You probably have heard of mitochondria (the powerhouse of the cell) and of chloroplasts (gives the leaves green pigment, used in photosynthesis). But did you also know that according to the endosymbiosis hypothesis, the mitochondria & chloroplast were once free-living cells. They were “swallowed” into other larger cells and became a subcomponent. Evidence for this includes the fact that both these structures have their own DNA and can self-replicate.
Mitochondria is the prisoner of the cell

This Tuesday, The Satanic Temple will be arguing their case in front of the Missouri Supreme Court after convincing an appeals court that the state’s mandatory 72-hour waiting period before having an abortion violates their religious freedom.
The Temple is taking up the case of a member they refer to as “Mary Doe,” who claims the law goes against her religious beliefs. The woman contends that back in May of 2015, she was forced to view an ultrasound of her fetus and required to read a booklet that stated life “begins at conception.”
All of this was forced upon her despite the fact that she “adheres to principles of the Satanic temple and has sincerely held religious beliefs different from the information in the informed consent booklet,” according to her case summary.
“Specifically, her letter advised she has deeply held religious beliefs that a nonviable fetus is not a separate human being but is part of her body and that abortion of a nonviable fetus does not terminate the life of a separate, unique, living human being,” the case summary stated according to NBC News.
The Satanic Temple’s Jex Blackmore says Mary Doe’s religious freedom is being trampled upon.
“The State has essentially established a religious indoctrination program intended to push a single ideological viewpoint,” Blackmore said in a statement. “The law is intended to punish women who disagree with this opinion.”
“Missouri’s state-mandated informed consent booklets explicitly say that life begins at conception, which is a nonmedical religious viewpoint that many people disagree with,” his statement continued. “Forcing women to read this information and then wait 72-hours to consider the State’s opinion is a clear violation of the Establishment Clause.”
Although the state disagreed with the Temple’s assessment, a Missouri appeals court found merit in the Temple’s argument and agreed to let the case go the Missouri Supreme Court and even commented on the urgency of the case’s constitutional implications.
*starts handing out bags of popcorn* Oooooh, this gonna eat up the pro-lifers…
Satanists hold the line
There was an update:
Update, 1/25/18: A local CBS affiliate is reporting that the Temple has prevailed in its showdown with the state of Missouri over its abortion restrictions.
According to 9News, Missouri’s Solicitor General D. John Sauer declared ultrasounds are not required to obtain an abortion in the state.

Guys, the Satanists won.

There is no actual, tangible reason why we allow people to starve, to be homeless, to suffer and die needlessly. Food is plentiful. Empty homes are plentiful. Medicine is plentiful. It’s hidden away behind constructs and we pretend those constructs mean something. There is an empty home and a homeless family, give them it. There is a sick child and common medicine to treat it, give it to them. There is a starving person and so much food wasted by corporations or hidden behind a dollar sign, feed them.
I’m a big fan of that post-laundry feeling when you’ve got all your A-list clothes back in the game.
A graduate student has created the first man-made biological leaf. It absorbs water and carbon dioxide to produce oxygen just like a plant. He did this by suspending chloroplasts in a mixture made out of silk protein. He believed it can be used for many things but the most striking one is the thought that it could be used for long distance space travel. Plants do not grow in space, but this synthetic material can be used to produce oxygen in a hostile environment. (Video)
If you don’t think this is cool, you are very wrong.
Be proud of who you are, and not ashamed of how someone else sees you.

Best church sign of the week.
Amen and amen.
ellen degeneres is turning 60 years old this week and i’m not sure how to process that information like…. i never knew how old she was and i never really thought about that fact that she has an age…. i feel like she just exists on this planet as an ageless entity
i hate when you’re not in the same mood as your friend like when you want to slay your enemies and feast on their flesh and your friend wants to dance in a field of daisies and sing for the sake of singing like no stop that grab a pitchfork

Bonnie would like to say that she was happy. And in many ways, she was. She had a stable job, an apartment, and a good man that loved her. But it wasn’t until that same man bent down on one knee and asked her to marry him that she second-guessed all of it.
Six years ago, she left Mystic Falls and never looked back. She traveled and healed and decided her life would be different; it would be better. And she’d accomplished a lot of what she set out to do. She finished school, she built up a career, she settled down and rooted her self to a place she wanted to call home. But there were parts that she missed– people that she’d loved and lost, who left scars and wounds and open spaces they used to occupy. She’d grieved for Enzo and she chose to live the life he would have wanted for her. She still missed him sometimes, but she had grown from the experience. Learned what she wanted and what she deserved. Which was where Brendan came in.
He was a good person. Smart and funny and loving. He was warm and safe and the kind of guy a normal woman would want in her life long term. Up until this moment, she thought she did, too. But Bonnie wasn’t normal. She was complicated. She had a history she could never share with him. To Brendan, she was a smart, strong woman that was building a new life after the loss of her family. That wasn’t untrue, it just wasn’t everything. There was so much more that she just couldn’t tell him. She wasn’t even sure where she would start. That she was a witch. That she’d fought and killed and defended her hometown against any number of enemies. That her best friends were vampires. It was all just too much and, frankly, he hadn’t signed up for any of it. In his mind, she was normal. Human. And maybe she’d done a good job of convincing him, and herself, that she was. Until now.
Bonnie stared at the ring he was holding and panic clogged her throat. Normal people were excited by something like this. By the idea of a forever spent with a good person that loved them. And maybe she would be, if the love she felt for him was as strong as it should be.
Six days ago, she got a letter.
She wondered if her answer would be different if it was seven days earlier. Or if the letter never came at all. But the letter had come, and she’d read it.
In fact, she’d read it every day since she got it…

