Read Debord.
Vox actually did a pretty nice article about it, and in case you were wondering what charities it is supposed to be benefiting

Ben and Jerryās isnāt making an empty advertising gesture. They company has supported Bernie Sanders, and made an ice cream flavor to raise awareness of global warming. They run progressive news stories on their websites and social media. They pay their workers a living wage. Even their brownies are sourced from a company that specializes in hiring people out of jail to help them get their lives back on track. Theyāre open supporters of socialism. I understand the idea of āno ethical consumptionā but Ben and Jerryās isnāt just adopting a political message for nothing.
Look itās good to call out when companies are being fake woke. But itās also doubly important to encourage companies when they make a genuine effort.

people I still want to stab over a decade later:
Creative Writing Professor at a former college: Welcome to creative writing! By the way, you will not write fantasy, ghost stories, pranormal, or science fiction in this class, as this is a creative writing course.ā
What the ever loving fuck is withĀ ācreativeā writing professors who think that speculative fiction of any stripe ISNāT CREATIVE?
I still remember my own creative writing teacher telling me this because he saw the Terry Pratchett book on my desk and got this smug smirk on his face like āaha, gotchaā. He had the nerve to pick it up and call it āpopularist fictionā, like somehow being popular and easily accessible made it less inherent in intellectual value.
I had it in my back pack because I did my final thesis on the evolution of mythology and folk tails into fantasy and sci-fi and the societal importance of telling stories (before anyone asks, no I donāt have it, I lost it when I moved continents), and I used Terry Pratchett because there wasnāt a single humanitarian issue the man did not touch on.
Which I told him. And then he kind of floundered and went āah, well but, itāsā¦well I mean itās not exactly high browā, like neither the fuck was Shakespeare or Dickens you self-important turnip. Dickens was literally selling his stories by the chapter. He was the popular author of his time. Shakespeare was too, he fucking made up words and phrases all the time because the language he needed to express himself didnāt exist in the way he needed it too.
Intellectual elitism is nothing more than a hold over from class warfare and the belief that only certain people should get to be truly educated. And it needs to be smashed.
neither the fuck was Shakespeare or Dickens you self-important turnip

Hereās the whole video. Itās calledĀ āDonāt Be A Suckerā and itās 17 minutes long.
donāt just scroll past this actually watch it, itās only 2 minutes long. If you re-recorded this today word for word with modern actors and places, it wouldnāt even look out of place as a PSA

Today I learned that Van Halen have that rider in their contract aboutĀ āa bowl of M&Ms with all the brown ones removedā in order to know at a glance if the promoter read the entire contract.Ā And the reason they do THAT is because they once had a stage collapse because a promoter hadnāt read the proper way to set up all the specific technical stuff.
So if the band goes in the dressing room or catering and sees brown M&Ms, they know they have to double-check the stage setup for safety.
now thatās rock n roll
this is cute as HELL

as a general rule. if what weāre calling ācultural appropriationā sounds like nazi ideology (i.e. āwhite people should only do white people things and black people should only do black people thingsā) with progressive language, we are performing a very very poor application of what ācultural appropriationā means. this is troublingly popular in the blogosphere right now and i think we all need to be more critical of what it is we may be saying or implying, even unintentionally.
There is nothing wrong with everyone enjoying each otherās cultures so long as those cultures have been shared.Ā
Eating Chinese food, watching Bollywood movies, going to see Cambodian dancers, or learning to speak Korean so you can watch every K drama in existence is totally fine. The invitation to participate in those things came from within those cultures.Ā The Mexican family that owns the place where I get fajitas wants me to eat fajitas. Their whole business model kind of depends on it, actually.Ā
If you see something from another culture you think you might want to participate in, but you donāt know if that would be disrespectful or appropriative, you can justā¦ask. Like. A Jewish friend explained what a mezuzah was to me, recently. (Itās the little scroll-thing near their front doors that they touch when they come into their house. It basically means āthis is a Jewish household.ā)
āOh, cool,ā I said.Ā āCan I touch it? Or is it only for Jewish people?ā
āYou can touch it or you can not touch it,ā she said.Ā āI donāt care.ā
āCool, Iām gonna touch it, then.ā
āCool.ā
Itās not hard.
You want to twerk, twerk. Iāve never heard a black person say they didnāt think anybody else should be allowed to twerk. Just that they want us to acknowledge that they invented that shit, not Miley fucking Cyrus.
this is a good post.
Thank you, I was trying to sort this out in my head but you explained it very well.
#free exchange of culture is great - taking that culture without invite and pretending yours is an original take#(worse still profiting off it)#is cultural appropriationĀ (by @gnimaerd)
