a life too you know!” I argued with him for the fifth time that week.
“ALL YOU CARE ABOUT IS THAT STUPID HOSPITAL AND YOUR PATIENTS.” He yelled. “ITS MY OBLIGATION. I TOOK AN OATH. I KILLED MYSELF FOR YEARS AND I MADE IT. You have to understand this is my job Rafael.” I glared at him, my face extremely warm and my voice hoarse from all the screaming.
He stood there quietly, clearly not knowing what to say next. I sighed sitting down on the bed. Our bed. In our house. “What are we doing?”
“I don’t know why you always have to make a big deal out of this Rafa. You work, you travel, you’re always at practice. I know you work, why can’t you understand that?” I pleaded for him to hear me, to make it clear that I wasn’t avoiding him.
“I just miss you. You’re always on call. We never talk anymore.” His voice came as a whisper now. He looked tired, he seemed weak.
“I know but we can make this work Rafa just-” He cut me off before I could continue. “No we can’t. You’re married to your work just as I am. We can’t go on like this. It’s time we ended things.” I couldn’t believe him, but I wasn’t so surprised.
“It’s just like you, isn’t it Rafael Alacántara, always looking for the easy way out. But I understand, you always loved soccer more than me. You’d drop the world for the sport. I get it. Trust me this time I do.” I raised my voice, finding the courage I needed. He looked up at me, shock evident on his face. “Don’t even start. You know that isn’t true.” I didn’t let him finish, before turning around and walking out. “Yeah I’ve heard it all before.” I slammed the door shut behind me as I left that room, that house, and that relationship.
-
It’s been 7 months since our final argument. I moved out the same week. My job, a surgeon at the local hospital in Barcelona, didn’t allow me to spend much time home so I got a nice apartment close to my job. I was constantly busy and without a relationship I could focus more on my career. Of course that didn’t stop me from missing him. He was constantly on my mind.
“Y/N we got a patient coming in, he’s in excruciating pain, we might need to perform on him right away.” One of the other surgeons said to me. I nodded, “Book an O.R ahead of time.” They ran off. The doors burst open as a swarm of first responders and emts came rushing in. A nurse, a close friend of mine looked at me and handed me the patient’s chart. “Prepare yourself.” I looked at her strangely before briefly scanning his sheet. My heart stopped. His name stood out as if it was written in size 36 bold font: Rafael Alacántara.
I quickly read over his vitals and events leading to injury. He was playing and seemed to pull a few ligaments in his right knee. Despite our past I had to remain professional. I approached him, not looking at him once as I continued to read off more information about him, as if I didn’t know it all already.
“Good afternoon Mr. Alcántara. I’m doctor y/l/n and I’ll be assisting you today. Could you rate your pain on a scale of one to ten?” I didn’t look at his face as I took notes on his vitals. “Ten.” He said through gritted teeth. I nodded and turned to the nurse. “I need x-rays before I can perform any surgery. Get those done immediately and then call me.” I gave her his chart and turned to him. For the first time in seven months I was face to face with him again and I didn’t expect this to be how we would meet again. “Alright Mr. Alcántara, we’ll be taking some tests so we can know more on your injury. It seems like you will need surgery on your right knee but I can’t declare anything just yet. If you need anything don’t hesitate to let me or any of the nurses know.” I finished quickly and was about to make a safe exit before he spoke up. “Y/n.” I hesitated before turning back to him. “Yes?” He looked up at me, bloodshot eyes, “How long am I going to be out for?”
Seriously? He could’ve been seriously injured and, STILL, all he can think of is soccer? Amazing. Things never change. “I’m not sure right now Mr. Alcántara. I’ll have an answer for you soon.” I assured him. He chuckled, not genuine but cold. “You used to call me Rafa.” “Well some things do change. Excuse me.”
I walked out quickly turning the corner of the hall, panting. Don’t cry, not here, not in front of these people. I looked about and all my fellow coworkers gave me apologetic looks. “Well? Where are my results? C'mon people. This isn’t a novela.” They all ran about, continuing their everyday commotion. “With your life? Damn right it’s a novela.” Another one of the surgeons, a very nice and attractive young man said, winking at me. I laughed before heading off to do my routines.
When I didn’t have any surgeries booked I liked to help the nurses with their rounds, I had nothing better to do anyways. As I was finishing with a patient, the nurse returned with the x-ray results. She clutched her side, out of breath, “Here.” She handed them to me, I pursed my lips before heading to his room.
I pushed the door open and saw Neymar and Dani rise to their feet. “Y/n?” Ney asked. “Hello Neymar, how are you?” I asked politely, making small talk. “What are you doing here?” He asked disregarding my question. I raised my eyebrows, gesturing to my outfit. “I kinda work here.” “Oh yeah sorry.” He said turning bright red and sitting back down. I laughed and shifted my attention to Rafa.
“I have the results from the x-rays and it seems like you will need surgery. We can perform it today or tomorrow morning. It’s your decision.” I hesitated before continuing. “It could be a six to eight month recovery.” Dani cursed under his breath and Neymar reached for Rafa’s shoulder. “I’ll give you time to think this over.”
My friends were outside the room. “So?” They asked eagerly. “So what?” I looked at them confused. “Do you still get butterflies when you talk to him?” I rolled my eyes. “Oh please the only butterflies she gets is when she’s around me.” The surgeon from earlier, Zach, said. I laughed. “Oh please, in your dreams. Get his vitals for me okay Jas?” I said to the nurse who was my closest friend, Jasmine. She nodded, before running off. “Oh and Jas?” She turned to me quickly, “Yeah?” “Don’t try getting at Neymar please.” She blushed profusely and went to the room.