Good people aren’t wealthy.
Let me make this clear here. It’s actually impossible to hoard millions in personal fortune and also live an ethical life.
Some people are taking this as a personal attack against their families, who make something in the six figure range. This post is not about you. In full scale, families like that are not what I’d consider to be “wealthy”.
I’m talking about the multi-millionaire/billionaire CEOs, politicians, and media moguls. This isn’t about your uncle who’s a surgeon and saves people’s lives. Please don’t misinterpret that. They’re not nearly on the same scale of “wealthy”.
But if your uncle is the head of a multinational corporation that utilizes cheap overseas labour and exploits third world countries, fuck that guy actually.
There are a small handful of people, fewer than 10, who own as much wealth as half the world’s human population of over 7 billion.
With no exaggeration, these few people could give away almost all of their money, sell off almost everything else and give that away, and instantly double the quality of living of over 3.5 billion people, AND still be more wealthy than any of those 3.5 billion people, AND still be more wealthy than almost anyone else on Earth, AND still have all of the intangible wealth, social connections, and reputation that would allow them to quickly, if not instantly, acquire any amount of money they could ever need. If they didn’t feel like giving it away, they could still hire half the people on Earth to work full time to do whatever job they had in mind, profit off their labor, and still pay a better wage than they’re making now, which would make them more likely to live longer and want to maintain a better lifestyle, and thus buy more things, enriching the wealthy even more.
Wealthy people are so wealthy, they literally hold the fate of anyone and everyone else in their hands, but are too self-centered or unconcerned with the reality of ordinary people to actually put the power of that wealth to good use.
deep, rooted fear
Aries: powerlessness, losing a sense of their own self, never achieving their goal, losing their flame, being seen/described as incapable and being underestimated, life being dull, plain and grey - and they are a part of it
Taurus: losing what is most important to them (materialistic/security/loved ones), never being able to expand themselves and being stuck on something they don’t want/think they don’t deserve, not reaching a higher level and worries A LOT about the future and how it might look like
Gemini: being ‘caged’ in their own mind, being seen as stupid or of unsound mind, having no real connection to anything and anyone, being scattered and all over the place (internal), being judged for their words/intellect
Cancer: the future, never forgetting past trauma/overcoming sadness, not being able to let go, being used, showing their soft side, showing their real selves and coming out of their shell, having no home
Leo: being exposed to every flaw and insecurety they have, never being able to shine and show their true self, being lost, having no energy/optimism to go on, trusting the wrong ones too easily, not having the life they always wanted/admired
Virgo: being a failure to themselves and anyone else, losing control over their life, not being able to go on anymore, paranoia of everything that could go wrong, exposing themselves too early/easily
Libra: never finding the one, feeling no fulfillment deep within, feeling like a ghost/having no real face, not being satisfied themselves, giving too much, being hurt/forgotten, being completely alone
Scorpio: being hurt/exposed, letting the wrong ones in, (past) trauma, never healing scars, love (loving oneself and being loved), opening up, becoming the demon and the demons of the world/life, losing
Sagittarius: being trapped and caged, never being able to feel life, being exposed to their feelings and showing their caring/loving side, never being able to win (due to running away from their problems), never being truly content
Capricorn: being stuck on lower grounds, always losing, never winning, their hard built up reputation being shattered, losing what’s most important for them, inner conflicts and hidden emotions - not being able to express them and compensate for it,
Aquarius: being the madman and not the genius they wish to be, being lost in the world, an inner standstill, having no one by their side, being alone, being judged for what they are inside, not knowing the answer/being completely hopeless
Pisces: never being able to truly love/be loved, being lost in their own mind/trauma, afraid of being hurt and used, an inner trance that they can not escape, a martyrer that is shamelessly sacrificed and will never be recognized, no understanding for their view/opinions
Ryan Reynolds is officially my favorite person
Not to sound like a millennial freak or anything but working everyday and slaving away for an organization or company or person who doesn’t care about you no matter how “good” the pay or benefits or atmosphere is is not the way human beings were meant to live. Destroying ourselves from the outside in and otherwise is neither living nor surviving and it’s so disgusting we’ve been pushed into believe that it’s just the way life is. None of us ever have truly experienced what life is lol
