Violet couldn’t help the blush that made its way to her cheeks, when he spoke so genuinely like that it made her heart flutter. “You mean a lot to me too. The world, really.” She smiled.

“True food is usually involved” she chuckled. “Why is this one special?” She asked, raising an eyebrow at him whilst taking a sip of her wine.

He smiled and reached out for her hand. She always made him feel warm and completely at ease. “Thank you for saying so,” He said, brushing his thumb over the back of his hand. 

He gave her a soft smile, still intent on keeping the fact that he was going to purpose a secret. “Any time I get to spend with you is special.” He shrugged, doing his best to come off as nonchalant.

Alice glared at this Pirate man, who seemed like a pain to be around, she didn’t appreciate when he scoffed at her. “Yes. Word spread. It isn’t every day that a Lord’s child get kidnapped.” she said, putting a lot of emphasis on the word. 

“Alice. Stop” Violet said firmly, then looked at Nick “I did hate you. For a few hours maybe. At most” she chuckled.

As the Pirate spoke, Alice looked back between him and Violet, trying to see if he was being truthful, and she wasn’t brainwashed or something along those line. But she looked, healthy, and happy. “I- So-” Alice shook her head, as if it would make her understand more. She was being informed everything she had been told about her best friends disappearance had been a lie. “So you chose? To leave?” she asked, this time looking only at Violet. 

Violet sighed, she never thought she’d actually be asked that question, it filled her with guilt, leaving always had when shed thought about it for too long. But she nodded. “Yes, but it was one of the hardest things I’ve had to do Al, the hardest even. I just knew I was never going to be fully happy there, married to some man who’d tell me where to go, what to do, and control every aspect of my life. Please don’t hate me for that”

“I can assure you, Violet was not kidnapped.” He said, just as firmly. 

Nick chose to stand back just then and let the two women speak with one another, hopefully Alice would come around, because he knew that Violet missed her, he knew that she had many things that she would want to tell the other girl. 

Violet started talking about how she’d had such a hard time choosing what she should do, and Nick remembered the frustration that he’d felt himself back during that time. When he wasn’t sure if he was allowed to ask her to stay with him. He reached out and put his hand on her back.

“No? Is kidnaped more appropriate?” Alice said, looking Nick dead in the eyes. Then looked at Violet, she looked different, more sunkissed than she once had looked, her hair was longer, and less well kept. Though she did look- happy? But it had been years she could simply have accepted her horrible fate. “Spiteful? I hope so. I’m glad my feelings are getting across. And I think I do know what I’m talking about. The word spread like fire when Lord Ogden came back from trying to get Violet” she said, looking at her friend “Vi, come with me now, we can go back home, there’s nothing he can do, we’re in the middle of the busiest street in town, he can’t make a scene.” She said, her voice quiet as she turned to her friend, giving her hands a squeeze.

Violet looked back to Nick and hoped he could see how confused she was at the whole situation, Alice had never been like this. She had always wanted to see the world too, why was she upset that Violet had been doing just that like they spoke about? “Alice I appreciate what you’re trying to do but I’m completely fine, wait what did my father say?” She asked, this whole interaction didn’t make sense.

“He said what happened” Alice frowned in confusion “That as soon as he handed over the ransom money, the pirates took off, without giving you back. That they never had any intention of doing so.” She explained, unsure why Violet had asked.

Violet looked back to Nick again, and scoffed at the situation, of course her father had twisted what had happened to save face. Why hadn’t she known he’d have done that. She turned back to her friend “Alice, that is not what happened. I went back to Nick’s ship willingly, the days I spent on his ship when he picked me from the ocean, originally I hated him, like you do now. But I fell in love with him” she chuckled, holding Alice’s hands. “I jumped in the ocean to get back to him. Father was going to marry me to Lucius Malfoy”

“What? Lucius? But- Violet you can’t swim” Alice said, completely confused, her aggressive manner slid away and the Alice Violet knew came out.

Vi laughed “I can now”

“Is this true?” Alice said, turning to Nicholas, not sure why she wanted his confirmation, but she did.

“No, kidnapped is not a more appropriate word.” He scoffed, shaking his head. This girl was unbelievable. “Oh word spread did it? I’m sure Lord Ogden told everyone the truth of what happened too.” He shook his head. 

“Well I don’t think she ever actually hated me.” He smirked at her before turning back to Alice. “She tried, and I suppose I’ll give her points for that. But the rest of it is true. I had to pull her out of the ocean twice.Because you’re right, she didn’t know how to swim.” He’d been quick to teach her after that though, since she had a propensity for falling or jumping into the water and he didn’t want her to drown.

“Good” She smiled, lightly tracing her finger around the top of her wineglass. “You are tonight” she chuckled, then picking up the glass and taking a sip. “Don’t mind a bit of sap.”

“I do. Bad jokes and competition, a lot of the time”she teased, taking another bite of her meal. “Wow you really were looking forward to this date, must have spent a lot of time planning it” she grinned. “I was very excited too”

“Well I’m glad you don’t’ mind. Because I’m quite enjoying being sentimental. You mean a lot to me and I want to tell you that.” He grinned, watching her finger as it traced her wine glass and then looking up at her. 

