Long Story Short

Ok Long Story Short (one of my favorites) has the lyric “past me, I want to tell you not to get lost in these petty things, your nemeses will defeat themselves before you get the chance to swing”

The whole song is about her relationship with Joe standing the test of 2017, Rep era, and her fighting for peace in her relationships against the media...

So she’s saying “past me” as in, earlier version of Taylor, I wish I could tell you not to get as upset, it’ll all work out, better things are coming.

I (dumb) always thought she was saying “past me” to Joe, as in, after me,  if/when their relationship ends, she knows his life and reputation will change after being shot to stardom for dating Taylor. In some ways, she’s apologetic and angry, like in I Know Places. But mainly, as this song is about more positive things, she wants him to not go through the heartache that she did during 2017. She wants him to learn from her mistakes and not get as upset with how the media talks about him, her, and their relationship. 

Obviously my initial understanding was incorrect, but it changed the meaning of the song a bit for me, and I love how her lyrics are so specific but so ambiguous that there are ten meanings to everything she says, whether she planned for it or not.

Part of the extravaganza that was reputation was how sudden it was, the context, the grandeur, and that it was such a departure from her usual ‘vibe,’ a blip in a pop princess’ world of sparkles and dreams. Now she’s even further from that venturing into acoustic indie music, and we can likely continue to expect changes in her style and genre. But it’s bittersweet that we will never have another ‘reputation’ era, and if we did, it wouldn’t be the same. Part of the charm is that it only happened once
