Evil Crusher Maya by Masami Kurumada

Those of you who know Masami Kurumada probably know him as the creator of Saint Seiya. However, he has made several other series before and after Seiya like B't X, Fuma no Kojiro, and of course, Ring ni Kakero. Evil Crusher Maya is a one shot that came out around the same time as B't X (which is where his art was at its peak), and was published by Enix's Monthly Shonen Gangan in 1996. The protagonist, Maya, is also different from Kurumada's usual shonen MCs, who are high-spirited and hot-blooded. He is instead calm and collected, sometimes broody, but only wants to regain his humanity in the end. Summary of the story as stated in the tankōbon:

From the Land of Dark Night emerges a lone warrior named Evil Crusher Maya, who came to eliminate the Evils lurking in this world! The Evils, planning to re-awaken in the human world, had attacked seven girls in the name of God. Maya's fate after the battle is uncertain. What could have transpired after the battle...!?

Something worth protecting

I wonder if I went overboard— just a tiny bit. I jumped in there then insisted to them “Lemme spar!”, hit my partner with a knockout blow (dammit, really didn’t mean to do that), and more than likely ruined the boxing gym’s reputation. But hey— if there was anything that could be considered the quickest way to gauge my true strength— well then, this was it, heheh! In any case, I just need to earn some money fast. You probably know by now that I’m not exactly a regular human being. And I get it, I’m not fit to be a parent; don’t have the biggest brains or whatever the hell you’d call “familial relations” either. Still…. While looking for my old man, I met this guy. He’s just a little kid who was being kept by those people so they could find ways to abuse his zoanthrope abilities. I couldn’t just leave him there— in that place. Now that I’ve decided to take him in, I gotta keep him well fed.

It didn’t suit the kind of guy like me to simply work a part-time job for a measly wage— at least that’s how I felt. By going the pro-boxer route instead, I figured I’d be able to make a killing in no time. No offense those guys but, when it comes to fistfights, I don’t like losing even though it’s mean of me not to hold back. I know that if anyone ever finds out I’m a zoanthrope, someone might cause a commotion. But… I honestly couldn’t care less about that; it’ll probably be fine. Doesn’t really matter right? I mean, it’s not like I’m actually gonna morph into my beast form to fight. Wouldn’t make sense showing off my fangs or claws considering I’d be fighting with gloves on after all. I wanted to take on the challenge for the title of champion immediately, but I heard that there’s tons of complex procedures you have to go through to actually become a pro— tests and all that tiresome stuff. Guess I’ll have to start from the beginning as a trainee for now. Argh, it’s pretty annoying— though, you know what they always say— no pain, no gain. Sorry little guy, but it’s gonna take a while to get my boxer’s license. Until then, just leave everything to me okay? Once I become a pro, I’ll buy and feed you all sorts of good food with my fight money…..

“Hey, hey, dad. Um… y’know, I…. have something to ask you.” “What is it Jeanne?” “Well, my real dad and mom are in heaven right?” “Ah, yes that’s right. What’s the matter? Have you been feeling lonely?” “Mm mmh, I’m fine! Cause I’ve got you dad. Err… anyway, that’s not what I was talking about. What I mean to ask is… dad, I was wondering how you found me. Yeah, that’s it.” “You mean the first time you and I met each other? How terrible, have you really forgotten?” “-I didn’t forget! But… y’know, … uhhh…. yeah ok, sorry…” “No need to apologize. You were so little back then; it can’t be helped that you don’t remember. Besides, your question isn’t entirely accurate. It wasn’t that I found you, it was more like you found me.” “Eh?! That can’t be true! I mean, I was super tiny then right? I couldn’t’ve done something like that! Dad, you gotta be lying.” “I wouldn’t lie to you. Without your parents around, you were left in the care of the church. You really don’t remember do you?” “Hmm…. uhh….” “You were quite the rascal you know. You didn’t pray, you ate your food with your hands, you rode the next door neighbor’s dog like a horse and pulled on its fur. You also didn’t listen to the priest and sisters at all, and when they tried to punish you after having been so exasperated, you’d kick up a huge fuss gnashing your teeth and scratching at them….. Well, I wonder if you still have those bad behaviors even now.” “N-no way! …. So, dad, you didn’t like me then…”