“There’s usually food involved as well,” He laughed, and then shrugged a shoulder. “But that’s a pretty fair assessment.” He tilted his head to the side. “I look forward to all of our dates, but this one might be special.” He chuckled. “I’m glad that you were excited.”

Alice’s attention moved to Nick when he held out his hand, and all the stories came rushing back to her, about Violet’s disappearance, and the rumours, of which she had no idea which was true, and which wasn’t. Alice looked at the man’s hand, and folded her hands in front of her. “Nicholas, the Pirate who stole my best friend from me and from her family. I’ve heard quite a bit about you too. And I hate you. How dare you come to England, are you planning on snatching another helpless girl?” She said sharply, finishing with tight lips and her eyes moving to Violet. She wasn’t worried, if this pirate wanted to kidnap her too she would go kicking and screaming, and there were lots of people around. He wouldn’t make it three feet.

Violet’s mouth dropped open at Alice’s words, she’d dreamed about the possibility of seeing her again, and it never had played out like this, it had been all smiles and laughter. “Alice” she hissed. “That is not what-”

“Violet I hoped I would meet you again one day, but never in my wildest dreams- no nightmares, did I think you would be with him” Alice said, reaching out and pulling Violet away from Nick slightly as she spoke. 

“I think saying I stole her is incorrect- and a bit of a disservice to Violet here.” Nick said, trying to diffuse the situation. But it quickly became clear that that wasn’t going to happen. She hated him? And she was just going to tell him like that? Who was this girl? Nick cleared his throat and looked over at Violet, because it didn’t seem to matter to Alice what Nick had to say. She’d have to hear the truth from Vi.  But then when Violet tried, Alice didn’t let her get more than five words out before interrupting. 

Nick let Alice pull Violet away, not wanting to turn his love into some tug-of-war toy for them to fight over. “You’re acting awfully spiteful and confident for someone who doesn’t have a clue what they’re talking about,” Nick said, crossing his arms over his chest.

Violet’s smile felt like it would crack at any point it was getting so big. “Growing old? Even when I’m all grey and won’t have sex with you anymore because I’m too tired?” she teased, but then he continued and she felt her cheeks go pink. “You’re awfully sappy tonight. I quite like it.” she chuckled, swirling her wine around her glass.

“It’s like I was there with you? What on earth does that mean?” she laughed. “All boring paperwork and no fun? Because that does sound a lot like my work a lot of the time.”

He laughed, “Even then.” He assured her, enjoying the pink tinge her cheeks took. “Dunno why, but yeah, I am awfully sappy.” He picked up his wine glass and took a sip. In truth, he knew exactly why he was being sappy, but he didn’t want to hint at anything. “I’m glad you like it though,” He smiled at her. 

“It means you know exactly what Frank and I get up to most of the time.” He laughed, “But yeah, today was a rather slow day. Especially because I knew I’d be seeing you for this fabulous date tonight, so it was hard to actually get through the paper work.”

“It does, but thank Merlin we’re not that old yet” she giggled, winking at him as she took at sip of her wine. “At least” she repeated with a snicker.

“How was work today? Anything special happen? Anything interesting? Or was it just you and Frank goofing off like I imagine it is?” She teased.

He took a sip of his wine as well and nodded. “I don’t mean to get sappy, but I don’t think I’m gonna mind growing old with you. I mean, think of all that we have in front of us still. And I’ve got you by my side to go through all of it with me.” He smiled at her, the small box in his pocket demanding his attention for just a moment. 

“Work?” He chuckled, “It’s like you were there with us. It was a pretty quiet day honestly. I sat in with Moody on a couple of interrogations and then filed a bunch of paperwork.”

Violet felt Nick tense, and gave his arm a reassuring squeeze to let him know everything was alright, she knew being on land made him nervous sometimes in the first place so it didn’t help when someone called one of their names unexpectedly. 

“I’m- oh gosh, I can’t believe it’s really you, my family lives here now, we moved back to England a few years ago. What happened to you Violet? Where did you go?” Alice said. 

Violet was completely in shock, she hadn’t ever expected to see Alice ever again after leaving to join Nick, she felt like she was seeing a ghost “I, oh my, come here” she said, pulling the girl into a tight hug, letting go after a few moments. “Al, this is, this is Nicholas” Violet said, unsure as to how to address him or explain what had happened. “Nick, this is Alice Fortescue”

Nick just kept looking back and forth between them. And then Violet told her who she was and he raised his brow. “Alice?” He looked at Violet for a second and then stretched his hand out to her. “Well it’s nice to meet you, Alice. I’ve heard quite a bit about you.” He knew that Violet had missed Alice and he couldn’t believe that they’d just happened to run into her directly after coming back into the country after months and months. He’d be lying if he said that he didn’t think that this was some kind of trap. He started glancing around for navy men or Violet’s father.

“Alright then” she nodded “A picnic will be lovely, can we get some fresh fruit? I’ve been craving some strawberries for weeks” she smiled, squeezing his arm slightly. She laughed when he spoke about a tree “right, an interesting tree. Well why don’t we put that at the top of our to do list then?” She teased with a giggle.

