I wanted to reference Golden’s costume and I think it turned out pretty well. Designing a suit without a cape that doesn’t look like a future soldier’s uniform or some kind of space adventurer is a challenge.
Edna would be proud.
A bit more about the details:
The symbol Rumi wears is a slightly modified version of the Kryptonian letter R. The star is meant to represent the Sun - the first star she ever connected with “home.”
Her left shoulder has a dragon motif, a little reference to one of the ways to write Ryū (dragon). At some point Rumi started using Ryu as her superhero name (hiding in plain sight works surprisingly well).
Peering around the corner, Zoey scanned the room ahead. Rumi crouched at her heels, covering their six o'clock.
It was empty, and dark–the walls scrawled with luminous paint that glowed beneath the blacklights above–and fog inched along the ground like some creeping predator, obscuring the floor but exposing whatever moved beyond the next doorway, knee-high and irregular. Zoey would bet her whole paycheck there were bad guys out there, just out of sight.
She withdrew from her observation, turning to Rumi and–
And jeez, she was pretty.
Eyes dark and patterns flickering and a focused frown creasing her eyebrows; the armor covering her biceps and chest and thighs was a little in the way of Zoey's ogling, but that was probably for the best. They had work to do.
"So there's–" She began, but then Rumi's gaze snapped to her, plastic pistol held close to her chest and demon eye glowing, and Zoey's brain made a noise like a gameshow buzzer instead of feeding her the rest of her sentence.
Rumi noticed, of course.
Even in the dark, Zoey could see the glint of her fangs as she grinned, the curve of her lip tugging at the pattern running through her eye. She stood–slow, sinuous and smooth and dangerous–and leaned into Zoey's space, murmuring, "There's…?"
Welp. There sure was.
Zoey nodded, and swallowed, and hoped that whoever was on the other side of that room wasn't actively creeping up on them; she was not ready.
"Um…"
Rumi stepped close enough to cage Zoey against the wall–close enough that their chest armor scraped softly–before she dropped the pistol to her thigh and Zoey was trapped, she couldn't raise her gun and she couldn't move and–
(And, well, she was right where she wanted to be–)
"Bad guys. On the–y'know. We gotta–shoot bad guys."
Rumi hummed, and Zoey could feel it on her lips, and the gameshow buzzer buzzed again and suddenly she cared a whole lot less about shooting bad guys, but–
"Right. Bad guys." Rumi's nose brushed hers before she smirked. "I like this game."
Which was all well and good but Zoey was about two seconds from starting a new game, and that game was called How Many Times Can I Make Rumi–
"It's way more fun than your other videogames."
Waaaaait a minute. Pause.
Zoey snorted, "This is not a videogame, Rumi. This is lasertag. It's lasers."
Rumi shrugged, their armor scraping again. "Still. This is much more fun." She leaned in, brushing her cheek against Zoey's. "I like seeing you move in front of me."
Insane work. Diabolical. They were supposed to be on the same team, actually–as much as anyone can be on a team in a Free-For-All match–and Rumi was saying shit like that, like Zoey wasn't gonna immediately think of the last time she moved in front of Rumi–
"But you're right." Rumi dropped a tiny little kiss on the tip of Zoey's nose. "We should mop up the last few bad guys before they sneak up on us, yeah?"
Why she made that a question was beyond Zoey; there was a distinctly NSFW soundtrack playing in her head at the moment (the last time she moved in front of–) so it wasn't like she could actually answer.
Still, when Rumi stepped back to take point, Zoey sucked in a breath and shook her head, locking in; she might have even succeeded, too, sort of–ignoring how her eyeballs were drawn straight to Rumi's ass like magnets–as Rumi peeked around the corner.
With her nonfiring hand she reached back, patting Zoey twice: Ready?
Zoey shook herself out, held up her gun in her sweaty fist, and patted back three times. Go.
Rumi entered the room first, stepping a half-circle around the doorway to clear the front before she tilted in, pistol aimed deep into the corner on the left. Zoey followed, flowing straight in to the right, clearing the near and the far corners before switching to the cross–Rumi's far corner–and stopping. The room remained empty, and the fog at their feet moved silently.
Catching her eye, Rumi nodded once and tapped her ear. Zoey cocked her head, listening–and heard the frantic whispers just beyond the door. She nodded, and together, they crept forward.
The last two Free-For-All survivors were brothers, Zoey thought, but that didn't stop the one from hiding behind the other when Rumi burst through the doorway, glowing and shooting her lasers. Their armor burst into strobing color when they were hit, and the smaller one muttered under his breath at the bigger one as they left the arena.
And then it was just her and Rumi.
Rumi realized it at the same time Zoey did, and she pressed the advantage immediately; their opponents were no sooner around the corner, heading towards the exit, than she had Zoey against the wall, mouth hot on hers and a thigh between her legs.
"Have I ever told you how good you look like this?" She breathed against Zoey's lips, low and rough. "Maybe we should ask Celine how to make your Honmoon weapon a gun. It's really hot."
Laughter bubbled up from Zoey's chest. "You think Celine is gonna give me a Honglock because it makes her adopted daughter horny? Really?"
Rumi grumbled, "Shut up," and Zoey was ready to argue but then Rumi moved and the buzzing was back, and a whine was high and thready in her throat, and–
"You know there's cameras in there, right?"
Mira's voice rang out over the loudspeakers, amused. "Not that I'm complaining, of course. Just thought I'd remind you."
Rumi hesitated, weighing Mira's words, before she sighed. "Guess we should head out?"
Zoey hummed, breathless and grinning. "Guess so."
Wrapping her hand around Zoey's, Rumi leaned in and pressed a kiss to her forehead. "Oh, and Zoey?"
"Hm?"
Pew!
Zoey's chest plate buzzed and strobed, illuminating Rumi's shit-eating grin.
I have many questions I want to ask, but right now… I have an art question.
I want to get into drawing (got a little inspired by your work and want to try), but I have no clue how or where to start. I have pencils and pens, and I even have a guide on how to draw faces, but that’s kinda it.
What would be your advice for a beginner? Tips? Resources? How do you do it without your mind getting in the way (laziness and stuff)?
Honestly just to get started. Take the leap and put pencil to paper. Doodle something silly. Doodle something familiar. Enjoy the process, and then you can get into the nitty gritty of it. Art is hard but less so if you like it.
