I’ve been asked how long it took to draw Ciel’s birthday illustration yesterday. Since it had the size of a postcard (350dpi), it took me about 4 hours, from deciding on the pose until the finish. I’m not that fast [at drawing illustrations], sorry if I disappointed you…
I lay down on the floor and took photos of myself in order to check the pose for the drawing. (lol) I don’t ever want to remember how [weird] I looked while lying on the cold floor taking photos of myself.
If it were an official illustration, it would take a lot more time (even if it were the same size) since it needs to be checked by respective institutions!
Anyway, whenever Ciel’s birthday is near people ask me about the birthdays of the other characters. However, except for the anime original character Alois, whose birthday was decided by Ms Okada [*screenwriter of season1+2], I haven’t really made up my mind about the birthdays of most of the manga characters. Oh, come to think of it, Joker’s birthday was mentioned [in the manga]…
I was once asked “You’ve already decided on Lizzy’s birthday, haven’t you?,” but I think I haven’t mentioned it in the manga yet. Unless it’s indicated either in the manga or in the character book, please regard the birthdays of the characters as ‘uncertain’. It’s true that Lizzy’s birthday is mentioned in the wiki article but it had no source, so please leave her birthday as uncertain in the manga. I think Sebastian’s birthday could be the day he made the contract with Ciel but the exact date of this incident hasn’t been mentioned in the manga yet, so his birthday is uncertain for now as well. (lol)
If you start thinking about birthdays, you need to think about their meaning, take characters’ respective images into consideration and so on, and I would need a lot of time. That’s one of the reasons why I haven’t decided on the birthdays yet. In addition to this, considering the era, there’s the possibility that the characters themselves don’t know on which day they were born. Just like Joker, probably. You would only know [your birthday] when a grim reaper reads it aloud.
I actually don’t mind deciding on the characters’ birthdays someday. It seems like you guys are so interested in knowing them! My favourite characters always used to be supernatural creatures, even before I became a professional manga artist. So I actually never really cared about a character’s birthday…! If there’s an opportunity to announce them officially, I’ll decide on the birthdays of all the characters. But like I said, if there’s ever an opportunity. :)
