It's a Hard Knock Life

anyway while I'm on the topic of NatM-
I know a lot of fictional characters get Silly-Little-Guy-ified by their fandoms and then when you rewatch the actual media they're a lot more serious. I was fully expecting that from Jedediah and Octavius since I see a lot of fanart of them. I was wrong. They really are just Like That in the movies. Jed says that being picked up "makes me feel small and powerless" with complete sincerity and self-awareness, right after attempting to run over Larry's head with a train. Octy goes from sassy little contrarian bitch to the scolded-child face and "yes, my liege" in less than thirty seconds, and occasionally waxes gay poetic about Lancelot's eyes (much to Jed's jealousy). They both like cat videos and ride around in a remote control car. They fully believe they're gonna die- complete with the whole emotional "this is the end of the line" routine- on like four separate occasions. Truly the Silly Little Guy characters of all time.
The Justice Society of America versus Galactus by John Byrne.
We as a society should get more “treating Willis like the human he is” instead of “Willis is a neglectful vermin of a man that should’ve died because he’s a criminal and also Bruce Wayne is a 100% a better parent” type of vibe yk. I’ve been reading some pre-Bruce Jason and I’ve just like,, fallen in love with Willis’s premise his character like sure he’s barely there but when he’s there? God it does something to me.
There’s something so insidious (like so extra insidious outside of the dc fandom norm of “so incredibly classist we could go toe to toe with a French elite before the revolution”) and so dehumanising about taking a story of a man’s desperation to give his son a better life then turning it into a story of a man who’s abusive and evil because of the crimes he committed in that desperation. God. And then ontop of that comparing it to Jason under Bruce’s care as if as if there’s any stable footing for any kind of meaningful comparison “Jason had a better life under Bruce” yeah and Bruce has about at least 7 more zeros in his bank account your point?? Like if we assumed both wanted a better life for Jason, like no fucking shit the one with near infinite amount of resources would provide a better life than a man who has essentially nothing- then taking the fact that he has nothing then equating that to he’s abusive and a bad father is just like. Wow. Are we reciting the classist manifesto???
And yeah in some in my eyes extremely classist iterations of the story (because I haven’t delved into classism of dc editorial themselves yet) Willis is an objectively bad father, but here’s the difference Bruce is consistently a bad father- no no no we aren’t gonna start with that whole “he’s trying his best!” He is an objectively selfish father. Doesn’t matter what his genuine intent is if he really loved them or not, his actions especially with Jason is unequivocally selfish. At least it reads as incredibly selfish to me, covering up your own son’s murder to continue your vigilante hobby- letting the man who murdered your son go off Scott fucking free basically again inaction is endorsement- to go off and kill and ruin more families for your own moral code- and don’t start with the “oh of course the Jason fan doesn’t understand the moral code” I DO and that’s why I said selfish- I said selfish not amoral not immoral selfish. Because that’s what Bruce Wayne is. He is a deeply flawed man, a deeply flawed father and pretending he isn’t in comparison to Willis is classist. I highly doubt most iterations of Willis would purposely cover up and hide the death of his own son for his own personal vendettas I highly doubt of Willis was in the position he would let a man who’s done so much evil go because of his own aversion to death.
A lot of yall claim Bruce Wayne isn’t affected by his wealth but like,,,, yall do know having a moral code is a luxury? Like he has the resources to throw at problems till they go away to make himself more comfortable, Willis doesn’t have that- Willis will never have that. Bruce Wayne is a billionaire like any other and hoarding his wealth to “improve” the health of Gotham (caused by that same hoarding of wealth) doesn’t make him an acceptable billionaire.
i think kirk deserves a lot more credit for keeping a cool head based on some of the nonsense he had to deal with throughout the original
like fuckkkk i sent my men on a routine mission to an uninhabited planet and the fucking wizard got them. yeah he lives in a haunted castle and his shapeshifting cat friend brainwashed them into doing her bidding. yeah i fucked the cat lady to figure out the source of their power and then when i destroyed it they turned out to be some sort of blue chicken maybe???? god damnit dude i better not get sent into another evil dimension or the past or some other bullshit again when i get back
I Look Like Hell (Just to Wear it Well) ch 5 fanart
Fanart of I Look Like Hell (Just to Wear it Well) by Riv_Styx on AO3. Love love love this chapter and I spend every day hoping for a resolution for how our boys make it out of this one!
I did have to make a few slight changes to dialogue and such to fit the format, but hopefully I maintained the spirit of the work!

Jedediah
I would actually go as far as to say that MOST abuse is unintentional. I think most people will go through their lives without ever experiencing intentional abuse. People are abusive because they're selfish, because they're stressed, because they care more about what society thinks they should do than the impacts of their actions on their children and partners, because they think what they're doing is correct, because they've made it make sense in their own heads, because they think they can fix their victims, they think they can fix their relationships, they think they can stop you from leaving, they think they can make you a better partner to them, they think that means you need to do what they want. We've sort of constructed mental illness in a way that doing this shit to other people counts as a form of mental illness because it is anti social behavior in the literal sense— it is behavior that causes social harm.
I don't say any of this to excuse it. I think everyone needs to be more aware of this because if you think abuse has to be intentional you will never realize you are capable of abusive behavior. You will never realize you are being shitty to the people you love, because YOU know what you mean, YOU know you don't mean any harm. But you're doing harm. You need to pay attention to the impact you have on other people, and you need to do it all the time, Especially when you feel least capable of doing so. Sorry! You live in a society. Get your head out of your ass.
Supergirl 2026
Just got out of the Supergirl movie and it's honestly a good time! Not amazing; not nearly as good as Superman, but if you show up ready for a nice little movie, that's what you'll get. Supergirl's actress is great, the general direction they take the character in is fun, and it's definitely worth a watch through. I'm glad I saw it and I'd be willing to watch it again. Not as good as its source material, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, so I'd recommend that more, but this is a nice little movie that's getting way too much hate.
A Cowboy and his Roman
I Look Like Hell (Just to Wear it Well) Fanart (ch 1)
Fanart based on I Look Like Hell (Just to Wear it Well) by Riv_Styx on Ao3. Synopsis: the Western diarama has, unknown to Jed, captured the leader of their longtime rivals, the Romans. Out for blood, they encourage Jed to shoot him in cold blood, which he refuses. Another cowboy attempts to shoot Octavius anyway, foiled by his guns not firing. Jed demands Octavius's return and retires to his tent, appalled by the bloodthirsty nature of the crowd.
Argument
like to think that when they get really mad they yell at each other in Spanish and Latin respectively, and neither understands a word of what the other is saying. They'll be ready to talk once they've let off some steam!
jedtavius is peak because at first glance it looks like your ordinary dumbass x smartass trope but then. you get to know them and actually octavius is equally as fucking stupid as jedidiah, just in a different flavour.
What if...Larry was small and Jed big (hehehe) >:3
"and whos 'tiny' now, partner?"
