The Holocaust, specifically Auschwitz. I’m thinking that even the shiniest coat of pain cannot cover the hurt I still feel, and what is still inflicted.
Goddess... You were actually in that place? Shit... The only time I saw it was when my squad met up with the reds who had stormed the place. Most of the buildings were burned out or blown up, but there was this aura about the place... I was sick for days after setting foot in there, but it made me especially proud of the notches in my Lee No.4.

Well, it's not like I kill things for sport, that's just evil! I only take what I need, and what I can use. I need food, but I can't use more than a rabbit or a squirrel for now... Look, I get all that respect for nature stuff, and I do respect nature myself, but even animals eat other animals. Hunters can be the most in tune with the earth if they try, that's what the Iroquois taught me.
That you have! It's impressive, not many people can handle a complete change of environment so easily. Unless, of course, they had a good reason to leave the place they were before...

I’ve spent two years out of the clans, speaking little of our language since then. Practice? I need my head checked, according to 99% of all clan leaders.
Not exactly. Just checking on some snares I set earlier. I can't hunt anything too big yet, not without a place to store the meat and clean the fur. I can deal with a rabbit or something small easily enough, though.

-doesn’t acknowledge him arriving- Had you been here earlier, you would have heard me starting to calm him with Quenya and getting nowhere. He can understand me when I speak Quenya, yes, but he hears English far more often than Quenya.
Aside from that, my Quenya is quite choppy, and speaking full phrases can be rough on others.
Had I been here earlier, I wouldn't have eaten today. I'm sure you've done fantastically, don't think I'm criticising! I just found it a bit odd to hear one of The People speaking English when there are other options.

I’ve spent far too much time with our kind in recent years. The change has been quite refreshing. You’re different than the ones I’ve been with, though…
I do! I live on the outskirts of Polt. It really depends on where you live, but the general area is fantastic, sans fire. Although the Pit is wrought with Demons, so I don’t know if you’ll want to go there. I avoid it, though.
Well, it helps when you live most of your first century without even knowing you're an elf. I've only ever spent a few decades with an elven clan, I don't think I'm exactly your typical specimen. Is the different good, or bad?
I can handle demons, once you learn the right tricks they bleed just as easily as anything else. Thanks for the warning, though. I've been thinking about staying here awhile. A few months, maybe a year or two...

Julian walks up slowly behind Shane, and watches the progress of the fire with him. "I'd forgotten that humans lose their homes to fires too, not just animals. Don't worry. What was built once can be built again, if need be." he claps Shane lightly on the back.
