trying to explain why i love being aroace is like if love is the light spectrum romantic and sexual attraction are visible light and then every other possible kind of love is outside of the visible spectrum and it’s like. just wait till you guys find out about radio waves they’re actually really important in a lot of modern technology. same with x-rays and infrared. and if you guys knew where and how to look you’d actually see there’s way more light around you than you actually thought there was. you’ve trapped yourself in a fake box of what light is based on what you can see but if you try a little harder to look there’s so much more out there. visible light isn’t special just because it’s what you happen to be able to see, stars are made of all of it, every wavelength, visible light is just a fraction of their radiance. if you didn’t bother with visible light so much you’d be able to appreciate what light truly is so much better. just saying.

i think the core of why aroace grace is so important to me is because so many aroace people are deemed “less than human” for lacking something categorized as “inherently human,” or ostracized for straying from the expectations of an amatonormative society. but grace basically goes fuck (well, fudge) all of that my best friend is an alien and i’m going to live out a beautiful and fulfilling life in a terrarium on his alien planet and eat cannibalism burgers for the rest of my life and it’s going to be so completely worth it because i don’t need a partner or a dog to make my life meaningful and i don’t have to adhere to anyone’s expectations anymore. i think part of why his relationship with rocky is so special to him is that it’s his first taste of how it really feels to be put first, to be truly valued without any expectations of romance, or anything for that matter. yes he loved earth, yes he had meaningful relationships with his students and friends, but on erid with rocky was the first time the constant pressure of an alloromantic society was totally gone. and he proves that you can live a completely bizarre life that most people would be utterly baffled by and be perfectly happy. you can never get married and your kids can be pebbles and your roommates can be robots and literally no one can do anything about it.

There’s a dissonance I remember from my audiobook listen in Grace’s flashbacks between the tone of how his life is described versus his own assertion of his happiness (which because we’re in his head, as far as we can tell is completely true). He lives alone in a small cheap apartment and eats half frozen microwave spaghetti for dinner. The tone of the writing and the choice to highlight these details says “this is a sad life”. And yet time and again Grace asserts and shows that he was genuinely happy here. He loved being a teacher, he sucked at cooking and so was a regular at the local diner instead, etc.

Obviously the Doylist reason for this is that Andy Weir did not intend for aroace Grace and he presumably holds these biases himself. But in universe, the implication is that the word choices represent Grace’s thoughts and feelings. The judgement can be seen as him internalizing amatonormativity from society.

And then when he gets to Erid, he lives basically the EXACT SAME LIFE. He lives alone, he eats the same thing every day (and loves it apparently), he adores his job. But now the tone is different. And I completely agree. The difference (in this reading) is that he’s removed from amatonormative society and now he can just exist happily without judgement.