I laughed to myself and went to get a team together for his surgery. I told them I wasn’t sure of when he would want it and they all wanted an answer soon. I was going to speak to him when I was interrupted by Jasmine. “Yes?” I asked her impatiently. “I heard them talking about you.” She giggled like a school girl. I laughed and grabbed his chart, “Oh really? What did they say?” I asked playing along. She stayed quiet and I looked up, raising my eyebrow. “He-He said he still loves you.” She stuttered. “He said it’s not easy and he-” I cleared my throat. “That’s enough, thank you Jas.” She nodded and I proceeded to his room, a bit hesitant.
“Do you have an answer yet?” I asked him as I walked in. “I don’t want to pressure you but we need an answer.” He looked at me, “We?” Before I could evaluate, Zach interrupted me, “Yeah us. The team that will be working on you. I’m one of the other surgeons, Zach. You must be the infamous Rafael. It’s a pleasure. So is tonight the night? Or will you wait until tomorrow?” I didn’t hear him come in but he usually helps me break the news to patients or evaluate their injuries.
Rafa didn’t move his eyes away from him once, and gave the answer to him only. “I’d prefer to have it tomorrow.” Zach replied, “Good choice. The surgery is not urgent but we should do it soon. We’ll have it scheduled for tomorrow morning.” He then turned to me giving me his ever so charming smile, “I’ll let them know.” He walked out and I went to follow before I was once again called by Rafa. “So you guys seem to be close.” I was angry that he would imply anything about me and Zach, but I couldn’t raise my voice, Dani and Ney were still here. They sat quiet, avoiding my stare. “I work with him. He’s my second in command. But my life no longer concerns you.”
I was highly annoyed and left to do my final rounds. Neymar and Dani walked out after visiting hours were over. Dani gave me a hug and a quick goodbye. Neymar, on the other hand, stayed behind. “You know he misses you. There’s nothing he regrets more.” He said quickly. I looked away, “Neymar I don’t need this right now. I’m tired.”
“Just hear me out,” he continued “he loves you. All Rafa does is talk about you. Give him a chance.” I looked at him, “Then why won’t he tell me himself?” He shook his head and kissed my forehead, saying goodbye. When he was gone Zach approached me. “Is there any other guy I should know of?” I scoffed and pushed passed him. He grabbed my arm and spun me to face him, “Hey I was just kidding. What’s wrong princesa?” I shook my head as if to say nothing and pulled away.
These past 7 months Zach and I got very close. He was a good friend and he was there for me through the breakup (not to mention he was hot). But it was clear Rafa still owned my heart. I tried moving on, especially after all the rumors of him partying with his friends whenever he wasn’t training. He moved on, so why couldn’t I?
I fell asleep that night, alone, in my lonely apartment, with thoughts only of my rafinha.
My alarm blared and I looked over to see 5:00am shining bright red. I sighed, showered and got dressed. I drove to the hospital, despite how close it was I could get out late and it wasn’t safe to be walking around at such a late hour. With my coffee in hand I listened to my second in command tell me today’s plans. Zach droned on until he noticed I wasn’t paying attention. “You should’ve told me you didn’t care.” I turned my attention to him. “No, I do care. I’m just tired, that’s all.”
He didn’t say anything else and I knew he was upset. I didn’t have the time to go into detail so I told the nurses to prep Rafa for surgery and we alerted the surgical team we were ready. I scrubbed in and walked into the horribly white room. “Morning Mr. Alcántara.” I said to him. Zach stood across from me on the other side of Rafa, glaring at me the whole time. “Morning y/n.” He looked between the two of us and grinned. “You and your boyfriend had a fight?” I cleared my throat and ignored his comment. I signaled the anesthesiologist that he could begin. Rafa quickly reached for my hand and squeezed it, he was nervous. He gave me a shy smile but didn’t let go.
“You have nothing to worry about. You’re in good hands.” He nodded before drifting into unconsciousness. I nodded at my team. “Let’s begin.”
-
“We made sure he didn’t have a concussion or any brain damage from his fall. He does have bruising. The surgery was a success. As long as he takes care of himself he should be recovered in at least six months.” I assured the team that had all come to visit him. There shouldn’t have been this many people but they all insisted in being here. His mother and father burst through the room, followed by his brother.
“Y/n!” Both parents greeted me with hugs and kisses. I was very fond of them both and returned the gestures. “It’s nice to see you, we’ve missed you so much!” His mother began. “Ay that Rafa, I told him he made a mistake of letting such a fine girl go!” His father said. Thiago rolled his eyes, “Papa ya, leave the poor girl alone.” I laughed and gave them a smile. “It’s no problem at all. Now if you’ll excuse me I have to go. I’ll be back to check on him soon.” The chatter continued as I left the room and I bumped into Zach in the hall.
“Zach about earlier-” I started. He raised his hand. “No need to apologize. I knew you weren’t over your ex, it’s my fault for falling for you.” He gave me a small smile as if he didn’t just reveal his feelings for me. “See you around.”
I stood there shocked and Jasmine came behind me. “Wow two super hot guys like my best friend! One a famous soccer player and another a famous surgeon! How exciting. Hey this is like a novela!” She said before walking off.