“Violet?” Suddenly a voice came from behind them, and Violet stopped, confused that someone had said her name, turning around to see who it could have possibly been.

“Oh my god” she gasped when she saw who the voice belonged to, a short blonde girl, with wide eyes and a mouth hung open in surprise, mirroring Violets. “Alice? Surely not, what on earth are you doing here?”

“I’ll get you whatever you want,” He promised, thinking that some fresh fruit sounded good to him as well. “We should probably make sure the whole crew gets some fruit and-” But then someone was calling out Violet’s name. He tensed, not sure who that voice belonged to or how they knew Violet. Nothing good normally came from a stranger calling out the name of someone on his ship. 

But then, when they turned around, it was a short blonde girl who seemed very nonthreatening. He looked at Violet and raised his brow when she recognized the women. Alice? Her friend from before? Well this would be interesting.

“Twelve- Sure, it definitely feels that way” she laughed “It’s been three, nearly four, dingus” she rolled her eyes, though she knew he was just being stupid. “Though I think we could make it to twelve, if we tried” she chuckled. 

He laughed. “It feels like twelve years since we were seventeen, but at the same time, I feel like time has flown by with you.” He shrugged one of his shoulders. His smile got a tad more tender when she said that they could make it to twelve. “At least twelve.” He agreed.

“Good, thank you” she smiled, pulling him in and giving him a quick kiss. “Is there anything that you wanted to get? Or wanted to do, while we’re docked?” she asked, looking in shop windows as they passed them.

“Promised Clarence that I’d get some more rope, but we don’t have to do that now. Let’s just have fun today. Go on the picnic I mentioned earlier and enjoy some views that the sea doesn’t have. Find a interesting tree to look at or something,” He joked, still smiling at her.

Violet raised an eyebrow at him, then rolled her eyes, stepping off the ramp and looking around the dock, figuruing out which way to go. “Okay maybe pout isn’t the right word. But you do this thing where your brows furrow and you cross your arms”

It wasn’t fair that he had his eye brows furrowed and his arm poised to fold up against his chest just as she said that. He quickly schooled his features and shook his head. “Alright, let’s just go and I’ll behave.” He promised and then started off toward town.

“Of course I do, and you enjoy teasing me just as much so don’t even start” she laughed, sipping her wine. “Yes okay but I was seventeen, and silly, and I still couldn’t really believe that you felt the same way about me that I did about you. Can you believe we’ve been together since we were seventeen? We were so young, we were children” she chuckled.

It wasn’t as though he could deny it, especially since in doing so would be a form of teasing her. “Well I couldn’t believe that you liked me either.” He said. “Still can’t believe how lucky I got.” He grinned. He tilted his head and raised his brow. “Since we were seventeen. So it’s been like twelve years now, yeah?”

“Oh calm down, I’m asking you not to make the salesperson mad at us is that so hard?” She laughed, smacking his arm lightly. “No I’d go by myself and you’d get all pouty. But I don’t want to do that because going alone isn’t as fun. So please try” she chuckled.

“Yeah yeah,” He pressed his lips together to try and keep a smile from his face, but it didn’t do much but show him being impertinent. Then he scoffed, “Excuse you,” He raised a brow. “I’m a pirate captain, I do not pout.”

“Then maybe keep it to yourself for now” she chuckled. As he told her how beautiful she was she grinned, flicking her hair behind her shoulder with a smirk “Why thank you so much, what an out of the blue compliment.”

“I did know that. But I enjoy teasing you.” She smiled “plus I don’t worry about that anymore. Maybe I did when we first started dating but Alice pretty much squashed that thought out of my head, told me I was being stupid”

“You’re right, I can always tell you later.” He winked at her, his foot nudging hers again. He laughed when she flicked her hair over her shoulder. “You’re most welcome, my love.” He smirked. 

“You enjoy teasing me?” He grinned. “Well that just sounds mean, don’t you think?” He narrowed his brow. “Alice had to tell you that you were being stupid? Even before we were dating, I paid way too much attention to you.” He laughed.

“I am too” she nodded as the walked down the ramp. “I do want to go to dress shops, but only if you promise not to make fun of things when we’re in the shop. That woman last time was about to throw us out and it was very embarrassing”

“Only if I promise? And what if I refuse to promise? What I tell you that I’m going to do what I always do and there’s no change me? And no controlling what I say? You’d still let me come with you, yes?” He teased, “Though I suppose I could promise to trying to behave myself.”

Violet laughed, “That depends entirely on what you’re going to say, but I have a funny feeling that no, it’s probably not acceptable.” She said, sipping her drink. “But you know, feel free to tell me I’m beautiful and funny” she grinned.

“Yeah that’s the exact phrase that a girl wants to hear from her boyfriend” she teased, then started on her meal.

“Yeah I don’t think it would be acceptable.” He shook his head, still smiling. “Feel free? Why thank you so much. You are beyond beautiful and my cheeks always hurt from smiling after seeing you.” 

He waved away her comment. “I wasn’t talking about looking at other girls and you knew that. We’re talking about food.”
