going over to my minimalist girlfriend’s house and she apologizes profusely for the mess and there’s just a single perfect, fresh pea on the floor of her living room

World Heritage Post
i deserve a medal for this post. not because i was particularly funny but because i survived an onslaught of nearly one hundred gimmick blogs in the wake of this post popping off, and the fact that i didn’t try to track any of them down and snuff them out with my bare hands is a testament to my immeasurable strength and should be rewarded. at one point i had “the official letter h” add on to this post. you wanna know that blog’s gimmick? the really funny and original and worthwhile gimmick the official letter h blog had? yep you guessed it they just gave me the god damned letter H and then fucked off. only jesus knows the suffering i endured over that harsh winter, and he wept for me
The evolutionary implications of the KOTLC Universe plague me daily. Every single species is kept alive by the elves, does that mean that there's Homo Hidelbergensis' just chilling around with the Flores Men? Did the hominid species continue evolving? Do Australopithicus have complex family societies and language? Where do they keep them? Do they have them in their own areas, do they still live in bands and tribes and small family units? Or did they also create their own civilizations? Or are they kept in enclosures like other animals, at what point does it separate animals from intelligent species? How did the Elves come about in the first place? They managed to get ahold of dinosaurs and shit so was there an earlier evolution? Catastrophic event then a rebuild? There's so many possibilities!
See this is why I really questioned this when it was mentioned in the books. I'm an absolute nerd when it comes to biology, and I genuinely couldn't wrap my head around how this was scientifically possible.
It's an interesting concept, and makes sense when you align it with the elves' beliefs, but there's also no stopping the march of evolution. Also you can't "train" hypercarnivores to be vegetarian...
Personally, I think it'd make more sense if they used the big sanctuary in the Himalayas (been a while since I've actually read the books, so I can't remember what they called it) and, like... split it up into eras? I guess?? And they grouped all the creatures designed and evolved to coexist together and basically recreated those environments on a smaller scale, then left the creatures to their own devices. Maybe they'd check on them occasionally to make sure everything's in balance and no one's gone extinct, but other than that, it's just nature being nature.
Did they already do this? I remember them being all smushed together in one big sanctuary with no real separation between species. Correct me if I'm wrong! :3
I think the evolution of elves is also a really good point. The only time I've ever seen someone tackle that concept in fiction is Elfquest. The elves were basically shapeshifting aliens who evolved on a completely different planet. When their fancy castle-spaceship crash-landed on something resembling Earth, they split into four different subspecies, all adapted to endure individual environments. The process was really rapid, too, taking only eleven generations of the shortest-living subspecies to complete.
Not saying KOTLC elves are aliens, but I just couldn't resist yapping about one of my favorite elf stories for a second. Back to KOTLC elves though-
I think they used to be taller, lankier, more like your classic RPG-style elf. But then they started having relations with humans, and my theory is that there were some inter-species relationships. That's why we have talentless elves, and why they look like humans but prettier, and why they only get pointy ears when they're super old (human ears get pointier as they age, so if you have an elf who's literally ancient, of course they're going to have pointy ears).
Idk, sorry for yapping, I've just been thinking about this for a while, lol. Have a nice time zone! :D
THANK YOU i think the sanctuary is cool as a concept but it is not possible. you cannot stop evolution. and also you cannot train obligate carnivores to be vegetarian. and it pisses me off. like shannon please at least try to make it accurate???
THANK GOODNESS SOMEONE ELSE AGREES-
You both are so on the money! It drives me crazy because like. Things exist for a reason and there are circumstances which make everything how it is and just removing all circumstance entirely is so sanitized??? It just turns this miracle of the earth into something so boring. Plus the vegetarian thing is absolutely wild because like. How do they stop over population? Do they just not allow them to mate at all? Are the animals even really still non-endangered if you've removed everything which makes them what they are?

I do tend to be suspicious of art that really lauds and worships the idea of being an artist. Like yes, art is cool, I think it's valuable, there's a reason I make it. But let's not get overly self congratulatory here
I think it's okay to love what you do, and even celebrate that. But there's a line that gets crossed sometimes where the art goes... "unlike all of those stupid people, who just dont get it." And it's like... hey... who are you making this for, exactly?
reminds me of that "artists fuck better because we turn sex into art, mattresses are our canvas" post or however that goes. always makes me laugh
also relevant
Where is that post that's like "art is a natural human behavior just like birds make nests and spiders spin webs, and focusing on being 'good at it' is missing the point"
i love explaining the etymology of the word "rickroll" because the story starts with "ok, so at one point 4chan applied a filter to everyone's posts that changed the word egg to duck"
