All in all, Horatio had been pretty much avoiding everyone who wasnât Carina, Andrea, or Serra since the vote. The last thing he wanted to deal with was the smugness of some of the crew, or the awkwardness with others, and honestly, most of the crew seemed just as intent on avoiding him too, given that they all knew his feelings well. So when he found Semenova coming at him out of nowhere, he couldnât help but let out a sigh, not nearly mentally prepared to have the conversation he knew was coming. Out of everyone else, they had been the most opening glad with the decision that had been made, no surprise there. He didnât mind their teasing on a normal day, but no days were really going to be ânormalâ anymore, now that they were headed straight into potential danger.
âDisappointed isnât nearly a strong enough word for how Iâm feeling, Semenova,â he said with a bitter laugh. At least their teasing wasnât making him angry, yet. That was a good sign. Really, he just felt more defeated at the moment. Which was honestly better than most everything else he had been feeling since the vote. âI donât think even the potential of alien sex could turn this around for me, if Iâm being honest.â
Feriel wasnât what someone would call empathetic, by no means. They usually disregarded the feelings of others, not really taking an interest in them. It was how they had grown up, and they didnât know any different. Dr. Karkarov had pretty much the first person to show kindness to them, but that hadnât been enough to change years and years of loneliness and alienation. However, they did understand fear; and even though they were disappointed at Horatioâs cowardice, some part of them could comprehend why they were feeling the way the were feeling. Perhaps if they had somewhere or someone to go back to, they would be experiencing the same he was right now.Â
âWell, CM, that blows.â They chuckled. âBut it is what it is now, and you should look at the positive.â Their nose wrinkled immediately at their own words. They sounded like a bloody self help book. Awful. âForget I said that, Iâd rather burn to death when we go through that atmosphere than turn into an optimist. But you know what I mean. Feeling sorry for yourself itâs only going to make it worse.â