“There was nothing to like or dislike. Like I said, you were the one who found me. I just happened to be visiting the church that day and you jumped onto me all of a sudden you know. I was surprised but the priest even more so. You, who never let anyone, not even the people you were around everyday, get close to you, had come face-to-face with me in a tight hug. The sisters hurriedly tried to pull you off, but you clung too tightly for us to be separated. ‘Let her do what she wants.’ I pleaded. I thought that eventually you would get tired and let go… I underestimated your stubbornness. Not only did you not let go after such a long time, but you also started to doze off into a sound sleep. The priest must have felt there was something going on between us; he said he wanted to consult with me regarding your future. And so, with you still biting and clinging to me, it was decided that we would leave the church together.” “…. Must’ve been annoying huh….” “Jeanne, you haven’t been listening. Not a day has gone by since that day where you have been a nuisance to me. About your parents, what we just talked about…. I’ve told you the whole truth. And do you know why? It’s because I don’t want to be the kind of father who lies and hides things from his daughter. What parent wouldn’t be happy to be hugged by their own child? Tekken 1 guidebook translation: Lee appears

I translated a portion of the Tekken 1 guidebook; specifically the part where Lee is introduced. Basically, Lee really wants Kazuya to know he'll be fighting him in a "teehee can you guess :D ?" kind of way lol. Lee's name is also written as Chaolong (李超龍), not Chaolang (李超狼) here, so the Bruce Lee references are more apparent. There's a pun on Lee's name that Kazuya uses to mock him at the end, where the character for "super" (超) is replaced with "cowardly" (怯), so instead of Lee's name meaning Super Dragon, it becomes Cowardly Dragon. Anyway, here it is:

A few months ago, a man appeared to him in his room alone.

“Who is it?” asked Kazuya.

“It’s been a long time since I saw you, Onii-sama,”

The man’s silver hair shone brightly in the dimly lit room.

“Lee…. Chaolan,”

It was Kazuya’s adopted brother— not related to him by blood. As a child, he was adopted into the Mishima family when Kazuya was 13 years old.

“Onii-sama made it to the finals of the tournament too, right?”

“That a bad thing for you?”

“No, not really. Father is also looking forward to seeing you, Onii-sama,”

A creeping sensation came upon the wound on Kazuya’s chest once again.

“Hehe, what’s wrong?”

Kazuya wanted to give his younger brother a brutal beatdown every time he saw that bold smile on his face.

“Here’s a list of participants who made it to the final rounds of the tournament that’s been circulating behind the scenes; if you don’t mind me sharing with you. There’s a top-secret profile included too you know,”

Having said that, Lee held out the file to Kazuya.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?!” Kazuya retorted while ignoring the file.

“….. I’m looking forward to fighting you Onii-sama. That is, if you don’t run away. Hahahaha- ARGH!”

Kazuya smashed his fist into Lee’s face.

“Who’s going to find any comfort in running away Chaolan?”

“Ugh-…… I…. I’m gonna kill you for that!!”

Kazuya rushed forward in a furious rage, slamming his fist into Lee, which sent the startled man crashing out the window and falling to the bottom of the building.

“AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHH…..!!!!”

Tekken Tag Tournament 1 card of Kazuya & Lee. It's nice that the game officially acknowledged their relationship as a tag team. Also, it's hilarious that Kazuya would never consider anyone his rival (sorry Paul) and is basically like "No time to lose, must kill Chaolan NOW,"

Here's the translation of the text:

Rivals over who will become the heir to the Mishima zaibatsu. They are young brothers who both bear the weight of the future of the Mishima family. But Kazuya has no intention of doing so. Authority and power is something that should be taken by force; he does not believe in simply being "nominated" as his old man's successor. Kazuya's pride would never allow him to recognize Lee Chaolan as a rival. Taking the lead and thinking ahead, Kazuya declares that he will not be replaced. He is determined to show Lee that he is of a far higher caliber by finishing off his brother alone.

Scene from the Tekken 3 manhua. It's a flashback of 10-year-old Forest's first meeting with Paul. He challenges Paul to a fight but we all know how that turned out. There's a lot of awesome and badass moments with both of them in the manhua, so if you're a fan of Forest and/or Paul, I recommend checking it out. It is in Chinese tho, and there are no English translations; which is why I try translating some of it.
