While Se did find mangled remains of the shadowy tendrils the thief commanded, they fizzled out as soon as he inched closer. Se rubbed his face in annoyance. There’s nothing he could hope to bring with him to examine.
…which in a way is just fine, he supposes. It doesn’t seem wise to involve himself much with the man, now that he thinks about it. He turned away from the alley then, to mingle with the still crowded streets and find a place to spend the night.
“It’s all very nice of you, ma'am. Thank you.” The boy smiled, a trifle shyly, at the lady behind the fruit stall as she added–as a bonus–a pear to his purchases. Se expressed thanks once more before ducking out of her stall.
Looks like it will be a fine night, he thought as he picked out the stars dotting the clear sky peeking from the tattered tarps serving as the market’s cover. I guess I can go see my father now.
“…or not,” he finished his thought in a disappointed mumble. Straight ahead, he could see him: a guy in dark clothing, a mop of tousled hair on his head and a grin that says he owns the world. He never got a good look on the man from last night, but his eyes–his eyes are the ones Se recognizes best. “Damn, this bastard.”
The frail frame and skunk hair were unmistakable, but Asher easily kept the shock of stumbling into Se from his face. Instead, his smile somehow grew impossibly more smug. A large woman bumped into him as he stood in the flow of the crowd, and in that brief moment he snatched an apple from her bag. He noted a tightening in Se’s brow. Even minor crimes bother the fool, he mused.
“Hello again, buttercup. I knew you couldn’t resist me after last night,” he took a bite of the crisp fruit, then offered it to Se. Asher moved forward still holding the apple out. “Have a taste.”
Weapons, and general fighting, have been banned from the main market since the merchants guild bought out the town. Only guards and the wealthy were allowed to wear them, but perhaps the idiot before him was fresh from the boats. If he could be goaded into attacking first then most of the work to get the rings will be done for Asher. All he would need to do is take them from the guards’ room in the jailhouse.
